Well Laidley did say there would be some pain before the gain... but still why is St Kilda a favorite for the spoon with all their first round selections... It really should be about time they delivered...

l would think the Bulldogs should be equal favorites with us for the spoon. If freo can learn to win a couple of games outside WA, then they are a real good chance of makin the 8, in regards to the saints, well they should take another step forward next year, might not make the 8, but should be knocking on the door.

AFL could have their way though, Roos and Bullies struggling down the bottom of the ladder.

i only think that they are waiting for the inevitable, and with the way that the trade deals seem to be done from now on. it seems to be a cash saving mechanism where you cast off good recruits in the hope of picking up someone that might be able to play.

2003 delistings if they dont improve this yr: shagga and kingy.

as for 2003 the season we have the same number of players as every other team there is no reason not to be optimistic as youth brings adrenilin and excitement, just like the developing yrs of the late 80s to early 90s, we were not great but boy did we put up a fight.;)

One vote of confidence for Dean Laidley...

only 4 regulars from last season are missing for this coming season...

Martyn, Blakey, Cochrane & Choppy...and even that list, with the exception of Micky, didn't have great form for most of the season...

I'm not the only one worried...

i agree stewart,

only 4 players are missing from last year. and none of them had great years.

and we are equal favourites for the wooden spoon ?

ridiculous

dont forget, we finished seventh last year. and had we had beaten west coast, we could have finished as high as fifth. and had we have had some luck with the close ones during the year (sydney, geelong, melbourne), we may have finished even higher.

People will say "but you don't have Pagan the Coaching Mastermind anymore"

I think thats what people will be basing the assessment on. We were good because of pagan - without him - we will be crap.

Player disention could be a big thing though if there is indeed a problem. Without the respect of the players (which I think Dean would have) it could really be an uphill battle

(I am still positive though !!)

get serious, there is no way that we are headed for the spoon. i can't even see the doggies getting the spoon... they'll be better next year.

my pick is carlton.

BTW is there any way of placing a bit that we don't get the spoon?

Wearn't the Eagles and Cats amongst the favourites for the spoon at the start of 2002? The Eagles made the finals and the Cats had some impressive wins (notably against Collingwood and Essendon) before running out of steam.

And I don't think too many people picked the Blues as wooden spooners.

Someone will get a hidious run with injuries and that will be the difference

to be honest I think Carlton and St Kilda will most likely be the ones fighting for the wooden spoon because they seem to be the ones that continually get injured and don't necessarily have the depth to cover it

I wouldn't say we continually get injured. Look to the books...2002 was a one-off!

Yep you are pretty much right.

Bulldogs will win the spoon. Kangaroos will have a good chance of making the 8. St Kilda will and freo wont, but not by far.

How much is Essendon worth, I might put a few bob on them.

They still didn't pick up a ruckman and only have Hille & Salmon and have lost Caracello, Blumfield & Heffernan and with a few key injuries and that may struggle.

They don't even look like making the 8!

Your discussion on the Bulldogs and Blues' chances for the wooden spoon have been removed because it's got stuff all to do with North Melbourne.

Fine with that...He started the rubbish about "coming from a Carlton supporter..."

cheers

Ok ill play the devils advocate to a degree. Those 4 player we are missing will be replaced by kids who are finding their feet, not only that, some of the missing will play against us! We have a new coach and a new game plan to learn. We also have a youth policy, so it stands to reason we would be giving the kids more ground time to learn. We wont beat Port this year, so delete 2 wins, and the close ones we won, we will lose bcos of the extra inexperience. This puts us towards the bottom of the ladder, I think a couple of years of low finishes with experimentation of younger players will actually help us. Don’t get me wrong, im sure it will be better for our young guys to play well and make the 8 this year (even win the flag, hey I can dream too)………but! my brain tells me to expect a lower finish.

I can understand us being one of the favourites for the spoon. Nobody rates our list and most people think it was Pagan that dragged us through the mess that was last season and got us into the finals. He was very important of course but that view discounts the resolve of the players which I think was far more important. It also seems to be perceived that Pickett was our last matchwinner or game breaker and there's some truth in that but I would limit Byron's "game breaking" status to about 3 games last season,he was solid in a few others and ordinary in a few as well so ,while it's true we have to find his 40 goals somewhere (not to mention hardness at the man and ball!),it's easy for "outsiders" to over rate his overall impact. We're certainly going to need the same resolve and team spirit from all the players again, not to mention that certain young players simply must step up and show us what they can do consistently in the seniors, and this is Laidley's challenge. If he can engender that same spirit then we could be finals bound again ,if not then I hope it's a strong draft next year!

Probably the same people that trot out the old "No Carey No North" line!!

We did play finals footy without Carey for the year did we not?

Not fussed at all and if anything takes the pressure off a young team.

Cheers
