While AFL is a team sport I've always cheered for individual players along the way and have always had a favorite since I started supporting them. Here's my list from when I first started watching them...

1987 to 1989 - Laurie Keene - not sure why as I was only a kid - maybe because he was the biggest guy
1990 to 1997 - Suma - Kicked goals and as a kid that use to play full forward that was what I loved. The hook foot was awesome and he was from South Freo (the team i supported in the WAFL). Yes, even when he sucked I still wanted him playing.
1997 to 2001 - Peter Matera - Another South Freo guy - Would have been my second favorite for the years before, and got bumped up to number 1 when Suma retired. Such a flashy player.
2002 to 2006 - Ben Cousins - Never seen someone work so hard on a footy field
2006 to 2007 - Chris Judd - Some time in 2006 Judd took over. I don't think it was the fall of Ben, more the rise of how much I liked how Judd played footy.
2007 to 2009 - Black hole - Seriously struggled to pick a fav player. Possibly Kerr. Lost some interest in footy during this period.
2010 to present - Nic Nat - nuff said

-Peter matera. (can't remember too much earlier than him)
-Cousins. (still would probably be my all time favourite)
-Hurn ( still remember watching his first game thinking who is this guy? Why does he look about 40)
-NicNat ( the hype had worn off a bit over the years but when first drafted it was pretty exciting)
-Adamson/Waterman ( pretty excited about both of them. I admit I'm going a bit over the top with the likes of Corey there but I just love the look of him)

1993 to 2002 - Glen Jakovich was my first favourite Eagle. Wanted to be a CHB like him in junior footy but sadly for me never fitted the mould of a KPD.

2003 to 2007 - Bided my team between Ben Cousins initially and Chris Judd in later teens. Loved Cousin's gut running ability. Didn't see a player who worked as hard as him. As for Judd i loved his explosive play from the contest, our first Brownlow medalist than premiership captain also. Explosiveness from the contest is something I didn't notice as much from a West Coast player growing up.

2007 - 2014 it was Darren Glass. Just loved the way he captained the side and was rarely beaten.

2015 onwards is hard to pick at the moment but I've enjoyed watching the development of Mitch Brown over the years. Have been a supporter and keen follower of his progress when at WAFL level also. Has stayed loyal with the club during tougher times when he wasn't getting selected either.

Worsfold. Ultimate team player. Put himself through absolute hell on the training track and on the field in the name of the club. Went from being a big-bodied centreman to a seriously undersized defender and set a tone of commitment for three premierships. I would love to see someone of his ilk in the current 22.

1990 - Sumich.. my first year that I remember games, full forward
1991 - 1995 - Matera, wingman days - absolute star with pace and gathers
1996 - 1997 - Beginning to get older and realised that Kemp's exquisiteness was keeping the Eagles around the mark as other icons began to slow as the competition moved on
1998 - 2001 - Cuz, the champion mid/half-forward, already gutrunning with trademark hands on hips with anguished face and fringe-part haircut whenever the ball was stopped
2002 - 2007 - Judd was a star from game 1...even in the preseason of 02 realised this manchild had afterburners
2008 - 2011 - Since no Benny or CJ .. Kerr, injury-riddled but still had the genius handballs and spurts of miracle extraction.
2012 - current - the Panther, Nic Naitanui. Hope he gets back to '12 form and he's not just a lumbering patchwork of surgery.

Had the exact same order of favourite players except Beau Waters was a favourite from the start and filled in that black hole. I find Nicnat the most exciting to watch atm. Once a game he'll do something you've never seen before.

90-95: Tony Evans - Was young but i just like the way he moved.
96-00: Ben Cousins - Was nobody else to love during this time.
01-05: Daniel Kerr - Just his playing style.
06-10: Dean Cox - Champion in the post 06 era. LeCras gets close.
11-14: Luke Shuey - Want the ball in his hand all the time.

Jakovich/McNamara/Wirrapunda/Chick/Swift/Darling/Yeo/Sheed

Absolutely no linkage at all. Just sometimes I have a favourite player.

97-2001: Before this I was too young to remember much about anything, but Mum and Dad's favourites were Kemp, Jakovich and Matera, so by extension, they were my favourites too.
2001-2007: Cousins. Still my favourite player to this day. Everyone's already said it but his gut running, how hard he worked, and whenever we needed him he stood up. Judd a very close second, Banfield and Wirra up there too.
2008-2012: Lecras, Cox and Glass. Could not separate the three of them. Three shining lights in a pretty dark period pre-2011.
2012-today: Naitanui, Darling and Gaff.

My favourite player growing up was Peter Matera. Don't really have a stand out now, which hints at the fact that there is less individual brilliance than we used to have.

Regarding the missing u... I'm in the USA. I have a part time job writing for Americans, so I have had to change how I write.
