$17 for McDonald's just seems wild. The cost of a post mix drink is next to nothing so you are really paying for a burger and chips which is like for like with a pub or fish and chip shop or independent burger place. I know the double cheeseburger (double quarter pounder equivalent but better) and fries is about $22. I think the single is $18. I know the days of $5 Macca's/HJs meals are long gone but it seems out of step.
Honestly it's even more awful below the surface because the listed prices are just what you end up paying without points, deals, coupons, etc.

Unless you have the app to get X% off, this meal or that meal for $X, accrue points to get your coffees for free, it makes zero dollars and cents. Not everyone has the time or energy to minimax every transaction with a fast food place.

My ultimate old man yelling at cloud moment is when I bought my first car and Maccas runs were on the menu for the first time, I got change from a $10 for a medium Big Mac meal and two cheeseburgers.

I CBF having an app, account etc. for every single thing. You go to buy a t-shirt from some generic store in a shopping centre and they first thing they want to know is if you are a member. It's not a footy club m8.

My main memories of McDonald's prices are Happy Meals were $3 and soft serve cones were 30c and then outrageously went up to 50c. Google tells me a Happy Meal is $5.75 and a soft serve is $1.15 which sounds pretty cheap given how long ago I last had either. That makes sense to me but a meal being $15-20 doesn't.

If the kids are happy with 3 nuggets or a cheeseburger it’ll cost you that much. If you’re in the drive thru and the kids are screaming for 6 nuggets then you’re in for a ridiculous surprise.

Same with travelling now.

App for this and an App for that and there's no other way.

I had a kebab yesterday from a local place. Went to pay and the girl asked 'cash or card' and I remembered I had a few notes so paid cash. Something oddly satisfying about that being the end of the transaction.

Watching teenagers bumble around trying to figure out the change is generally a battle though.

My friend payed cash and it was 50c change. The checkout chick was clueless what to do, stood looking at the change draw section and obviously gave up and gave him a $2 coin. 🤣

agreed. I bought a burger, chips, and soft drink from the local fish and chip shop yesterday for just under that.

I was in Snitz the other day. Had a delish Spice of Life chicken schnitzel burger. At $15.50 it was worth the extra over say a $10 McSpicy.

Where it gets more pricey is that they don't discount their 'meals'. Regular chips and 600 ml drink are $5 each. Grill'd charge $6.90 for regular chips. So depending which burger you pick you are looking at $25-29. Whereas Maccas add about $5 for a medium meal = $15. KFC is about the same.

Slightly different markets I guess. Apparently Snitz and Grill'd are known as 'fast-casual' not fast food. Our food arrived in 10 minutes, so not practical for a drive thru. But it was freshly cooked and nicely presented rather than slapped together off the shelf.

It's where they make there money. It's not the main part of the meal it's the sides and drinks with the huge markup on what it costs.

It's what usually stops me from going to these burger joints for dinner unless I'm eating out. Yeah I'm happy to pay $15-20 for your burger but when a small serving of chips starts at $6-7 it just puts me off for take away food.

It doesn’t bother me too much as I try and cut out chips a bit from the diet, plus the burgers are usually a bit more filling than those at fast food restaurants. Plus I feel the chips usually need the dipping sauce to more on top again.

Although I think Nando’s does a slight discount for a meal, but there I usually go a garlic pita as a side.
