There was a place that did a mean Szechuan chicken when I was a kid. Nothing has matched up to it since.

Sweet and sour breaded pork chop with fried rice. Not the usual sweet and sour pork balls. Used to be quite popular at food courts back in the 80s/90s.

I like Szechuan beef/chicken too along with the sweet and sour pork and the classic lemon chicken or chicken with cashew nuts.

I got a rude shock when a Chinese girl I worked with took me to a proper Chinese restaurant that didn't serve any of those dishes

It was dishes like boiled chicken feet, a goat's anus and fried dog's testicles, I felt like yelling "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here'

I didn't want to offend her though, I just said I'm not all that hungry, I had a big breakfast.

Authentic doesn't always mean better. I think if the quality of the meat is good then the dish is likely to be enjoyable.

Dim Sum is the god tier food experience.

I'll judge Chinese restaurants on their fried (or even steamed) rice though - if they can't manage that they're not worth bothering with.

Still searching for a good Char Siew BBQ Pork in Perth after the Chinese BBQ place at the International Eating House in Vic Park shut up shop. Was devastated when that place closed
