Carlton recruiting manager Wayne Hughes has conceded the club has some tough decisions to make over whether to pick up one or all of the sons of three former champions at November's NAB AFL Draft.
The Blues have first call under the father/son rule on Tomi Johnston, the son of four-time premiership player Wayne, Sam Sheldon, whose father Ken played in three flag-winning sides for Carlton, and the son of 1994 Brownlow Medalist Greg Williams, Jake Williams.
Sheldon and Williams, who represented Oakleigh and Calder respectively in last Saturday's TAC Cup Grand Final, are not attending this week's draft camp but will be assessed by club recruiting staff at state screenings this weekend along with Johnston who won the best-and-fairest for TAC Cup side Sandringham last year.
All three are compact midfielders with a knack for winning the ball and using it well.
"Obviously people who have watched them play would know they have certain qualities so it's going to be some tough decisions have to be made," Hughes told SEN.
"But we'll do whatever we can to support the sons of our former champions and do what we can for them."
If the Blues decide to nominate one of the youngsters, they will be required to use their third-round pick. The club's second round selection - No.19 - would need to be sacrificed next if two of the boys are father/son selections while Carlton's first round selection - No.1 overall - would need to be used to acquire the third father/son.
"We'll talk to their families in due course and let them know where we are going," Hughes said.
"What we have to do is take whatever is the best decision for Carlton and that's what we'll do."
