It doesn't take me much to get crapping on about motor cars ...

We have talked about them a bit here in there and the 'Women in Carparks' thread has got me thinking ...

How fast have you ever been in a car ?

Were you driving or did you put your life in the hands of somebody else ?

Did you get busted ?

Did you nearly kill yourself ?

Did you poo yer pants ?

Do have a partner who continually drives too fast and scares you sh'tless ?

The fastest car I have ever driven was way back in 1982 - an older brother went out and bought himself a Sigma Turbo and he let me take it out on the SE Freeway in Adelaide for go.

Saw about 210 km/h on the clock at one stage but man it was scary - the damn car was wobbling something fearful and the high pitched scream from the turbocharger was deafening.

Absolute white knuckle stuff really and it taught me that you just can't bolt some 'go faster bits' on a standard car and epect it to be safe reliable transport.

The brother blew the Sigma Turbo up soon after - but boy it was beast.

Driven a few ex-South Aussie Police V8 Commodore Taxis as well, they were all brutally fast and powerful cars but nothing compared to that Sigma ...

as you can see I'm a petrolhead :D

cheers

I had my VH Commodore up to 190kmh along a gun barrell straight stretch of road. I had 4 other people in the car with me. The car handled beautifully, sitting nicely on the road. I had to slow down in the end as we were running out of road!

I was driving the same Commodore along the Princes Highway, heading up to Port Augusta. I was sitting on a comfortable 160kmh when I noticed one of the said SA Police V8 Commodore Taxis coming up behind me.

I thought I was going to get done for being 50kmh over the speed limit but this cop car went straight past me as if I was standing still! It must have been doing 230 - 240 + kmh.

The cop car had this huge CB aerial which was bolted to the front bumper bar and must have been about 2 metres tall. The noise this aerial made was huge! Made the cop car sound as if it was howling!

I think I have slowed right down in my old age though! Now that I've got kids, I rarely ever go above the limit! I think I have a greater awareness of my own mortality and also know that their is too much at stake now!

my brother in law had a TD Cortina with the 4.1l V6.

I was in it going > 180 but you were stuffed if you had to stop or turn :D

I got an EA model Falcon (with dodgy hydraulic front shocks) up to 200 km/h near Devonish (10 km from Benalla), just to see if it could.

Scared the living shyte out of me. Haven't done anything so stupid since.

Touched on a topic close to my heart.

Fastest ever been in a car: My mate's Dad's 600SEL 245km and had more left, handled it like a tank. On the Eastern freeway from Burke St entry to Hoddle St, reckon we did it in 25 seconds. Boys in the back sucking on VB's music on loud, great way to go to the pub.

Fastest I've ever driven a car: My new 200SX in 1996, driving to Echuca, got up to 220km but the road was bumpy and the car began to float a little, very dangerous. Felt steady up to about 180 but then got a bit scetchy and unsafe.

Plenty of times, in Germany, I have been over 200 and had a Porsche ROAR past me. I have no idea what speed they were doing, 300+???

Speed is awesome.

My uni car was a 323 and was a piece of crap, once I started working I ditched it and bought a VL Commodore with the Nissan 3.0 L.

That Commodore brought out the rev head in me. Drove for Perth to Albany sitting between 160 and 180 kmh. Not altogether that fast in itself but pretty good for sustained speed.

After the Commodore I had a couple of 4WDs but now I'm back in the market for a fast car. Hmmm those imported 2nd hand Toyota Supras look good! Yeah Baby Yeah!

Oh yeah - i remember those Cortina's with that giant lump of cast iron in the nose commonly known as the Ford 4.1 straight six.

Absolute death traps, but the grunt was sensational.

Every one i knew had worn out front ends and stuffed brakes.

Way OTT those things.

cheers

LOVED my Cortina, bestest/worstest car ive had.

Bestest for getting to wherever i wanted to get to quick (used to do 180k's as a matter of course on the old Calder between Tulla and Sunbury). Think the quickest it was ever up to was the 200k mark.

Worstest was for all the faults BSA said, shoddy brakes, bad shockers, drank fuel like no tomorrow.

Id buy it back in a second!! (If i wasnt planning on being around for to much longer that is).

There's a crappy old Cortina lurking in just about everyones past isn't there ?:p

For me it was as a kid the first car my parents ever bought was a 1974 Wagon, but this one had the 2 litre 4cyl in it and was a real gem.

After dad died, mum sold it - for a Mitsubishi Galant !:(

I had a Cortina once too - It was a '65 Mark I and a bluddy great little bomb it was too.

Gave it away to a student friend who took it back to his family farm when he graduated.

Its still going but is just a paddock bomb used for transporting bales of hay and the odd sheep or goat these days.

cheers

Satay Chicken - sorry, missed the second part !!!

I'm sorry, but there is no such animal as a 4.1 litre V6 !!! There was the normal 3.0 litre V6 from the Capri, or the South African 3.1 V6.

I had a worked (don't question me on the sense of it!) 4.1 in my '78 TE, 350 holley, port-matched extractors, big Stally (yes - T bar!), lots of other special goodies which I could crap on about. Top speed the corgi reached was 188, but as all intelligent people would know, standard speedos are highly inaccurate 140+ - so who knows. Quickest time was 14.2 (not street tyres!), officially timed at Willowbank in February 1989. Not too shabby for slushbox 6 .... Went in a few shows as well, but never won anything !!!!

I used to also race my cousin's blown chevy Kingswood. Big bucks 454, powerglide, 10" diff, with all the goodies, all shoved into a chocolate brown HJ wagon!!! Best time was low-10's .... 10.25 from memory. Never had the opportunity to take it top end, though.

Party ended when he got married .... always wanted to stick the donk into something smaller, but never got the chance.

Had my VS Commodore at 180 km/h earlier this year on a straight stretch of road out in the country, which is okay because there's no way I could go that fast around a bend or anything.

By the end I had to slow down because cars were getting closer and closer coming the other way :D

Been in the back seat of a Skyline GTR with 3 others in the car while we were doing 220 in the middle of Williamstown. Frightening experience with the twin turbos going off their nut. The scary thing was it was down the wrong side of the road taking over 6 cars in 1 fowl swoop and there was plenty more left in the godzila as it was then the fastest in Australia. it was up near the 400kw mark at the flywheel. Awesome experience

BSA - you dont know fear until you have been in a car with my mother!!!

She will go 140 down Mitchell Freeway in a DATSUN 200B!!!!!!!!!! The ****ing thing is falling apart as you go you know!! I tell you if mum's car had wings it would take off.

I drive everywhere at around 70 to 80...i just cant be arsed putting in the concentration to drive fast.

The fastest I've been was in the VN I used to drive, got it up to 185 in a 60 zone. But I only had about 20 to 30 seconds to do it in as it was residential and we were coming up to a set of lights. I always wanted to go over 200 though.

hate to disagree with you there Mud & Blood but there most definately was a 4.1l Cotrina brought out to compete with the even more crazy 5 litre Torana. It was the standard V6 from the XC (XD ?) falcon at the time.

I am not really a rev head so will not be surprised if I am proven wrong but I am fairly certain on this one.

ahhhhhh....the Torana .....antoher classic piece of Australian motoring....there seemed to be a challenge between Ford and Holden as to who could fit the biggest engine into the smallest care.

My first car was a Torana....but the HB model which was the first brought out with a whoel 1200cc engine. When I got it it was 22 years old...bought it for $700 and sold it for $200 after a prang.

Pile of Dung it was.

The fastest car i have been in was a Nascar down at Calder Park...my favourite aussie nascar racer was driving at the time.

I was scared when i was climbing thru the window to get in but when we got goin i had the time of my life! Best experience ever.:D

I've had my VS Commodore up to 200 on the back roads near home. Running out of road stopped me from going any quicker.

But my truly most frightening car experience was at Bathurst during the 1998 race weekend. Through a friend we had resident on track passes and on a quick lap between support events I was a passenger taking photos out the front of my mates VN. The 'dipper' at 70km/h is a truly terrifying experience when viewed through a camera lens.
