Can anyone give me a good reason why Brett Ebert, son of Russell Ebert, should not be eligible to be recruited by Port Adelaide under the Father-Son rule?

After all, Russell played about 390 games for the Port Adelaide Magpies, why should this not be recognised?

Well should be allowed.
Probably because he didn't play for an AFL club - shit, PA1870 is going to get started about the hole VFL/AFL thing again wont he.

The issue is already being discussed in the thread started by Bubbelouis "Should the Father Son Rule Be Extended".

There should be some accomodation within the rules to allow the sons of SA greats like Russel Ebert play for the Adelaide clubs. It was only the sheer luck of the draft that allowed Graeme Cornes's two sons to play for an Adelaide based club. But how about if Barrie Robran's two sons were just starting out their careers as 17/18 year olds? Shouldn't Adelaide or Port Adelaide get a chance under father-son? Ebert, Cornes, and Robran are all clearly South Australian champions and their kids should be allowed to carry on their legacy as part of either Port Adelaide or Adelaide.

In Bubbaloius's thread, I liked Darky's suggestion on a future modification for the father-son rule.

Does this mean Adelaide get the pick of the remaining eight teams?

Quite frankly, the father & son rule is overrated anyway. Very, very rarely will you get a top five draft pick under the rule. Generally they will be picked up only if they are definitely round two or better.

The Pies have picked up Nick Davis, Rhyce Shaw and Jason Cloke in recent years. Davis and Shaw were touted as possible top 10 picks. Cloke was an All-Australian. Did we do substantially better than market value. I think marginally, but who knows?

I think that the Adelaide/Perth Clubs should just hang on to their second round picks and shut up. The Nort Flower ain't the Port Adelaide Magpies anyway! I LOVE the Port Adelaide Magpies, but I wouldn't even throw Dynamic Lifter on the Flower!
