... and Septic crap at that. Has American television permeated Australian culture to the point where Seppo sitcoms are the be-all and end-all of comedy?

The programs listed above are all mindless pap. Were it not for the laugh track, the "humour" would pass right over one's head. Is the average Aussie's sense of humour impaired to the point where he/she has to be told when to laugh and what bits are funny?

That dreck pales in comparison to the classic British sitcoms: Fawlty Towers, the Goodies, Red Dwarf, Man About the House, 'Allo 'Allo, the Young Ones. Many would add stuff like AbFab and Bottom, though neither particularly appeals to me. Even Aussie-produced stuff like Kingswood Country (the king of Aussie sitcoms) and Kath & Kim rates better than the septic shyte.

The sole exception - the one decent sitcom to ever emerge from that unfunny country - is M*A*S*H. Even after the 47th repeat it still retains its humour. Most of today's Seppo sitcoms are not funny even on the first viewing.

Wow, calm down there. I only like seinfeld out of all of those, i agree the tv channels are putting all that other crap stuff on when they don't need to. I was just wondering if anyone actually liked them, that's all.

Welcome to the general board matey. Don't take criticisms personally, but if I think somethings crap then it has to be said. Doesn't mean I think you're crap.

Cultural snobs of the worst kind some of you blokes

Not mentioning any Glenelg supporters or Watermark bar staff.

Some of those shows are funny in my view.

What's not funny is the way that some people think they are sooooooo cool and smart because they don't watch american sitcoms.

Seinfeld
Just Shoot me

are my faves from the choices given.

It doesn't mean you can't like other stuff better boys.

Open your minds.

Out of that lot, Friends and Seinfeld. But I generally prefer the British to the American comedy shows.

Nah some British comedy is boring but some is great but American stuff is pretty funny!

I actually like the older episodes.
The newer epiosdes lose their appeal as the boys get older.

Talking of British sitcoms, this was in Variety On Line this week.

DeNiro and Pesci on board Scorsese's Bus

by Derek Edwards (New York)

With his Dean Martin bio-pic still facing budgetary and casting difficulties, director Martin Scorsese has signed on to move ahead with his long-cherished plans to bring hit British sitcom, On The Buses to the big screen. With shooting due to commence in late January, the director, with Goodfellas and Casino co-writer Nick Pileggi have a tight schedule to finish the script, which will transfer the storyline from London to 1970s New York.

In a major casting coup, (contingent on script approval) Robert DeNiro has signed on to star as Butler, bus driver for NY Metrolpolitan Transport. He will be reunited with his frequent co-star Joe pesci who has inked a deal to play his friend and union organiser, Jack. In the role of corrupt company inspector Blakey, Scorsese had hoped to entice Dennis Hopper, but with that thesp's obligations to his Sinatra pic skedded to shoot in Sydney early next year, Christopher Walken has grabbed the role.

Rounding out the cast will be Anne Bancroft as DeNiro's mother, Melanie Griffith as his sister and, as her slacker husband, Mickey Rourke in what could be a career-rescuing role.

Scorsese told Daily Variety that the film will be quite different from the well-remembered TV series (currently in re-run on PBS).

"It is the set-up and interaction between the characters that interested me, not the humour" the thrice Oscar-nominated helmer said.

"So this is pure drama of government corruption within the public transport industry and how it affects and divides one family".

With a North American distribution deal from Warner and international and ancillary rights being picked up by UIP, On The Buses appears to be on course for having its $80 million budget greenlit and on track for a December release in line for Oscar contention.

Of those, umm .. err ... Friends is ok.

Prefer Newhart or Nightcourt, but worldwide I like Blackadder, Yes Minister, Young Ones, Goodies, Brittas Empire, Fawlty Towers.

jars' comment is amusing : "What's not funny is the way that some people think they are sooooooo cool and smart because they don't watch american sitcoms."

Surely its because they're not the full quid. More and more TV is now aimed at the LCD, and *shrug* if it makes them money then why would they do any different? As I have already shown, there's a couple of seppo sitcoms which are very good, but many of the ones on these days are little more than dribble.

I like them as well, but after last summer when it was on every night? I can't believe Channel nine owns four or five seasons and has only played majority of the first. Suppose Ten does the same with the Simpsons.

Yes, yes and more yesses.

A forgotten classic from my childhood that used to be on Friday nights after the old man had played squash.

Caught it on Foxtel, brilliant, they don't make em like that anymore.

Hokey Cokey proffesory

Saw some of Mind your Language again when I was in England. Pure Gold.

"sss'allright"

Another really good one that didn't last long was called "Dear John" about divorced people at a self-help group. Brilliant stuff.
