Materamagic, good post.

I am pleased to partake in this as this album is truly a great album.

Rated 4 stars in the latest uncut magazine. I liked how they mentioned that Riding to Vanity Fair -was a "brooding song of betrayal and revenge" - i wonder who it is pointed at?

My favourite at this stage is - promise to you girl... but i am enjoying pretty much every track...

onya harmsey, promise to you girl is a great song. starts of reflective, then then the Abbey Road harmonies come in, then bang! the upbeat piano drives this song which takes many twists and turns, good pop music.

paul said vanity fair is directed at no one in particular, just people who reject friendship, my tip is Geoff Barker whom was fired as his publicist recently.

the good thing about this album is its sustained consistency and it gets better with every spin. more people should give it a try. :D

How many people on this board do you seriously think have listened to this cd? Isn't there a forum at Rolling Stone or Mojo?

this is a music forum. i, and you for that matter have the right to post about any artist that creates music. there are people who listen to the album, i dont care if this thread tops the pile, i just want to see how many people have listened to it and what they think.

Materamagic, wondering if you know what happened to Denny Laine?
After Wings he went bankrupt - but what happened with macca and laine's friendship?

Also, what did the publicist do that irritated Macca?

McCartney underpaid him and treated him as a minion. Whilst Linda McCartney was making millions from Wings whilst hardly being able to keep time with a tamborine, Laine was getting paid session musician wages.

do you have facts that back up what you just said? besides Denny played on several of Paul's solo sessions after Wings disbanded. Denny did well from Wings financially however he betrayed paul's trust going public with a few less complimentary things to say about the couple, yes it may be true that Denny didnt receive as much money as Paul did from Wings but there were reasons for that. At least he is credited where he co-wrote the songs including Mull Of Kintyre. Did you ever hear about Jojo Laine? Also I do know that Laine wanted to tour with Steve Holly and Wings but Paul didnt, there was the Marijuana Japan incident, which most of the group were ********ed about also Johns death which Paul did not want to go straight out and tour.

books may shed more light on this, there are several reasons, it depends who you talk too.

I'm not sure why Paul fired his publicist so I wont pretend to know why, Im sure the publicist will release a tell all book to continue the worlds vendetta against Paul. you think that Paul went through alot of people during his day but you must also ask how much money they made because of him.

this thread is about the new album lets talk about that

talking about macca - i am curious what your favourite macca album/single is from the 1970's.

Album - other than band on the run... do you go for mccartney, venus and mars or ram... difficult choice.

single - with a little luck, let em in or live and let die or band on the run.

Macca's 70's period is underrated in my opinion.

hidden gem - has to be oh woman oh why - the best led zeppelin impersonation song ever done.

Album: Has to be RAM, if you don't have it, get it mate. Back To The Egg is also very overlook and rocks, there is actually a member or Zep in one of the rockers that won grammy for best rock instrumental, that album touches on soul, punk, vaudeville, r and b and rock :D

Single: Another Day. Gets airplay still, one of his best singles from the 70's. Oh Woman Oh Why is that singles b-side. From the 80's My Brave Face was the best.

hidden gems: Everynight from his debut self titled LP. Junk from that same record. A scorching rocker called "beware my love" and many more

Interesting choice - Ram. Yes, it is a great album. More rocky than most of his albums... I have all of his albums from the 1970's - like em all...even wildlife. Really like Red Rose Speedway.

Back to the egg - pretty good. yes. By the way, have you ever seen the film clip for With A little luck ? - it is a classic film clip, you should see it if you can.

Never really got into his 80's stuff as much.. will have a listen to My Brave Face again one day. Too busy listening to macca's current album though.

i have all his 80's albums harmsey 37. Yes not as successful or great as the 70's but still interesting and these days getting back some credit. McCartney 2 is him doodling around with electro pop, at the time it was panned like a macca album had never been, its gaining some respect these days and was a pioneering album in retrospect. Tug of War is one of his best, you should get that one, George Martin produces and there are some great songs there, ballroom dancing, the pound is sinking, wanderlust, tug of war, take it away. The follow up, Pipes of Peace was panned by critics but is actually a good little pop album, this one had Michael Jackson collaborations. In 86 Press To Play didn't sell that well but is an interesting album, not really for casual fans. There are some interesting tracks. Pretty Little Head is one of the best peices of music he has ever done, the album sounds dated a little but the b sides are good too. Flowers In The Dirt, is arguably the best of the 80's after Tug Of War. It is melodic pop/rock at its finest, several minor hits, the pop of this one, the driving figure of eight, my brave face, one of his best singles and the acoustic put it there among the best there.

As for Red Rose Speedway that was titled so after McCartneys nanny, Rose having red hair. It is a melodic album. Single Pidgeon and Little Lamb Dragonfly are the best there. Wildlife is raw and still great to listen to today.

Yeah seen the video for With A Little Luck, they need to release a DVD with his videos, hes got a few good ones. Speaking of which, Coming Up video was very much copied by Outkasts "Hey Ya" :p Which other videos have you seen? in his latest, fine line, he is again shown performing all the instruments.

Not a Paul McCartney fan much - or any of the Beatles individually - never quite the same. I bought one album of Paul's - Flowers in the Dirt - never bothered after that. Wings Over America was okay, but that's about it.

wings over america is his finest live record available, for anyone who doubts the mans ability to rock, get this and listen to his voice on soily! beware my love! hi hi hi! letting go! call me back again! (his best wilson pickett impersonation) rockshow! among the performances and his bass playing is out front. Many fans from a few of his shows this year commented that his vocal acrobatics reminded them of the heady Wings Over America

I have listened to or own most of the 80's albums. i like tug of war... but really i think he pushed himself harder in the 70's and sort of lost direction in the 80's/90's for the most part (there were some great exceptions of course!!) This new album is back to as good as any of the 70's albums.

I didn't know that about red rose speedway - that is interesting. I like both of those songs you mentioned a lot.

Seen fine line video.. it is ok as videos go. nothing new.

I like the 70's clip mainly - Band on the run film clip is good for example.

have you ever seen the footage of him playing maybe i'm amazed - just him at the piano?

Yes I have. the 1976 tour where it was released as a live single in early 1977 some 7 years after it first appeared on recored. It was a top 10 hit and the best version of the song.

I have the video from 2002 back in the US DVD and also the Red Square performance the following year. He changes the way he sings it and its still a very emotional song, his best solo song in my book.

I hope one day he releases Wings Over America (Rockshow) on DVD it was the pinnacle of his live performances.

What did you think of Flaming Pie?

I like Flaming Pie.. but there are some songs that make me cringe.

eg The songs we were singing, that is a bit bland for me....but from song 6 onwards i can listen to the rest of the album without skipping.

Really like calico skies - i like all his instrumental/mother nature son type songs... it is a real strength in his song writing.
Beautiful Night, Great day all great songs.

Yeah, that is true. That was a high point that at least matches his 70's output.

do you like all his collaborations with Elvis Costello? He was the one that encouraged Macca to dust of the hofner bass after using the Rick and the Wall in the late 80's

i know elvis costello did a few good things in flowers in the dirt, but really i dont think elvis could challenge him enough to get the best out of him.

70's - macca had to be good as he had to compete against legacy of beatles.

chaos and creation - had to be good as the producer pushed him.

flowers in dirt has its moments.

i didn't know that costello pushed him into changing back to the hofner though.

he has a suprisingly strong chemistry when performing live with Neil Young, their harmonies in an acoustic setting, this occured at a recent Bridge Street Benefit Concert that Neil puts on. a record with these two would be interesting but i dont think it would happen although they have been friends for years
