what about david myers? 190 cm utility who sounds like a Smart pick

Agree 100% but I'm not sure that he would be a SMART pick even though he would have to call out his name. I would be very happy to pick him and have no doubt that he would be a decided acquisition to the list. Mind you there is one other Club (later in the order) who is extremely interested in Mr Myers.

I spoke to Farren after the flogging his doggies received from Geelong.

He has always wanted to come home, his father moved everything to be by his side 2 years ago.

I thought he had overcome his home-sickness. It could have been the dissappointment of the result talking but I got the impression he wanted to head home.

Him wanting to come home and actually getting the trade are separate issues.

Rocket is a smart man.

We need midfielders to complement the guys we already have eg. Hase and J. Carr... We dont need more utilities ie. 190cm half back flankers which we have already...

I think what Pinkus is suggesting is that he is the sort of player that Smart our recruiting manager has wet dreams about. Myers is the equivalent Mundy/Drum type of the 2007 draft and I expect some club in the Top 7 to get excited about him.

I too would be disappointed (but not suprised) if we called out Myers name in front of Palmer or Masten.

Tarkyn Lockyer would have been good on our list.

We have always had players with questionable names. There was the whole Shell, Bell, Shipp collective for a start. How are you with Clayton? Calib? Clive?

Clayton....Tonne of CLay??? steong name.....similar to Brock:thumbsu: me likes....Calib....Very Biblical name....will take us to the promised land...:thumbsu: me likes....Clive.....Clive.......Clive...........has go the word live in it..............but was built like a brick/clay %&#@/water house......so he fits in the whole scheme of things.....and as for Shell, Bell, Shipp.....they're all nautical terms...and we have an anchor as our emblem....works for me. As for Tarkyn....stupid name...can't trust him.....if he decides to come however I will be sure to find something that will make him one of ours and fit in very nicely.

I reckon he's wrong. Dont be miffed by Palmer's form in the WAFL. Clayton Collard was kicking 6 off a wing last year. He went at pick 31.

I think we'll end up with either Palmar/Masten/Ebert/Morton.....

Palmer's form has been superb since the championships. Daniel Wells is the only player I can think of who had better WAFL form pre-draft and he went at pick 2.

ive said before and stand buy my comment that ray is too much of and outside player which we dont need i doint think he has enough pace and lets draft for the future not just to get some home sick kid home he would have known he satnds a bigger chance of going east when he nominated for the draft

Farren Ray????

I'm not sure why he is up for discussion. He is a reasonable footballer, in the games I have seen him in he seems to be very much a receiver, not a ball winner. His disposal is okay and can kick a goal but there are a lot of players around, some of which are already on our list, that I would rate in his class.

Are we talking about Farren Ray just because he happens to be from Perth and may be home sick? If so, I think this shows the small town mentality of a lot of people on here. I don't subscribe to this attitude of bringing back to Perth a guy to play his footy days at Freo just because he is WA born. We want to recruit THE BEST guys we can get. At the moment we need midfielders but as I said he is very much a receiver and probably won't be that great for us. We are not a social service for homesick footballers.

Farren Ray was asked by Rocket at the start of this year to play as a "run-with" player.

This is how the conflict began, Farren thought his efforts against the pies in last years final was worthy of a promotion in the midfield ranks.

Basically, he thought it was a step backward.

What we are not seeing is his ability to win the ball first, then look for his man.

At the moment it is man first, get the ball if you can.

He was pick 4 for a reason and would be a magnificent acquisition should the opportunity present itself.

Name Paul Hasleby ring a bell, his WAFL season pre-draft was sensational.

Ray is very much drafting for the future. He looks to me like he will play for the next 6-10 years.

I agree with posters on here who don't see him as exactly what we need, and I would not want to sacrifice anything that would stop us getting what we need, such as our first draft pick. I expect us to be able to get one of Palmer/Masten/Ebert/Morton/Rioli/Selwood/etc with that pick. I also support some sort of trade to bump that pick up a little higher to get us exactly who we want.

But if there is a trade, such as Ray for Murphy, then I think we should look at it as it will improve our list. It trades from an area of strength, (tall forwards), into an area of weakness, (midfielders with pace). It doesn't give us the hard at it midfielder we need, not does it give us blistering pace. And if there is a better deal, then that's fine too. I don't really give a stuff about Ray personally.

I remember having a discussion late '04' ago about trading Polak when his trade value was high.
Late '05' we had the discussion again as his value continued to drop, people still held out hope he would come good.

Finally last year we trade him for peanuts, as he went on to have a decent season.

The same thing is going to happen with Murphy, this is the first season of discusssion trading him when we are a realistic chance of getting something decent for him.
We hang onto him there is every chance he won't break into the side next year and his trade value continues to drop...On and on it goes.

Untill we again trade him less than his worth and he goes onto forge a semi decent career and we end up with egg on our face.

We have to cut our loss's at some stage people, Farren ray is a midfielder of size. We need them.

Murphy will not get a game while Tarrant and Pavlich are running around. Yet he is too much quality for the WAFL.

I was thinking of the last 4 or 5 years, but you're right.

Hasleby went at pick 2, which backs up my point about 17 year olds that dominate the WAFL go very early in the draft.

You're right, we need to trade Murphy now because his opportunities will be limited so we should trade him before his value drops again. It's a shame that we have so many tall forwards because down the track Tarrant will be retired and Murphy will be kicking 50+ goals a year for a rival side.

Which is a shame, but its the path we took last season.

The club was in full understanding what the likely reprecussion's were going to be trading for Tarrant.

That can't be reversed now, so we must make the best of our current situation.

My inclination to trade Murphy now is more to do with him still being under contract, and therefore unable to use the PSD to force us into a poor trade as happened with Polak. We had no power in the situation at all once he had found a club for which he would make the starting 22, and held #1 PSD pick.

Agreed.

This is why Haselby could be a problem this year...I reckon Richmond or Carlton or Melbourne would jump at him

He wasn't 17 when he was drafted, he and Pavlich were both overlooked as 17yr olds.

I didn't realise how skinny Ray is. Look at image 2, which was taken just a couple of months ago.
http://images.google.com.au/imgres?...bv=2&svnum=10&hl=en&newwindow=1&safe=off&sa=G

Does it really matter? Lenny Hayes looks skinny too (Type in Lenny Hayes into the same program and look at pic 3), and I wouldn't mind him on our list. The reality is we are not going to find a Michael Voss / Chris Judd "built like a tank, moves like a panther, kicks like Ronaldo" midfielder type easily.

Ray is 189cm, so he is a tall midfielder, hes fast, has good endurance and he can get the ball in and around the packs. His kicking and decision making is average (He can kick the ball some way), but his handballing is pretty good.

So long as we don't have to pay with our first round pick or more, I think Ray would be a more than reasonable pick up. Ray for Murphy = good deal to me.

Lenny Hayes certainly isn't huge but he's bigger than Farren. The kids we drafted last year would be bigger than Ray.

I've never seen him as a ball winner, more of a receiver and link man. So if we pick him up you envisage him spending extended periods in the square next year and helping our clearance problems? I see him more as a wingman/half back/half forward.

What good is it being 189cm if you're built like a 17 year old? I'd back Hasleby to beat him in a marking contest.

I think Ray would be a handy pick up, but he'll never be a star. Murphy for Ray would be a win for the bulldogs because Murphy has much more upside, but considering our list I'd consider it.

If you consider him skinny then wouldn't that be a potential upside? He can build himself up a bit more and hence his game will improve. He was super skinny when he was drafted and looks to be a hard gainer. The bulldogs have already invested a few years in him getting to this stage, this is the best timme to pick him up.

I think he could excel in that role. There is a perception that because he is built like a stick insect that he would get crushed in the centre and hence he should be on a Wing/Flank, but I think rover is his best position. Gets the ball and has good hands to feed it out OR speed and agility to break away from the opposition. Its these qualities that saw him drafted No.4 over a guy like MacLean.

I would back Hase in a stationary marking contest against him too, but not in the air or on the lead. Again, it comes down to the "Its rare to get all the qualities you are after". Maybe Wisbey should have the last say on Farren Ray (Who says the complete opposite to me in many respects :( ):

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-93860.html

Anyway, given the (hopefully) different intention of our first pick in the draft, swapping first picks along with the players might be better for us, but whether we can achieve it is another thing altogether.
