Far too little activity in this thread.

Anyway, Pirate Life Pale Ale is an absolute ripper. Just took home a swag of medals at the Perth Beer Show, despite being a South Australian brewery.

Give it a crack if you come across it, comes in a distinctive black can.

Fellas I've got a question. I've got a good mates party tomorrow night and being a young lad I'm not too experienced with beer. Was wondering Carlton Draught or Carlton Dry? (Stubbies)

Cheers,

Cheers,

If you want to be trendy, or are more concerned about the way you look, Carlton Dry.
For marginally better taste, Carlton Draught.

But why are you insisting on Carlton products? There is much much better beer available for not much more money?

Cans a trendy. Find a good IPA and experience the lupulin threshold shift. You won't look back.

You're right, tall cans are the thing right now. Which begs to ask the question, what do you think about cans? A lot of bad lagers from years past have made it difficult for me to accept them. All the worst beers I have consumed were out of cans. I have been drinking a few American beers recently that have been canned, and the can seems to have no effect on the taste, whereas with cheaper beers, the bottle is always a better option because there seems to be a slightly differing taste going on. It's weird.

Personally I prefer to drink a beer poured into a glass from an aromatic perspective. Most people like drinking out of glass bottles. I don't know why.

Look for the hops.

South Australia has some outstanding breweries these days. Not sure how many of these you'll find in other states, but some of my faves, in no particular order are:

Prancing Pony Amber Ale
Prancing Pony Dark
Lobethal Bierhaus Red Truck Porter
Lobethal Bierhaus India Pale Al (spelling of Al is intentional...it's the brewer's name)
Lobethal Bierhaus Bruce (mid strength English style bitter....fantastic)
Pirate Life DIPA
Pirate Life Throwback IPA (a mid strength 'session IPA)
Vale IPA
Barossa Brewing Stout (can't remember the fancy name for it, but it's a beauty).

Outside of SA, like many others, I'm a big fan of Little Creatures IPA (and their Pale Ale!), And a little brewery in Healesville called Buckley's that do a fantastic Bock. Mountain Goat do some great beers, including their Summer Ale (I think that's what it's called?).
Sierra Nevada Pale & Torpedo IPA would be my favourite of the imported varieties, but I still enjoy both Guiness & Killenny from time to time.

All that said, I'm not a full blown beer snob...my fridge is packed with Cooper's Pale Ale most of the time and that keeps me quite happy!

Well I've certainly jumped on the craft beer bandwagon. Barely drank much beer up until 2 years ago. Now I'm a mad home brewer with four beers on tap. I put it down to the complete saturation of the beer market with boring tasteless lager. For decades that's all you could find. Even the best commercial lagers like Asahi, Boags, Stella etc have quite a lot of sweetness it's almost like drinking a soft drink.

If your in this pattern grab yourself a pale ale. It's aromatic, interesting and refreshing. I'm making better beers than I can buy and loving it!

Currently have Munich Dunkel, Smoked Porter, Blonde Ale & Mulberry Saison on tap. image.jpg

Ah! Good to see that we share a beer brain, WH.

Tried the Red Truck Porter not so long ago & it's very nice. Prancing Pony also got a bit of a run a while ago.

The Porter is very much a winter beer, which works wonders up here in the Hills through the colder months. Prob why I like the Pony's Dark ale so much as well!

Hawkinspired - very impressive kegerator set up! Nice work man...clearly it's your shout!

It's quite ridiculous when it's full it's the equivalent of ten cases of beer!

I would have thought that the events of the past week would have resulted in a bump of this thread.

Anyway, here are two great new beers from the west to look out for:

Cheeky Monkey Hop Flinger West Coast IPA
Gage Roads Little Dove

They won't take the Mitch pain away but they'll help lol

I'm looking forward to coming to Aus in a few months to try a few of the above.

My beer of choice at the moment is Chimay Triple Blond (white label). It a 6 pack here is only €8-9. Probably that per bottle in Aus. Worth a try though if your up for something Belgian.

There is a great little Pale called Vale Ale. Reasonable price and available at uncle Dan's. Its my go to.

That is a nice, easy drinking beer. The same mob do an IPA that's very nice as well. You'd be shocked to learn it's called "Vale IPA".

SA does have some excellent brewers/beers. My very favourite beer is one made by Brewboys - their IPA Hoppapotamus is outstanding but almost impossible to get outside of Adelaide. Each summer I get two cartons delivered to Melbourne.

Yep, Hoppopotamus is a beauty. Big beer - around the 7% mark, if memory serves.

Sure is, it's almost approaching double IPA territory. Drinking these a few days after they've been bottled is a highlight of the summer me.

Southwark Old Stout.

Yum.
It's a beauty and, as Woodside Hawk said, sadly underrated.

Coopers Stout is heavily marketed though & Southwark does suffer by (trendy) comparison. If you ever find it on tap, it is absolutely worth it.
