It's hard to suggest a new beer when we don't know what you've had before, but Hoegaarden and potato chips goes down well.

Or you can just drink Guinness - That IS the snack.

Not much to know, really. I have only really drunk the basic beers, VB, Carlton Draught, Crownies, James Boag, Melbournes, Caronas, etc.

I'll give Hoegaarden a go, though. Should be nice. :)

If you want a "session" beer try something czech, like a pilsener urquell or budvar. These (well i think) have a nice flavour to them but go down easy.

And if the pies win you can try some geelong bitter.;)

I really don't like hoegaarden, too fruity for me and not really the sort where you knock a few back and are still enjoying the taste. You may still be keen on it, a lot of people are, but it's more a boutique beer than a drinking beer (although vb is a drinking beer if you believe the adds!). For reference, it's flavour comes from orange peel and oregano and it's a 'white beer'.

Seriously, get your hands on coopers pale ale, put it on ice, when you get it, put it on its head (very carefully, you dont want a boy) and rotate from the base to break up the sediment. Choice :). It's a well priced beer, still a wee bit fruity, but has a much 'beerier' flavour.

Man I'm hanging out for a coopers now :o

Blasphemies in this thread against Hoegaarden!

:p

It is an epic summer beer, or one to be enjoyed in the crisp early evening.

It was actually just in my head at the time because I'd been invited to shindig at the Belgian Beer Garden, which I incidentally can't go to because I am going to a Pirate Party for International Talk Like A Pirate Day instead :thumbsu:

Cooper's Pale is a good option, as are James Squire and Little Creatures :thumbsu:

At the moment:

Little Creatures White Rabbit
Knappstein Lager
Weihenstephaner Pilsner
James Squires Hop Thief
Schofferhoffer Hefeweizen

Baltika and Stella Artois.

Can anyone shed some light on those two? Any good?

Dont know anything about Baltika, but Stella isn't much chop IMO.

It seems to be served in places that attempt to be a little bit fancy and is priced accordingly. It's pretty standard larger. I'd lump it with other international beers which are basic beers but priced highly because they're imported a la' Heineken.

Try something local if you're going for a larger, we have the climate to brew them nicely come winter.

Agreed, Stella Artois is a very over rated beer so so taste and nothing seperates it from the pack, also a horrible hangover beer too.

Yep I had Stella recently and totally agree with the above twos comments - really overrated. That was its second and last chance with me :D I don't get how it gets on most restaurants boutique beer lists. Havn't had Baltika but saw it the other day at my bottle-o and plan on trying it - so will let you know when I do.

I detest the stuff. Had a couple of pints of it and struggled to finish both. Has a weird, passionfruit aftertaste.
Agreed, im a massive fan of Matilda Bay beers but this one has too much going on, heavy to the point of you cant have a meal with one and strange after taste.
Much prefer the Bohemian Pilsner or Rooftop Red from these makers.

I'm not a fan of Stella either, but don't agree with this. It has a very distinctive, sickly sweet taste.
exact reason im not a fan

for such a beer style give me Hieneken

I dont agree its a bad Hangover beer either, at least never has been for me

Oh I forgot to mention I tried a new beer the other day and it was a ripper.

If you're out on the Mornington Peninsula, the Red Hill Brewery is out there, I had a golden ale (they didnt have pale ) and it was beautiful. Helped that the place that served it, served it in frosted glass and had the beer near freezing so it was beautifully cold.

Just tried a matilda bay "ALPHA ALE," it had quite a nice (fruity, but not too much) taste, followed by a large hop kick right at the end. I'd recommend to try a couple.:thumbsu:

Red hill is a beautiful place, had lunch there, great views.

Didn't taste the beer though, but the wine was quite good.

Have only had Baltika #3 and #8, not #4. 8 is a wheat beer, quite good, but you can easily find better. #3 goes down pretty well, but again, money can be better spent elsewhere. Pint size bottles is handy.

For whoever was looking for Estrella, Dan Murphy's sells it. I hate the stuff personally, seem like a cheap European lager with a dirty taste. Spain isn't exactly known for beer though.

Peroni is fantastic for such a commercial beer, goes down brilliantly in the summer. And at $50 a slab, I regularly buy it during the warmer months.
