Farren Ray

I used to watch Murphy at South Freo, excellent for them but just seems to drift out of games at the AFL level.

Could Mundy give us anything from the half back flank or does his future lie as a midfielder?

What about Warnock? Do we need another ruckman?

Thoughts?

I don't rate Murphy. He doesn't do enough for my liking. Certainly not a good trade for Ray.

We really need KPP players. I prefer Ray to stay with us, but if we have to trade him, then it should be for a very good KPP.

Deja Vu. This happens every year. A good KPP to snare via a trade is a myth, unfortunately. McDougall and Kepler Bradley are really all that exist. Even if we threw the kitchen sink (Cooney & Griffen) at Brisbane for J.Brown he won't want to play with us and we will have no midfield anyway. Apply the same logic to Riewoldt, Pavlich, Franklin, Fevola ect.

I cant believe you want Adam Hunter for Farren Ray. Wouldnt even give you Hunters shoes for Farren Ray. No offence but Hunter is ten times the player Ray is.

Best deal we would offer is a draft pick.

Tend to agree, why would West Coast give up Hunter who is a good player for ray who is barely an average player at this time? Doesn't make sense, as Dogs supporters you have to be realistic at what Faz is worth, at the moment it is not much.
I am afraid he was drafted high in a poor draft year. most of the top 20 other than Cooney haven't set the world on fire. Mclean at 5 has been good i suppose.
In strong drafts Faz wouldn't have been drafted as high and wouldn't be judged as critically.
The decision to draft Walsh at 4 in earlier year was worse as that draft was reasonably strong.
Getting back to Hunter we would have to give up Ray and a draft pick to seriously have any hope of getting him to us. A proven premiership player who is a true utility against an unproven outside running player with poor disposal.
Farren is worth a second round draft pick in my opinion unless he finishes the season with a bang.

Hunter is 27
Ray is 22

Hunter is 190cm
Ray is 187cm

Hunter has played 143 games for 2 Brownlow votes
Ray has played 73 games for 2 Brownlow votes

Personally i'd like to give Ray a full pre-season and see what he produces next year. He was training the house down before breaking his leg and that ruined his whole conditioning leading in to the season. What does it matter if we trade Ray for pick 20 this year or pick 30 next year? I reckon it's worth waiting to see.

Hunter has courage and hardness and the ability to play in kpp
Faz doesn't

To say we would get pick 20 for him is over-stating it a little. Yes we got pick 19 for McMahon but McMahon showed a lot more than Farren has in his career with us.

Happy to keep him for a year but the lad won't sign. If he doesn't want to sign then I say trade him. He is not worth going into a bidding war over, I won't be happy if we pay over the odds to keep him at the Dogs on the form he has shown for us in his 73 games so far.
In the 73 games he has played I reckon he has played 2 great ones, 11 good ones, 20 average and 40 so-so or poor games.
He is hardly a world-beater.

The problem we have is that if he wants to go home, the two Perth teams are on the bottom of the Ladder

That means he will wait to the pre season draft and we get jack for him

Thats not a good outcome

Hunter is worth more than Ray but I don't think he's the type of player we should be going for anyway.

He offers a medium/battling talling option forward or back, but we are decent in those areas with Morris and Shags down back and Johnno, Bobby, Welsh and Hahn forward.

What I like about Hunter is his hardness, he takes a good grab up forward and can play on bigger forwards down back.

He is a proven Finals player and I would very much like to see him in our colours.

Can't see it happening though.

I would really like to see us hang on to Ray and see if he can provide us with the result I know he is capable of. He is only 22 and a developing player. Any football watcher with half a brain would have to see that there is so much upside to his game moving forward. He takes the game on, he is getting bigger and he is ballsy enough to try penetrating lines with his kicking (needs improving) and running every game. At this stage the only player on our list around his age that tries to do that is Griff and unfortunately he is going to be tagged for the rest of his career and is likely to become an accumulator.

Other posters have mentioned Hunter as a possible trade and I believe that trade would be one sided towards WCE when you consider how our forward line functions currently. Hunter isn't the type of player that can hold down a KP throughout the entire season. He is a good player, but more of a Mr Fix It, going back and forward depending on his teams needs. We have a forward line that functions quite well and some depth in players that can bob up to kick a couple of goals here and there. Beyond consistent KPF we lack runners that break the lines, and with Ray being only 22 he provides more value to us than Hunter at 27.

Everything you have said I agree with.I get sick and tired of Ray being the scape goat when we have a bad game.I think he will come good and give us more consistancy.Definate up side to him.
The problem he has is he will not win with some supporters no matter what he does. They only point out his faults, never his positive side.
We have alot of supporters that once they have a mind set on a player they can only see there faults.

Having said that would I trade him, yes but only if the right trade was done for him. Everyone is tradeable.
As far as Hunter goes I don't want him.
He is one of these players who can play anywhere but not be great in one of these positions.Yes and I know how good he was in the G/Final playing forward but he does not do that consistently enough.
I would look at Hansen instead who is a good CHF but does have injury issues.Could be worth a punt.
Watched him play the other week and in a crap team he was great. He will play alot more better games at CHF than Hunter ever will.If fit he would fit into our team perfectly.
I maybe wrong but I think he is a Victorian.

It worries me a little bit that Farren hasn't signed yet. I feel he is one of our most important players in us moving forward and I don't want to see him traded or moved on for next to nothing.

i think that is the reason why people are putting rays name to a trade. the fact he hasn't signed and the intrest from the west has brought that discussion not the fact that people don't beleive he will be any good.

regarding hansen. yes his a good player but isn't he injury prone. do we really wanna be tradeing for another kpp that we may not even be able to get out on the park like williams.

My opinion on Ray has been that he would become a B or B+ grade
player. Lately I'm thinking B at best. I don't mind him and don't mind
if he stays.
As far as what he offers us, I don't think he's fast or quick, rather a
good endurance runner. Skills only so-so and not a goal kicker.
Ray can't replace West, Johnno or Acker. He's got the run to replace
Eagle but not the pace. He can't field kick or kick goals like Eagle.
Pure speculation on developing players: Higgins will be much better than
Ray. Ward - better than both Higgins and Ray. Harbrow - at least as good as Ray. Hill, Stack, O'keefe, Wood and Reid - out of those 5, at least
one should be better than Ray and one or two others as good as Ray.
What all this highly opionioned conjecture is leading up to is that we can
afford to trade Ray. Only problem is I'm not sure we can get a fair trade
that will help us.
I think if Farren wants to stay then we should keep him.

If the Mercat wants to stay then he's worth keeping. If we let him go we need to get a KPP for forward or back, Hansen or Graham.

What disapoints me about Farren he doesn't have seem to have improved. I remember the great game he played against the pies in the 2006 finals
what a ripper this kid is. I though he could be another Nigal Lappin be he has fell short

I'd be happy with Graham for Ray.

Graham has had some injuries the last couple of years which have set him back, however he played every game except the GF for us in 2006, and was quite good.

I cant see Hansen going anywhere, he just signed a three year deal and he genuinely loves the club.

Remember thinking what happened to Graham? As you said, his 06 season was pretty good and even though he missed out on the Grand Final, I would of predicted by 08 he would be a pretty solid defender. He seems to have went backwards, but I suppose injuries explain that. Still, when I have seen Graham play lately, he hasn't shown a lot IMO.

Sorry to be bumping this thread up the order as this Friday nights final is our most important game for the last 10 years, but David Mundy from Freo looks like he will be moving clubs next season could be an ideal swap with Farren Ray at the trade table.

Obviously I'm not much of a Ray fan and chances are he may well come back into the team soon enough and play a blinder and all the fence sitting supporters like me love him again, however I've been a fan of David Mundy for a while now. Had it not been for Rhode we technically may have allready had him instead of trading that pick for Steven Koops at the time.

Anyway its food for thought and not a totally ridiculous trade prospect for either side. Mundy is a decent sized, quite quick HBF/Midfielder fairly hard at it and defends relatively well could play a valuable role.

Does Mundy have the same upside as Ray in his ability to break the lines and carry the ball? What is his disposal like, is it at Rays level (which admittedly isn't fantastic) and does he have the capability to become a top line decision maker. I'm mainly asking this because I haven't seen enough of Mundy, and unless he has ticked these boxes then there isn't much point in making the trade.

I like Ray as a player and believe he has potential coming out of his proverbial, and if a trade was to come up I would hope it would be for a player who offers at least the same service in his position and potential that he does, or a player that can fill an obvious gap on our list.

Mundy has very very good disposal. In the top-3 users of the ball at Fremantle (insert "thats not saying much" joke). Already a good decision maker, he is a natural footballer.

Criticised by some for being "soft" although since he has moved towards the middle he has been very hard at the ball. He has more value to Freo than Ray appears to have to the WB. From what I can tell.
