Farewell John McCarthy

Harsh. Not a dissimilar situation to Heath Scotland in 2003. OK player who couldn't consolidate a place in a list far inferior to this one. Done alright for himself, has Heath.
bit more speed than Heath, but nowhere near the footskills.

I agree Scotland has better foot skills than McCarthy. They're not an exact match as player types but the situation they found themselves in is similar.

My original comment was in response to McCarthy being referred to as a "list clogger". For crying out loud, you have 42 players on the list and they can't all be playing 22 rounds. This notion that you get a constant feed of great young players each year who go on to squeeze out great old players is fanciful. Every club's got a McCarthy or three and they come into their own (usually) when you need to mine your depth. The reason he goes is not because he's clogging the list or eating the cap but because he wants more opportunity and it's a numbers game at the end of the day. Win-win.

I cant even see that. Scotland was a regular in our 22 and a required player when he asked for a trade but couldnt get on with the coach.

McCarthy was happy to stay but got delisted.

The only similarity is that neither of them wanted to go to Port Adelaide.

I read that McCarthy knew that he couldn't get the opportunitites at Collingwood in the midfield so he spoke to his manager about finding a new home.

McCarthy was similar to Stanley in the respect that both probably play their best football as centre square midfielders, and neither are great disposers of the ball by foot. Their courage has not been questioned, though McCarthy probably lacks the strength and build of Stanley. McCarthy deserves an opportunity to show his ability in his preferred role. Good luck to him.

McCarthy got played out of position a bit, but he got a lot of chances. J-Mac was almost an automatic recall whenever he was fit, which wasn't often. He's a cut above VFL but is just an average AFL talent. I wish him all the best and think he will be a good role player at Port, when he can get on the park.

Yeah he didn't get delisted, the club said they wanted him to make up his mind if he wanted to stay or not. He certainly wasn't a required player, but the club would have retained him if he wanted to be.

I doubt thats true. He was gone regardless. You have to cut players every year and McCarthy would have copped the short straw.

IIRC Walsh or Buckley said they were waiting on his decision on what he wanted to do. It also sounded clear that he was only going to be a bit part player on a low contract if he stayed so it was basically saying McCarthy should look for opportunities elsewhere but there was always the option to stay.

A question - the club always lists a player as "retired" or "delisted".

What's the difference?

A few examples:

Leon is listed as "retired". He decided on his own account to leave, and nominated for the PSD (at which he didn't get picked up).

McCarthy is listed as "delisted". He decided on his own account to leave, and nominated for the PSD (at which he did get picked up).

I'm confused!

Maybe there needs to be a third classification: "Player didn't want to play with us anymore".

I'm not sure why Leon got listed as retired unless it's only been changed to that recently after the drafts. Normally if a player leaves with the intention of playing at another club then they've been delisted, whereas a guy like Leigh Brown retired from AFL.

(sorry for editing my post while you posted this)

The term 'delisted' smacks of similar connotations to 'sacked', which is not necessarily true.

It's as if:

'Retired' = left with dignity (a 225 gamer is given some leeway to find opporunities elsewhere, as long as their attempts fail).

'Delisted' = undignified exit.

I wish J-Mac all the best. I think he can forge quite a good career at Port. However, he is a long way off our 22 and I think it was right for both parties to pat ways.

He just doesn't excel in any areas...he is decent at everything. He also lacks the size to have an impact as an in and under.

Hopefully he can build his frame because his only real hope in my opinion is to develop into an in and under clearance winner because he doesn't have the skills to be a dangerous half forward flanker.

I like him though and he has a good attitude and work ethic.
