st andrews beach gc. nice open fairways but challenging enough to keep you honest. elevated tees but a good walk between holes. well maintained (proably considering it was closed recently).

unfortunately signage isnt the greatest and the clubhouse is a glorified shipping container.

A lot of people confusing good condition and/or course difficulty with good design here.

RM West, Kingston Heath and Barnbougle the clear top three for me.

The two most overrated courses in Australia are Metropolitan (where are the great holes?) and Royal Canberra. The latter would not make my top 40 in the country.

Favorite Courses I have played:
Dunes, Moonah Links (Open and Legends), Portsea, Victoria, Woodlands, Santuary Lakes, Cape Schanck, Southern, Peninsula, Kingswood, Keysborough....Royal Moorabbin ;) (Did have four under on the front nine the last time I saddled up around there)

Courses I am playing over the next few months:
Barnbougle Dunes, The Sands, Huntingdale, Settlers Run, Eynesbury, Sandhurst, St Andrews Beach.

A few mates played Shadow Creek in Vegas mid year on a Bucks week.......unbelievable. $500A a round though.

16th at Metro is a great hole. Excellent dog leg right par 4 with plenty of options and a tough green as well.

I think the the 13th, par 3 is also a great hole. Requires a great tee shot to hit the green.

Guess it all comes down to experience and preference.

My favourites in no particular order;

Kingston Heath
Woodlands
Murray Downs
Barwon Heads (great test of course management)
Northern
Southern
Commonwealth
Cranbourne
Rich River (old)

my fave is The National (Ocean) - a bit "easier" than the other two courses there.

however best score ever of 100 happened at Ringwood (Royal) a few weeks ago, so that will hold a special place in my heart

The prefix Royal is reserved for Royal Keilor I'm afraid brother. I didn't know you were a fellow golfer.

Look I'm not saying there's not good golf to be had at Metro but compared to the likes of RMW, Kingston Heath, Commonwealth and Woodlands for example the hole quality really falls short.

Those holes you have mentioned I think are good holes (although many Metro members dislike the new 13th) but generally speaking people see nice green Santa Ana couch fairways at Metro and mistake that for a great golf course. That should not be what it is about. No way known it is a top 10 Aus course IMO.

Metro is 10 times better than Commonwealth. Commonwealth does nothing for me, crap fairways, soft poa greens, layout is nothing special. Kingston Heath the best I have played - better than royal IMO.

Fav Courses

Just thought i would start this one up.

Played settlers run yesturday and was very impressed. Not really long (would be if I played off the blacks) but you really had to think about your next 2 shots before you play your first. Bunkers in all the right spots and a real challenge if you miss the fairway. Probibly up there with Einsbury as the best I have played.

Anyone played southern lately? Played couple weeks ago its looking pretty good. Did like the 3 tiered par 3 12th though, into big bunker on the right then onto the middle tier, putting up top, think i got a 5 in the end, went round 103, thought it was alright considering its my 3rd proper round ever

1. Cypress Point
2. Pine Valley
3. Royal Melbourne (West)
4. St. Andrews (Old)
5. Sand Hills
6. Royal County Down
8. Shinnecock Hills
9. Turnberry
10. National Golf Links of America

Just got back from playing a few rippers in Europe.

Played, Ballybunion, Royal Troon, Tralee, Old Head of Kinsale & PGA Catalunya.

Ballybunion is easily the best course I've played in my life (and I've played just about every sandbelt course in Melbourne, a dozen times) and the most difficult, played with some pretty decent golfers, all sub 5 handicappers, and I topped the group with an 82 (off the backs).

Old Head is absolutely phenominal, privately owned, and met the owner by chance at the half way hut.

See below.

Different course to 10 years ago, really improved.

Certainly lived in Woodlands shadow for a while there, but stands on its own now.

Underrated.

FWIW my Victorian courses.

Kingston Heath
National - All courses
Royal Melbourne
Woodlands
St Andrews Beach
Victoria
Yarra Yarra
Huntingdale
Moonah Links
Metropolitan
Southern
Kingswoood
Spring Valley
Barwon Heads
Penninsula
Portsea
13th Beach
Settlers Run
Ranfurlie
Murray Downs
Horsham

Mornington Peninsula. Rosebud Park is a good course, especially the 1st hole with a slightly elevated tee hitting straight down the hill.

I've played there a few times but the last time I played was about 18 months ago. I can't remember a specific score but I always play the front 9 much better than the back 9. I love the first hole, a downhill par 5. I'm down to 20 handicap now, so I'm almost a 'bogey golfer' but I'm slowly improving. Now that I have finished Uni I have plenty of time to practice compared to previous years.

and just to add to this list, a few of the courses that i wouldnt waste my time on:

eagle ridge (augusta like clubhouse, freeway like golf course)
national (ocean....another thompson stuff up!!!)
heritage (very american)
safety beach (or as i call it, duck sh1t flats!!)
rosebud public

Have to diagree with that last comment, and agree with Aussie Gun.

Fantastic public course, one of the best in Victoria imo.

Isn't a fantastic design (it is a public course, in the true sense, I.E shorts and singlet).

But it is in as good a nick as most private courses, and better than some, it has its own grey water.

Slightly short, but makes up for it, as it's set on the side of Arthurs seat, so the fairways can be tricky to hit with the run off, very hilly course.

Its main feature though are its views.

You wont get better views in Victoria than this golf course.

Views of all of the Penninsula, on a clear day you can see the heads, all of the bay, the westernport, and Geelong in the distance.

The 1st is a feature, dead straight Par 5, with a wide fairway, with probably a 200 meter drop in height from top to bottom.

If you ever want to hit your longest drive, this is the hole.

Putts are hilarious too, as they will defy logic, and roll towards the sea every time.

Cerainly getting rave reviews online.

On Par said:
Hidden Gem” is a title handed out a little too liberally to define golf courses, Google returns over 1,200 searches for the keywords “hidden gem” and golf! So I dont use the Hidden Gem word often, however Rosebud Park Golf Course certainly does qualify for this title. Located in Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula, about an hour and a half from Melbourne, Rosebud Park is tucked away on a ridge above Rosebud overlooking Port Phillip Bay and offering some spectacular views.
Not overly long the layout is a Par 70 with undulating fairways and greens, many tee shots need to be planned ahead as a straight shot in the middle of a fairway can be punished by the sloping fairways! Greens and fairways were in superb condition, with very sandbelt like bunkers throughout. At $25 for 18 holes its a bargain! Tip: All the greens break towards the water!

I have the pleasure at working at The Dunes golf course in rye and its a fantastic course. Im not just saying that because i work there but i have been there for 3 years and have not heard one complaint about it. It got me into golf playing there

Greg Norman has just been commisioned to redesign the East Course at Grange. This was where he won his first professional title. Definately needs an upgrade but a good canvas to work on.
