Who's your favourite Director and why?

Also, what is your favourite of their movies?

Note: Polls can only hold 16 options, and there are stacks of worthies who I didn't include. You may have included others before these.

For me it's H I T C H C O C K all the way baby.

Absolute master of framing, angles, pre-CG special effects, plot, suspense, and also a master of surrounding himself with some of the true greats of film, in composers, screenwriters, actors, etc.

Favourite all time Hitch**** Movie: NORTH by NORTHWEST.
If you haven't seen it, grab a DVD of the restoration and do yourself a favour. Best ride since (and including) Raiders of the Lost Ark (actually that's a poor comparison, but it'll do for now).

A legend.
Deserves to be mentioned for 'Fight Club' on it's own.

No doubt Spielberg!

Just look at some of the absolute classics he has directed.

Schindlers List - a masterpeice.

Catch Me If You Can - loved this movie.

AI - a lot of people didnt like it but I thought it was great. HJO is a hell of an actor.

Saving Private Ryan - first half an hour is perhaps the closest I will ever get to WWII, Spielberg blew me away!

Jurassic Park - a masterpiece. The sequels were just action/dinosaur movies, but the first was a classic!

Amistad - a lot of people havent seen this...I recommend that they do.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - a masterpiece.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom - a masterpiece.
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark - a masterpeice.

Empire of the Sun - a masterpiece....love this movie.

E.T. - a masterpiece.

Jaws - a masterpiece.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - a classic, Dreyfuss was fantastic!

And many more like 1941, Poltergiest, The Colour Purple, Hook, Always, Minority Report. The guy is a genius.

Steven Spielberg cant be beat IMO.

My Favourite Directors are (in Order):

Kryzsztof Kieslowski (Three Colours Trilogy, Decalog, The Double Life of Veronique)
G. W. Pabst (Pandora's Box, Diary of a Lost Girl)
Luis Bunuel (Belle De Jour, Tristana, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgouise)
Sergio Leone (Once Upon a Time in the West, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly)
Alfred Hitch**** (Rear Window, To Catch a Thief)
Jean Rollin (Fascination, The Living Dead Girl, Lips of Blood)
Jess Franco (The Female Vampire, Exorcism, Vampyres Lesbos)

I cannot think of one American Director that is as consistant as these European Masters.

I am unaware if Donald has directed or not, but going on Kiefer's one effort, Truth or Consequence NM I would have to say his directorial talent could easily fit up the left nostril of a small, sinus-afflicted gnat.

With room to spare.

My choices, for what it is worth and in no particular order...

Michael Powell
Werner Herzog
Luis Bunuel
Mario Bava
Jean Pierre Melville
Anthony Mann
Joseph Losey
Luchino Visconti
Billy Wilder
Sam Peckinpah

...and that will do. I'll be here all day, otherwise

Nice call on Rollin and Franco, DEVO. I have books signed by both of those gents and a number of posters of their films.

Even have a sexy nude piece signed by Lina Romay who, in her day, was the sexiest woman in film.

Also the sleaziest, but that is part of her charm ;)

Nonsense.

The auteur responsible for that masterpiece Hard Rain is directing Salem's Lot.

Donald Sutherland is only acting in the mini-series.

It's good to see a lot of variation in the responses.

Also note that masters such as Sergio Leone, Sam Peckinpah, Billy Wilder, Kryzsztof Kieslowski etc were also in my mind, but like I said, you can only fit so many. Why the hell did I include Clint Eastwood? I guess I was a bit rushed :)

Please try to say why you like your favourite - that was one of the main reasons I put the thread up.

No he's not. He is directing and producing the mini-series. He gave up acting years ago.

Yeah, it was good get. I've got a video of a show where they interview those two greats as well showing excerpts from their films. Followed up with Romay in The female vampire. Taped off Channel 4, UK a few years ago.

Unfortunately Lina is still doing the same act in recent years, in such films as Tender Flesh. She's packed on the pounds, must be close to 60 and is almost bald. Her lesbian scenes in that film were a little hard to take.

But I'll give the gal credit for not growing old gracefully!
