should we have picked him up?

still young, going alright at the saints, wouldn't have cost us much, west australian....

The majority on this board were against getting Ray, but he looks more capable than Browne and many others in our starting 22. For the record I did say we should look at getting him.

Probably would've cost us Zac Clarke so hell no.

They only wanted a pick upgrade though, they got pick 31 for 48 and Ray. It's quite likely Clarke would have slipped late as anything. We would have got 48 and given them 37. Clarke would easily slip to 48.

I called for Murphy to be traded for ray for the past two years...He would have done more than Murphy has done over that period, that is for sure...Whether he would go on to have a good career...Debatable

Why would the Bulldogs trade him and pick 48 to us for pick 37 when they could get 31 from the Saints? We would have to give up more (i.e. Suban) to do the deal.

A player for player trade may have done the deal. Campbell or Murphy the most likely.

But Ray wanted to stay in Vic anyway so it's all rather irrelevant.

This board is getting ridiculous. If we had traded for Ray you guys would have wanted to blow the clubhouse up and right now memories and his mates would have been lining up to call him a gutless downhill skier and putting the boots into Harvey for trading draft picks.

Agreed. Hasn't much more at the Saints than he did at the Dogs.

As Ogrebait said, I don't think he was ever that keen on coming over this way so it was always a bit academic ... but I'm fairly sure I was in the "give it a shot camp", and now that we've begun the season it would be nice to have him instead of say Browne or Head who are clearly way out of form (and need to be at absulte top form to be considered AFL anyway it would seem).

Having said that, he would hardly have made much of difference in the last two games and he would be just one more thing that we would be complaining about that the club has done that is wrong.

Beat me to it Ogre.

He didnt want to come home and they had a better offer on the table - no way we get to keep Clarke if we get ray.

Memories correct me if I am wrong ...didn't you want to grab Armstrong, Ray and Cousins and try and push for a flag?

Heard of the PSD? We could have used that as a bargaining chip if he wanted to come back to WA, and the player has to sign off on any deal if he is out of contract. Granted if he didn't want to come back then it's moot, but no one knows for sure if he did or didn't.

just my thuoghts, from his new clubs perspective:

Probably not the sort of player you need, and wouldn't look near as good in your midfield as he has in ours so far this year. In fact I'd go so far as to say he'd probably be copping it right now on your board if he'd ended up here.

The one thing I'm a fan of about Mark Harvey was the way he went recruiting players instead of trading this year, great move imo.

p.s he is anything but gutless, to the above poster

Armstrong? Not really. It would depend on how well he interviewed with me, but I would have looked at it for sure.

But yes, if we went with Cousins, Rich, Robinson, Ray, I am fairly certain we would be about 50% more competitive than we are at the moment, likely enough to be a finals contender this year. Notice the 4 players I wanted are all midfielders, and pretty decent at it too.

So you`re still after the quick fix hey?

As Tassiesaint pointed out Ray would not have fit in as well at Freo due to the fact that we have been very average and Ray is an outside receiver. Thats not meant to be an insult to him I just don`t see him sparking a team, rather finishing off the good work by others. Peake plays like Ray, we don`t need another.

Cousins did his hammy so wouldn`t be contributing anything yet and Rich never wanted to play for us, so he was bypassed for Hill who will come on in time.

We are rebuilding, we drafted some good kids and time will tell whether we made the right call:thumbsu:

I am so glad that Daniel Rich is at the lions will be a gun for 10+ years! But the reality is that Stephen Hill will develop more and i think you guys made the right choice. But when Freo fans say Brisbane got Daniel Rich and our prospect is better i get so angry because we didnt have both of them to choose from.Daniel Rich is playing really well at the moment and everyone expects that. And on the topic of Farren Ray yes i think you guys should of got him but time will tell!

I wasn't sure about Armstrong ...just seemed to vaguely recall.

Ray was quoted in an newspaper article saying he wanted to complete his studies in Melb and was quite settled there. Not sure how much weight to put on that?

Personally pretty happy we didn't trade.

Rich is going to be a very decent - that is all I would care about mate, personally I wouldn't give a stuff what opposition fans think.

Depends, with the keeping of all our star players who will be retiring in a few years does it tell us we are going for a flag within the next few years or rebuilding? It's a mixed message really, either way ALL the players I pointed out would have been cheap, we wouldn't have lost much at all to get them, and 2 of them would be rookies and hence part of a long term solution. The other 2 would simply be taking the spots of duds like Browne/Head/whoever.

Hill is never going to be like Rich though, so it's moot comparing the two. One is a ball winner like Palmer, the other is a possibly glossy finisher/receiver/runner like Headland. To think Hill is filling the gap Rich would have is quite ridiculous as I think we need plenty of ball winners in our team to ensure we can actually get the ball from stoppages out to players like Hill. Hill to me is another Ibbotson really. At the moment we only really have Palmer and Haselby as ball winners, with Schammer not doing too bad. Geelong have 6 midfielders who average over 20 disposals a game each, we have 2.
