There are literally hundreds of father-son combos in AFL. Who do you think are the most famous (popular) ones?

My first would be Sergio Silvagni and Stephen Silvagni from Carlton. They have both played great footy and are well know throughout the footy world.

Also Peter and Paul Hudson from the Doggies. Both played hundreds of footy games and Paul averages 2 goals a match, not sure about Peter's statistics.

RF1, for our sakes, let's hope that David and Jason Cloke don't get added to this list!

Ok here is the best father son combination with the son currently still playing

Mal Micheal and Clem Micheal
Not bad

I would also have to say the cornes father and son combo ranks closely behind

And the knights one

EJ Whitten and EJ Whitten Jnr,
Jnr played almost 150 games ,played for Victoria and retired at 25 due to a knee injury, if not for that he porbably would of played 250 games , a very good player in his own right.

Dave and Luke Darcy

I agree. The Silvagni's stand out from the crowd.

But how about John Kennedy Sr and Jr as a worthwhile pair. Senior played 164 games but was a giant in the game while Junior played a leisurely 241 games in a brilliant Hawks line up, all with a heart problem!

Still, I'll only remember him for being awarded a ridiculously dubious mark in the first quarter of the 1987 Grand Final. The result went the right way for me but being a true supporter, I don't like to give anything away.

I read somewhere once that SA and WA clubs can draft players under the father son rule if their father played a significant number of games in the SANFL or WAFL.

Is this so ?

Must not be or Port would have draft Kane Cornes under that rule, but it just rings a bell.

Anyone ?

Jod - Bryan Cousins (Bennys father) was an absolute champion at WANFL as they called it in those olden days and won a Sandover Medal playing for either Perth or East Freo, I'm thinking Perth. He tried his luck with Geelong but I'm not too sure how he went there.

ptw, Unfortunately at the moment, under the father/son rule, a son can only be drafted to the Crows or Power if his father has served for 5 years as a coach/executive/board member. The Crows missed out on the Cornes boys because they sacked Stud after only 4 years. They should have put him on the Board for a year, then they could have picked up Chad or Kane. Eventually, in many years to come, one of our current players' sons can be drafted, but you'd have to say the SA teams are disadvantaged under this rule.

GO THE MIGHTY PIES!!

what about
dustin and ken fletcher

or

ken fraser (one of the greatest essendon chf's) and mark fraser

john and peter somerville

just another couple, tim forsyte (spelling is way off) but anyway, the aussie high jumper, you all know who i mean, his father played for essendon
and tony ronaldson, titans basketballer, his father played footy for hawthorn

Huge talent and dickie knees? The McIntosh's. I think they's be one of the top duos if not for injury.

jod- the word I got was that BC senior was naturally talented, but lazy as all hell. Apparently that's why he wasn't a VFL star after leaving the WAFL. But that's only what I heard

I don't think the interstate clubs are really disadvantaged by the father-son rule, except in those cases where either a SANFL or WAFL star chose not to play VFL (the Michaels?), or in the cases where they stayed there after their careers were over, and consequently their kids and grandkids are Vics....

Flying the flag for the Roos are the THREE generations of Dwyers and two generations of Dugdales who have donned the royal blue and white colours.

By the way, for those who don't know, the father-son rule came into operation because the then VFL wanted to ensure that Ron Barassi Jr. could follow in his father's footsteps (Ron Barassi Snr. was killed in action during WW2) by playing for Melbourne.
