Favourite Geelong Games?

I have an odd one I put on this list.. the 2009 blockbuster of the titans between geelong and st kilda.

Even tho we lost due to gardener giving Blake a bath and taking a contested mark in the goal square…

We got jumped, it was an arm wrestle.. then we went bizerk in the last and narrowed a 4 goal margin to scores level.

It is the only time in history two sides have gone undefeated to that point and played off.

I recall leaving that game with confidence saying “ we have their measure” which turned out to be true in the GF.

Looking back on that game in hindsight now knowing the GF result that followed, I couldn’t have scripted it better.
Exactly the same. Favourite game to have attended, I thought Telstra Dome or whatever it was called was going to collapse.
Whilst disappointed to leave, I left feeling privileged to be there and also that when we met again we wouldn't start giving 5 goals up.
I thought Sam Gilbert was going to be a star after that game, he was carving things up from the back line.
It's always my answer to this question.

With the players you had out the fact you only lost by a goal left me very confident you'd win the flag.

I would probably feel different if we had of lost the GF, but in hindsight I couldn’t have written a better script. I have watched that last qtr a few times now on replay

Long time ago , Round 20 1972 v Collingwood at KP , and what you have to factor in , is going into the game Coll were 3rd on ladder and Geel 10th in a 12 team comp

Geel 2.2 5.2 10.6 17.10

Coll 7.0 13.3 15.7 17.9

Only time Cats were in front was a point kicked by Newlands ( set shot free kick ) after the final siren .

2010 Easter Monday vs Hawks was a good one. Trailed but came back and won. Also the 2013 2nd meeting between the hawks. Led by 5 goals in the last qtr, gave up the lead by 9 or 10 points before overrunning them again.

Qualifying final vs the saints in 2010 was a good game. You guys were robbed at a chance to win it.

20/6/1981
Geelong v NM Kardinia Park
The Brian Peake game
170 v 56
Rod Blake 7 goals
Turner 3 goals
We looked invincible
Was standing watching in awe of this team and we all thought Geelong was finally GF worthy- alas, not to be.
The first game I recall us looking so complete.
MANY games since we actually have monstered teams, and been the real deal, but that for me was the beginning after a long period of lethargy.

1989 VFL Preliminary Final. We really were the best team that year and, in all honesty, the most electrifying highlight-reel team I have ever seen of any era and any team.

Just on that - in the Qualifying Final they torched us 24.13 (157) to 11.15 (81), yet just weeks later we absolutely tore them apart 24.20 (164) to 10.10 (70). Was there any significant reason for this? First week nerves?

No, not nerves. I was at all of the finals except the GF where I declined a free seat and free beer.

We simply played the first final like it was a H&A game.
It changed up the following week and then changed up again. We were everywhere in that prelim.

The best thing about that prelim was that we were seated under the video screen.
Cats kicking to the other end.

The ball bounces through the middle, Ablett gets it and he's got a bombers player on his tail.
But there's also a bombers player coming up to him.

Ablett baulks left. (and remember that we are watching this from directly behind)
Then he moved right. Both bombers players hit each other front on and Gazza dobbed it from 45.

It was so great.

Great description. Feel like I was there!!!

Crikey! Is there a story here?
Only real story is that I'd never seen Geelong in a GF and I wanted to be with my mates that day.

I was in the army then. Just needed to go on the ground prematch. Then it was lower level seating on the flank in the olympic stand.

Rubbish bins full of beer and ice topped up.
I still have a mate who did it.

But I was in grovedale screaming at a TV.

I can respect that. Free beer but no mates versus paid beers but mates. Not even a contest, is it?

Lol, I too was in Grovedale that day, not enjoying a GF party. Have essentially avoided Grovedale ever since.
I have one last trip to do down that way. Lethbridge next week. And I dont expect that I'll ever go back.
But I do miss torquay back beach. I like that place.

I've divided this up into two sections, home and away and finals, with a top 10 for each:

Home and Away (chronological)
  1. 1987 v Fitzroy. Hard to imagine now, but our score of 29.10.184 was our then record score. Turner and Lindner kicked 7 and Brownless 6.
  2. 1987 v Sydney. The game when we came from 5 goals down in the last quarter at the SCG. Lindner played the most influential 7 possession game in history.
  3. 1989 v St.Kilda. The week after we blew the 56 point lead against Hawthorn. Battered St.Kilda by 119 points, and kicked our then record score (35.18.228) and the then all time record three quarter time score (27.12). Lockett kicked 6 in a losing cause.
  4. 1989 v Richmond. Watching Ablett almost effortlessly kick 14 goals live was something indescribable.
  5. 1989 v Collingwood. The week after the 14 goal haul. Great game and we pulled away in the last quarter with Ablett unstoppable.
  6. 1991 v St.Kilda. Great away win at Moorabbin.
  7. 1993 v West Coast. The last game in Perth, where Blight stood on the table in the race. Great come from behind win.
  8. 1999 v North Melbourne. Fantastic game that others have mentioned. Came from 40 points down.
  9. 2007 v Footscray. The return match late in the year when we smacked them and proved to this Geelong fan we actually were capable of going all the way.
  10. 2008 v Sydney. The game when Gary junior went berserk in the last quarter.

Finals (favourite)
  1. 2007 Grand final. No contest. Nothing comes close.
  2. 2007 Qualifying final. Absolute delight to beat North by over 100 points.
  3. 1989 Preliminary final. The Ablett senior masterclass.
  4. 1989 First semi-final. Nearly as good as the Prelim from Ablett.
  5. 2009 Grand final. Tight tough game. Amazing win.
  6. 2011 Qualifying final. So good to knock off Hawthorn comprehensively in a final.
  7. 1991 Elimination final. Great game against St.Kilda. Lockett 9 and Brownless 8.
  8. 2011 Grand final. Awesome win to see Hawkins click.
  9. 2022 Grand final. Feet up from start to finish. No better way to win a Grand final.
  10. 2009 Qualifying final. Great to remind the Dogs we actually weren't pushovers that year.

They opened with a seven goal quarter and we closed with one!

Yep. Sure was.
Was at the game. Apart from the game itself, my main memory was taking a couple of students from Sweden I think to watch the game.

As we settled in to our spots they became a bit perturbed to see that both Navy and Royal blue colours were all sitting in the same area.

Had to explain that it was normal and there'd be no trouble. To this day I still think mixing the fans is actually an antidote to bad behaviour.

Some clubs in other sporting codes have a long, violent and sectarian history together. Glasgow's two teams Rangers (Protestant) and Celtic (Catholic) would likely only share a merry bloodbath together if you put them in the same stadium enclosure.
