Sh** year for movies.

Dont think ive seen any great non hollywood flicsk this year.

Of the hollywood flicks only one stamds out and thats Infinity War. I usualg hate comic book movies but this was great. Probably in the top 3 all time comic book movies along with watchman and the dark knight.

More of a music and reading year for mine.

Only been to the cinema twice since Oscar season, took the year off from festivals. Phantom Thread (and The Death of Stalin) is 2017 to me (recently replaced CMBYN as my 2017 #1, another PTA masterpiece).

From those dozen I've seen thus far, the only decent ones:
Widows (brilliant adaptation of the mid-80s mini-series, new Steve McQueen) 8.5/10
Breath 8/10
Hereditary 7.5/10
Love, Simon 7.5/10

Probably won't see 20-30ish films from this year until mid next year, so an evaluation is a long way off.

I thought about this I don't think I could name a single film.
I didn't go to the cinemas at all, and there was no film I wished to see.
2018 is probably the worst year for films. Ever.

Maybe a bit of a down year, and there's still some I want to catch up with, but a preliminary top 10 so far.

Phantom Thread - PTA is in the groove, his last five films are all arguably the best thing that happened in their respective years. I had to see this a second time though to be really won over but it's so impeccably crafted, nothing really came close this year.

A Star is Born - had super low expectations but Bradley Cooper turns out to be a fairly astute director and between his performance and Lady Gaga's singing voice this turned out to be something I really latched onto. Great songs, great performance, good old fashioned studio romance.

Climax - saw this twice at MIFF. Ryan Murphy's TV show this year Pose may have been more straight up about ball culture but Climax was a more transportive experience that made you feel like you at one... then it becomes a straight up drug trip horror film that's as stupid as it is intoxicating. It reminded me a lot of Possession but just the subway scene of Isabelle Adjani screaming for a half n hour. I am also a sucker for dance scenes and the opening number is killer.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - another movie like Phantom Thread that's from a filmmaker - or filmmakers - who know precisely what they're doing and what they want to have on screen at every moment. Delightful as it was disturbing.

Support the Girls - I don't think I've seen a movie about what it's like to have a boss that cares - or in this case, a manager. Someone doing the best they can to manage the strict demands of upper management while making the actual work environment for the employees somewhat tolerable. Just the most empathetic thing I saw all year.

Dragged Across Concrete - saw it at Monster Fest two weeks ago. From the director of Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99. He's honed his craft to its utter peak with this one. It's not as gory and it puts the slow in slow burn but again I am won over by any movie that feels like it was made by someone who knew what they wanted and this was that. It's like if the David Lynch made a straight down the line crime film/cop stakeout movie, a lot if it reminded me of Twin Peaks the Return in terms of presentation. Also, turns out, I just like Mel Gibson - even in a meta role that's a borderline attempt to excuse him of him of his real life assholery, he's just the definition of grizzled no-nonsense arsehole, like Riggs, his Lethal Weapon character, aged appropriately after 25 years.

The House That Jack Built - also seen at Monster Fest. Not nearly as shocking as all the hype lead me to believe. Not to say it isn't grotesque but I feel like I've seen enough shows on serial killers not to be offended. Matt Dillon is just amazing, his best performance since There's Something About Mary. He's unnerving and disarming at the same time. Really fell for this because of the dark humour though. It's not humours throughout but there are a few moments that go above any comedy I saw this year.

Leave No Trace - like Support the Girls, one of the most tender movies I saw this year. Reminded me a little of Kelly Reichardt Wendy & Lucy but less miserable and more hopeful, as well as The Florida Project. Thomasin McKenzie gives one my favourite performance of the year. You can tell everything she's feeling from her face alone. Maybe the closest thing to what a The Last of Us movie should be (minus the zombies).

Mission Impossible: Fallout - Tom Cruise doing unreal Tom Cruise things while fighting Henry Cavill with a pornstache. Speaks for itself.

First Man - thought this was gonna wind up a lesser version of The Right Stuff but ended surprised that Chazelle made a sly Tree of Life movie where he balances the gravitas of primitive spaceflight with the home life of a stoic astronaut. Like he made a movie out of Elton John's Rocket Man.


Also just 10 other movies I liked;

You Were Never Really Here, Zama, The Other Side of the Wind, Widows, Transit, Unfriended 2, Unsane, Ash is Purest White, Set It Up, 15:17 to Paris.


And a top 5 most overrated movies;

Hereditary, Mandy, Annihilation, Roma, Blackkklansman.

That was my reaction as well, 2nd (and 3rd) viewings were glorious. His last five new millennium films are my respective films of the year, which is an incredible feat.

I really liked Crazy Rich Asians.

A Quiet Place and Halloween were good horror flicks. I have somehow avoided Hereditary but from what I've heard it is excellent.

The less said about Fallen Kingdom the better.

Avengers 3 - I really liked, maybe my favourite marvel movie yet.

MI: Fallout - was pretty good too, great climax.

Black Panther - was ok, a little overrated but not bad.

Three Billboards someone mentioned might have been 2017 but that was very good.

Terrible year for film. Just about everything was over rated.
The only film that stayed with me was 'Hereditary' and half way through that I was
thinking it was over rated. The ending was very strong.

Best: Hereditary
Most over rated: Black Panther/Three Billboards..../Sicario;Day of the Soldado /BlacKKKlansman
Unexpectedly Good: Avengers;Infinity War
Want To See; Dragged Across Concrete (Brawl In Cell Block 99 was top notch)

Best Film Ever; Eraserhead (changed the way I view art)

Too much to catch up on to give any sort of list yet, but I can't see any of them being better than that one.
