Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

One of the favourite films from my youth and, in my opinion, easily the best of the teen coming of age comedies. Written by Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky) and directed by Amy Heckerling (Clueless), it featured a then cast of virtual unknowns which would later become a veritable Who's Who? of American Stars. These include:

Sean Penn
Forest Whitaker
Nicholas Cage (as Nicholas Coppola)
Jennifer Jason Leigh
Phoebe Cates
Eric Stoltz
Judge Reinhold

Penn is just amazing as Jeff Spicoli, the perennially stoned slacker.

A small bit of Seinfeld related trivia: Judge Reinhold would later receive his only major award nomination as Elaine's 'close talking' boyfriend in the episode The Raincoats.

I first watched it on TV in the 90s and the TV version is full of alternate takes to tame it down. I was surprised when I saw the DVD version as its almost a different film.
