If you're close enough to the North Shore, Balgowlah Porters had about 10 cases on a floor display about a week ago. So would assume they still have plenty

I have a St-Ambroise Citrouille Pumpkin Ale in my fridge. Canadian. Bit skeptical of spiced/vegetable/fruit beers.

I haven't had that particular one but I've had a few of the spiced varieties in the past few months. They release them here around Christmas. Some of them are pretty tasty but not really sessional beers. They are nice on a cold Canadian winters day but I don't think they'd suit an Aussie summer.

Wish I had a t shirt of the label!

Purvis Beer Richmond opened up around the corner from me about 6 months ago, so I have enjoys a few samples. Might ease my way through as many Top 50 Ratebeer beers as I can!

Love the Belgian triples, with Rochefort 10 being my favourite thus far.

Of the locals, I like the Pales of Hargreaves Hill, Little Creatures and recently Hawthorn Brewing.

I usually drink my own homebrew but when I feel like a shop beer I still reckon that Shipstone Amber Ale they sell at ALDI is one of the best drops.

To me it tastes as good as most Belgian Beers and it's only $30 a slab!

Little Creature is a good one Fig. Have you tried Mildura Wheat Beer? Had a few at that Nepalese restaurant on bridge road a while back. Bloody nice.None of my locals seem to stock it though.

Anyone have some top notch Aussie beers I ought to try when I make it back to Melbourne later this year? When I left, seven years ago, the micro brewing trend seemed to be only just in the beginning stages so I'd never got a chance to try anything interesting. Also, I hated beer at that point...Oh, the shame!

the locals figjam mentioned are all good especially Hawthorn and Little Creatures.

James Squire is also good.

Mirrors my story, with changes to the timeline.

When I hit drinking age (a grey area) , it was VB or Tooheys and the "exotic beers" were Hahn Ice and Carlton Cold. It's no wonder I opted out of beer at that stage. Went o/s a few times, tried brews made overseas, and when I got back, Squires and some of the other medium sized breweries were on the scene. Thank goodness.

Speaking of the mid 90's, did anyone try that "Duff" branded beer that was sued out of existence in 1995-96. I had some on a New Years Eve around that time down at the Paragon in Circular Quay. Possibly the worst beer I've ever had in my life. Tasted like a 3 year old West End would. I also recall that unopened cans/slabs were going for some insane price due to their rarity.

Little Creatures Pale is the obvious one. Alpha Pale Ale and its little bro Fat Yak from Matilda Bay are also quality.

Long Shot is an interesting release from Matilda Bay too, branded as a coffee stout (with real coffee), though is maybe more like a porter. Worth a try in any case.

Moo Brew pale ale is great quality.

Boatrocker Alpha Queen pale ale, if you ignore the label which says that it's massively hopped (it's not at all), makes for a worthy sessionable pale ale, on the lighter side.

Barons Black Wattle is a favourite of mine.

Grand Ridge Moonshine Scotch ale is another favourite.

IPAs OK then? Australias best are IPAs.

Feral Hop Hog
Murrays Icon 2IPA
Jamieson 'The Beast' IPA

Straight APAs

Alpha Pale Ale is superb. I rate it higer than LCPA.
Murrays Nirvana Pale Ale
Stone & Wood Pacific

If you want some more styles, Porters, Stouts, English style ales, Lagers/Pilsners, I will happily oblige

That's good then, because IPAs are probably my favourite style.

How many of these am I likely to find on tap at a good pub or beer garden?

Will you be in Melbourne?

If yes, then you are in luck. They have 2 great spots for Craft beer. Beer Deluxe and Biero. Biero is supposed to be better. They mostly have imported beers, but you will find the good Matilda Bays, Murrays, stuff like that.

Local Taphouse in St Kilda is the best for beer in Melbourne.

They have 20 taps and last time I was there (around 4 weeks back), they had Feral Hop Hog on tap. Was sensational.

You should check out Biero then. I hear it's better.

Melbourne mainly, though I will also be in Sydney for a few days.

Will keep these places in mind. Cheers :)

Had two outstanding brews tonite.

My first Hop Hog in some time, and it didn't disappoint (like LCPA and Fat Yak did after a long lay off). Still my favourite Australian IPA, and definitely in the Top 5 Beers Australia produces.

My other is from Flying Dog brewery from the US East Coast. The Double Dog Pale Ale. A Double IPA. Huge flavour. Not a typical DIPA.

I'm having a Coopers Best Extra Stout! It has taken over from Guinness as my winter staple (cold day in Melbourne today). It is not as creamy but tastier and stronger. And pretty creamy I guess once it warms up. Anyone else like this delicious brew?

Speaking of beer temps, should stout be kept in the fridge or straight from the pantry because I seem to leave it out for 30-60 mins before I drink it to let it warm up first.
