Father/son dilemma for Blues
1:49:00 PM Wed 4 October, 2006
Angus Morgan
Sportal for afl.com.au

Carlton recruiting manager Wayne Hughes has conceded the club has some tough decisions to make over whether to pick up one or all of the sons of three former champions at November's NAB AFL Draft.

The Blues have first call under the father/son rule on Tomi Johnston, the son of four-time premiership player Wayne, Sam Sheldon, whose father Ken played in three flag-winning sides for Carlton, and the son of 1994 Brownlow Medalist Greg Williams, Jake Williams.

Sheldon and Williams, who represented Oakleigh and Calder respectively in last Saturday's TAC Cup Grand Final, are not attending this week's draft camp but will be assessed by club recruiting staff at state screenings this weekend along with Johnston who won the best-and-fairest for TAC Cup side Sandringham last year.

All three are compact midfielders with a knack for winning the ball and using it well.

"Obviously people who have watched them play would know they have certain qualities so it's going to be some tough decisions have to be made," Hughes told SEN.

"But we'll do whatever we can to support the sons of our former champions and do what we can for them."

If the Blues decide to nominate one of the youngsters, they will be required to use their third-round pick. The club's second round selection - No.19 - would need to be sacrificed next if two of the boys are father/son selections while Carlton's first round selection - No.1 overall - would need to be used to acquire the third father/son.

"We'll talk to their families in due course and let them know where we are going," Hughes said.

"What we have to do is take whatever is the best decision for Carlton and that's what we'll do."

On a hypothetical.

If one of the Cornes's or say Darcy decided to walk out on their club after the end of their contract could we draft them under the f/s rule?

Does everyone here think, like me, that the AFC will now probably never ever have a father/son pick?

I mean what are the odds?

The entire rule has been a joke, for SA clubs, that is.

nah we'll get there it'll just be another 12 years or more. Macca has a son, D Jars i think has one, Roo's woman (sorry i dont know her name) is pregnant (be a boy please), there is a few, just not for 10 years yet. pretty dodgy! if cornesy coached one more season at the crows Chad and Kane wouldve been picked up by AFC as F/S picks.

You're not alone as I don't think St Kilda has had too many father/son players. Notably: Plugger, Harvey, Frawley & Loewe all have daughters. Cloning may need some serious consideration to ensure Roo Jnrs are running around in years to come.

Well they could take the best of the three with their third round pick and still have their first two picks to select on anyone.

So if you were looking at it purely analytically, you'd have to weigh up whether the 2nd best father/son is worth more than (/as much as) a high 2nd round pick. Probably not, I'd wager.

Tyson Edwards has 3 sons, Benny Hart has a son, we may be a few years off, but we will have our day IF the rules still apply!?!?!

Now watch Benny get picked up by someone else with the intention of adding experience to a raw but up-and-coming backline, he'll then enjoy an Indian summer, play on to game 411 and then later have his boy suit up for that club on the F/S.

Is this an example of a Dreamcatcher, DT?? ;) :p

Nah, that example would be if the AFL comes out and raises the minimum Father/Son games requirement to 312 :D

Jesse Aish qualifies

Dont think we weill need to use him as a father son though as he will proably still be there when we have our first pick.

If you would consider him a first round pick then you'd use the father son rule to guarantee you get him but only use your 3rd rd pick. Saving the first rd pick for another good player.

In reality Jesse is probably not a third rd pick and the Crows might only pick him up if he's still available with later picks or not at all.
