I'm going to show my age ... big time.

When it comes to 'toons you can't beat the old Warner Brothers characters from the old Bugs Bunny Show.

One of my favourites was "Duck Dodgers in the 25th and a half Century", starring Daffy Duck as Duck Dodgers and Porky Pig as the Eager Young Space Cadet.

They encounter a Martian on Planet X. A terrible war is fought for control of the planet. In the final scene the planet is blown to smithereens. And there they are ... in the middle of outer space ... clinging to what is left of Planet X.

Then Duck Dodgers says triumphantly, "I claim this planet in the name of Earth". To which the Eager Young Space Cadet replies, "B-b-b-b-b-big deal."

Amazing stuff ... especially when you consider that these cartoons were made in America at the height of the Cold War. It's a wonder they weren't banned for being subversive.

Daffy Duck and Porky Pig were a great team. I also loved Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester, Wile E. Coyote and, of course, the Oscar-winning rabbit himself.

There were also characters I absolutely loathed, like Tweety and the Road-Runner. I always wanted them to get caught but they never did.

Mel Blanc did the voices. He was an absolute bloody genius.

I must have seen most of these cartoons dozens of times over the years. And they still crack me up every time.

Ah, they don't make cartoons like that any more.

**th-th-th-th-th-that's all, folks**

What a great thread, i love it

Alf, you have good taste. Did you ever see any of the Tex Avery 'Droopys'? Sheer unadultarated mayhem. I think you would love them.

Many more from that time are all forgotten now, shame really as alot of it stands up very well for the anime tequniches they used for the time.

Astro Boy!! Come to my arms
bolletje.gif

Gigantor,Prince Planet,Marine Boy,
Racer X,Kimaba the white lion (the Real Lion King!)Robotech,Speed Racer,Lum,Ranma1/2.

I LOVE THAT STUFF.
biggthumpup.gif

All the early (AstroBoy,Gigantor, etc) were created by a buy called Tezuka Osamu, the Japanese 'Disney'. Theres a huge market for origional toys, cells and memorabillia for that stuff.

Wacky Races, hmm got me thinking who i can remember,
00 The Mean Machine, Dastardly and Muttley
01 The Bouldermobile, The Slag Brothers
02 The Creepy Coupe, The Gruesome Twosome
03 Convert-A-Car, Professor Pat Pending
04 The Crimson Haybailer, The Red Max
05 The Pink Compact, Penelope Pitstop
06 The Army Surplus, Special Meekley and Sarge
07 The Bullet Proof Bomb, The Ant Hill Mob
08 Arkansas Chug-a-Bug, Luke and Blubber Bear
09 The Turbo Terrific, Peter Perfect
10 The Buzzwagon Rufus, Ruffcut and Sawtooth

hehe i did cheat and take it from a very cool site at http://www.dfcom.freeserve.co.uk/hbw/
frame.htm that and http://www.80snostalgia.com/classictv/
wackyraces/ (hey im obsessed, what can i say)
if your into Hanna/Barbera cartoons and it seems some of you are then check it out for a good dose of nostalgia.

Lets see others that i loved were, DangerMouse,Funky Phantom,Space Ghost,Milton the Monster (looks kinda like Barry Hall lol) Groovy Ghoulies,Scooby but they killed it when they brought in Scrappy,InchHigh private Eye,Magilla Gorilla,SpiderMan *remember the song spiderman spiderman, friendly neighbourhood spiderman* the Marvel shorts of Thor,Hulk,Iron Man,Captain America, many many more.

From more recent times, Simpsons of course, but also the first series of Ren & Stimpy are priceless, Space Madness being the best.

Also Duckman (what brilliant casting of Jason Alexander) is fantastic.

But for all time fav, its gotta by Droopy. Bub.

Cheers

Alf,

Saw a great interview with Chuck Jones who produced many of the CLASSIC Waner Bros cartoons .. and his favourite was the Wyle E. Coyote one about the Earthquake Pills. I have a weakness for Yosamite Sam's keenness to see Fearless Freep's High Diving act, and his attempt to recruit a crew for the Bunny.

His line on the subversive nature of his characters, compared with the Un-American Affairs committee, was that he was too small fry to be asked, but in retrospect he should have been !

Jsut when you think the Americans have no humour, along come Troy McLure. Now why wasn't he doing some Olympic intros ?

Other than the obvious, there was an obscure cartoon on in the Sixties called King Leonardo, set in the delightful Bongo Congo. It was pretty silly. It was on before Clutch Cargo ( not forgetting Spinner and Paddlefoot ).

Nowadays the kids are watching Cow and Chicken, I am Weasel and Sheep in the City - all silly as.

Fav character has to be Homer.

Alf. I can't believe you have only seen the Warner Bros cartoons dozens of times. I recon I've seen em 100's of times. Hate Speedy Gonzalas though. They are the greatest cartoons of all time.

So someone else remembers Gigantor. How did he control that thing with a toaster with 2 sticks coming out the top.

You have to luv Clutch Cargo. Only the mouths moving.

And talking about old shows, does anybody remember Jet Jackson. What a hoot. Rabid anti commie hero, Egghead scientist with lab coat & glasses & short fat stupid comedy relief sidekick who I think was called Eggy.

You're probably right, Drakey. It must be 100s of times.

And yeah, I hated Speedy Gonzales too. I put him in the same category as Tweety and the Road Runner.

Maybe I just identify with losers. Read into that whatever you will.

Warner Brothers have made a few attempts over the years to revive some of those old characters but they've never succeeded in recapturing the vibe of those halcyon days in the 40s and 50s when all those real classics were made.

**floreat pica**

Now that I think of it - SuperTed was pretty stupid ( Mervyn Hayes as a screaming Queen Skeleton ), and DangerMouse with John Howard as his assistant Penfold.

A couple of Warner Bros lines that became quotes in our family

'Oh Father, the SHAME' - Bell the Mouse episode with Sylvester and son.

'I should'a turned left at Alberqerque'

'When I say woah, I mean WOAH!"

ALF, right on the money with the WB cartoons. Just as funny and clever today as the day they were drawn.

Grendel, good work and I agree with all the other cartoons you mentioned they were all fantastic. Gunna check out the sites for more info.

Cheers.
