Most punters have a favourite type of race - for me I love the 3YO fillies races in town, normally Wednesday or Friday night often you can see a group of nice horses who are on the up, have come from the country tracks and possibly will go on to win better races.

Some punters prefer maidens or staying races, and some punters won't go near mares.

What sort of races do you leave alone whe studying the form, and do you have a preference for any?

I don't mind maidens.

If I'm betting on a maiden, I usually bet on the best performed horse that's had a race start. Sometimes you can get nice odds because a first starter won it's trial by 6 lengths, but they've never been to the races and they play up or run badly.

I'm loving betting on maidens right now. Especially 1400/1600/2000 races so it's not as likely to be a crapshoot sprint race.

You can find horses that are going to be better than maiden class and are confident that it will break through next start. Then follow the form around that winner (ie the horse that runs second get on at its next start.)

These horses usually have 5 starts or fewer, don't worry really about horses that havent won in 10+ starts because then you begin to wonder about them.

Example would be horse A has big wraps on it and is having its debut or 2nd race in maiden class and is odds-on. Assume it wins. Horses that run 2nd and 3rd run nice races and you can safely back them at their next starts as you know they'll break their duck soon. Repeat the process at next race, follow the 2nd or 3rd horse.

Of course these horses are short odds, but seems to be going ok for me lately.

I'm always happy to back a horse in a maiden that is having its second start that failed first up and started under $10.00. The prices of some of them make them worth following. There's usually one or two of them at the Saturday provincial meetings in Victoria.
