Old man Otis is on the Freo board, surely being in that position we could get him to apply for a rule change so we can get Dillon.

He's on the footy sub-committee as well. You'd have to imagine that it would be quite risky for another club to draft him given the strong ties to our club.

A team could draft him but Freo would be on the phone to his manager before his flight even left the tarmac.

I'd tell Dillon to "tank" the other interviews. Not so much "I don't want to play for you" but more "I want to play for the club my Dad played for. He was only 2 games short of qualification". Given the fanfare bestowed on the father sons I think he could get away with it.

I mean seriously, is it reasonably to lambaste him for wanting to play for us when pretty much every other club has a father son on their list and he only misses by 2 games.

I don't think it would actually happen, but I think it should. Seriously is 100 really that different to 98?

It shows how these numbers all become an arbitrary measure of something that isn't really quantifiable - was his father a significant and connected player to the Dockers? Was he a true 'club man'? Has that created a sense of connectedness in their family such as the son wants to play his part in the tradition? These can't be answered by simple numbers, but that is not how our world works these days - we have to quantify things and so the answer to those questiona is "100 games = yes"

Having said that, if the player expresses a desire to be considered a F/S, surely there can be some sort of appeal and "extraordinary exception" granted or some such. I understand they can't just shift it to 98, because sure enough there will be someone on 95 in a few years and so on. But as mentioned, were not talking about something that can be bolted to an arbitrary number.

The other issue is that you could have a player that bleeds for Freo but can’t get out on the park enough to quite reach 100 games. Should at the very least be either 100 games or 5/6 years on the list.

Just sit there, don't speak and hold the 3rd finger up. Probably get him drafted to Collingwood. "Appears like a supporter".

Like for instance Morabito? Although dont know if he bleeds Freo.

There should be a yearly equivalent.

The father-son rule should be scrapped. As should academies, zones and anything that alters the draft.

Regardless of F/S eligibility, surely other clubs with the recent experiences of players going to home states would be fairly unwilling to draft such a player knowing after two years he is likely to go home. This isn't just a case of wanting to be in WA, or Dad played for them, but Dad is on the Freo Board. That's next level. Wouldn't have thought it was worth the risk unless an interview indicated otherwise.

Stephen played 41 games for the Swan Districts before he was drafted. If he'd played 150 for Swan Districts or 100 for Freo his son would qualify. Surely there's grounds for eligibility given his 41 games for Swan Districts were in 3 of the years before Freo was formed.

Yeah the father/son rules need to allow for more combinations - especially given (as rightly pointed out), Stephen O'Reilly played the WAFL games for Swans *before* Fremantle's inception, meaning he couldn't have played them for Freo. Be different if he played them while on our list or after we delisted him, but the fact is he couldn't have played for Freo any sooner.

He helped us get Pav though, so that should stand for something
