Sampras.

We have no idea how Federer would have gone against guys like Boris Becker, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, John McEnroe, Jim Courier or any of the other great players that were around in Sampras' time.

However, Sampras beat them ALL.

The fact of the matter is, Roddick and Nadal are no match for the competition that Sampras faced, and while they're still young, Federer's current winning percentage only matches the one that Sampras retired with.

Federer still has to improve his winning percentage and break Sampras' record by a fair bit before I'll consider him better, because he's doing it against lesser competition.

Let's wait til Federer finishes his sareer before deciding this one. I have no doubt he will prove to be better than Sampras. A lot of factors come into that judgement including their record, number of grand slams won, quality of opposition, mental toughness, detemination and of course talent.

What cannot be argued however is that Federer posesses a far superior all-round game to Sampras. Sampras may have been a better serve and volleyer and had pretty good ground strokes to boot, but Federer has it all. Last night's demolition of Roddick was amazing. It was a humiliation. Is there anything this bloke can't do?

Wow, I did this on the Tennis board and all I got was a heap of crap about what surface the non-existant, completely hypothetical match would take place on......

Not a great tennis fan, but last night Federer was nothing short of amazing.

A priveledge to watch a champion like him.

Huh,

John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl had retired by the time Sampras was no1.

Becker was almost finished also.

Can't compare them, when they didn't play the same era.

On ability alone Federer. Watching his destruction of Roddick was, well, Quantum Tennis 101, the masters degree textbook of Tennis. I've been lucky enough to witness both at their peaks and the way Fed plays, his shot selection and the sheer control he plays them with is nothing short of sublime

exactly right, he is superb and has some of the best skills ever, he can pretty much do as he pleases.

As a tennis player an very keen watcher i think Federer is the better player. He is the complete package with every shot in the book and perfect mentally. Sampras was a champion but Federer would knock him off in 3 i reckon. No one can do a thing about those ground strokes.

Federer easily I'd say. Even Rod Laver said he is completely amazed by his ability. He said "It's unfair for one player to be so good at everything" or something along thsoe lines. Quite a complement coming form one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

I take your point, but the question is asking who is capable of playing the best tennis. Sampras played in a stronger era, but Federer can hardly be penalized for that. Is well-known Federer's career has been a tale of two halves, and since getting fair dinkum his statistics are extraordinary, his record against the top players even moreso.
Obviously Sampras' record is still superior but, to answer the question, Federer at his peak is better than anything Sampras ever produced.

Can't wait for tomorrow's match. If Gonzales continues to play to the standard he has the past 2 weeks, he can beat Federer. Have never seen anyone play the game the way he has this tournament.

Yes, and most tennis observers would rate rod laver and borg above sampras in ability and what they could have achieved.

Also many retired players are saying that the competition is much harder these days then it was before.

I too would rate Borg and Laver above Sampras in terms of ability. Sampras v Federer is simply unfair as Sampras just didn't have his talent.

To me the best player (so far) would be decided by a match between McEnroe circa '84 v Federer. Until now I thought no player could possibly be as gifted as McEnroe and then I saw Federer demolish Roddick.

But when you factor in McEnroe's peers.... like Borg,Connors,Lendl,Wilander,Edberg & Becker you get a clearer picture of the best player ever.

Nobody that has ever lived could beat Federer. He has no weaknesses. He has mastered every aspect of the game.

I am completely sick of him winning all the time and I wish he'd bloody take a year off or get an injury so we can have some competition, but you still have to marvel at his ability every time you see him. No one on Earth is anywhere near as good as he is. If he can maintain his current standard for another 4-5 years there will be no doubt that he is the best tennis player ever.

How do you figure that they had retired when he played and beat them all?

Go ahead and look it up - He really did beat them in Grand Slam play.
