As soon as i saw your name on this thread i knew that'd be amongst your responses. And not surprisingly, i completely agree! 1 of many absolute corka riffs from the 'had.

One of my all time favs would be Led Zeps "The Ocean". Its really gay, but i actually cut it up and use it as my mobile's ring tone! :o

The Police's "Message in a Bottle" is another one that always makes me feel good as soon as i hear it.

The bass line in Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" is also an all time fav.

it's a shame i'm so predictable :P

i don't know a lot of the older songs listed here but are any of these other riffs as simple as E G? (tuned down one step so technically D F)

back in black is pretty simple i suppose, E D A

Back In Black - AC/DC
Mary Pretends - Fuel
Gettin' Thru - Fuel
Absolute Zero - Faith No More
Jailbreak - AC/DC

Great call, evo. My favorite Zeppelin track. Along with 'Kashmir'.

Lets face it, Zepplin were the riff masters of the universe. You could comfortably name a dozen.

Alot of the same bands permiate through alot of peoples answers Deep Purple,Sabbath, Zepplin.

Those bands used to find an English countryside manor, lock themselves away for 6 months with many cases of whisky and vodka, various drugs and not leave till they'd produced a kick ass album.

I don't reckon a lot of bands have that sort of commitment these days.It seems to me more like- slap something together and let the engineer and the IT guys and the marketing depatment sort out the rest.

Then again I may be just a nostalgic old fart.

And none of this "one album every three or four years" bullshyte like bloody Tool and the like. They'd be cranking out top quality stuff at a rate of one platter per year. And that's not counting live albums and compilations.

Yes but I'd love to see a game show where the question was "name your own riff" and the contestants were the likes of Jimmy Page. Could be quite a frightening and funny experience all at once. :)
