A sad way to go. Sitting on the bench with a stuffed ankle.

Almost a pity the Hawks still felt they had a chance until the last few minutes. Would have been nice for Schwab to be able to put Fish back on for the last 5 or so minutes. Even with the injury he could have gone to Full Forward where it all started for the last few minutes.

Then the fans could have said farewell properly.

I am sure we will see more of him on the telly though. Media beckons I think.

While no doubt not the way he would have wanted to leave the game. I cant say that it was a 'sad' occasion. He played his 100th game for the Hawks, got a standing ovation from all fans (thanks Roos fans, nice to see and appreaciated) at the ground.

He has had more farewells than Melba now that the end has finally arrived (for real) he went out with dignity and poise. Thanks Paul, this Hawk really did want you and was grateful for the time and efforts you made on behalf of the Hawks.

Great career, well played.

Pity that all the pathetic Hawthorn Supporters can't be unbiassed and applaud a true champion, especially when he is obviously injured yet still playing to best of his capabilities. Sorry to generalise, but that is how I saw it.

Congradulations to an absolute champion! It was a very sad way for him to end his career, but I was thrilled for the Fish to play his 100th Game with the Hawks and to be carried off the ground (thats a big task in itself!)

The hawks fans stayed till the end. We applauded our team as well as Fish. They could easily have won. But they didn't

True suppoert like that means Hawthorn will be around for a long time yet. It's up to North to prove they can do it too.

Sorry , Kangaroos not North

Pess,

I also applauded fish, N9 Southern Stand.

What I am talking about is the bad sportsmanship of Hawthorn Supporters on mass, in booing Carey, If any current Hawthorn player, was that injured, they would not make it onto the park. Even Dermie said it would be poor if Hawthorn supporters booed Carey, only time I have ever agreed with him.

Rooboy, grow up.

Coming from Dermie re booing. Just go back anytime you want from the 82 semi onwards and i can show you booing at a player too! He was big blond and wore 23, played the game pretty well too.

Dont think ALL champions from Carey through to Hird dont cop it. Its why there champs, we love to hate them. Tell me you were a model of compsure when the Dons steamrolled you the other week? Applauded them for great play? Or gave Hird a spray everytime he went near it?

Grendel, well said. Paul played with great courage and dignity throughout his career. I've been absolutely rapt for him to see how well he's played since leaving the dons - I never wanted him to leave. A true legend of the game. Farewell and enjoy your retirement, If anyone's earned it, he has.

All the Hawks supporters were great on Friday night. I know everyone around me stayed for about half and hour after the game singing the song and stuff and that was just heaps good, unlike all the North supporters (cheersquad included) left straight after the game and couldn't even stay around to send off a true champ.
Go the Hawks, we'll be kicking butt in 2001.

Yep gun player forced to play outta position most of his career cos he was marginally worse than one of the best 4 ruckmen this century (ie: Simon Madden - other 3: Big Nick, PF & GD).

On the other hand he was the most unstoppable FF I have ever seen for 10 weeks in 1984... even harder to match up on that Plugger in that period.

Sensational effort for the hawkers - ironic given how much he used to carve you guys up... deserved to be Captain of Essendon IMHO.

Great bloke. Should run for a seat in Parliament - would romp it in.

I stayed and cheered him off, wasn't sure I should after all the crap that Hawthorn Supporters handed out to an injuried King, (another champion of the game) being booed before he touched the ball.
I am far more respectful of the opposition then any of your Hawthorn Supporters.
