We are crying out for someone who will take a contested overhead mark and crash packs. I know he is young, but since the season is shot, we might as well plan for the future. Its time for MEGA Watts to pull on a Crows guernsey and learn from the King. We could have used someone like Fergie tonight.

Vote yes for Fergus Watts :D

If he has another good one this week with WWT, I'll go against the other half of me that says patience - don't sacrifice this kid because the senior players won't stand up and be counted.

He would learn a lot playing alongside Carey, though.

The other sides seem to play their 18 year olds when they get a chance, why is it that we want to make them wait for so long. He needs to be given a chance, he was in the 25 this week so he's not far away. It doesnt mean he'll play every game from now on - mind you if he does then it means he's going ok.

I cant think of a better marking option from our list at this stage.

Where do I sign!?!?!

Be very interested to see how he goes and where he plays tomorrow. In the named side it says he's playing in a BP with Stevo at CHF, hopefully they'll give it a go with positions reversed.

If he has another solid game and comes through well, I say chuck him in the deep end. Welsh will probably get games at the tribunal, Perrie is still maybe a week away with injury and even more with form, Stevo needs more games, Rutten sounds like he's injured too, and we need a crash packing, contest-making bigman, Fergie is the man.

And probably not a bad game to come in for as well, a relatively low key one against the Hawks at the G, a place where he's played footy before, is familiar with, in his home town, away from the expectation of Adelaide.

Luke Jerricho went through last season almost un discussed, low profile, low expectations, no pressure, and this year he has surprised us, because our expectations were realistic.

Now I don't disagree with blooding Watts at some point during the season in a pocket, to learn from the "king".
However what I do disagree with, is the need to push up the "great white saviour" and create expectations and pressure on the kid at this stage of his career.

He was pick 14, not pick 1!
He is not the new Carey!
Let the kid, for christ sake develope naturally to be a good player for us, maybe, maybe better than just good.
But your comments that we needed someone like Watts, insinuates he was the difference between winning and losing, and he is going to be a game winner for us NOW!

Jericho is not a game winner currently, I would expect Watts would play to around the same level, so please lets get our expectations of this kid right, or if he fails to live up immediately to expectations that your creating, he'll be crucified!! (says he leaving the pulpit)

The voice of reason.

Reluctantly I voted yes, on the basis that I think our season is stuffed, and that he could learn a lot playing alongside Wayne Carey. There and nowhere else.

But to think that an 18 year old kid will be the white knight in shining armour is ridiculous. Like every player he will have to learn his trade at AFL level, and adjust to the bigger bodies, increased tempo, etc etc.

IMO Jericho is doing well. He's playing a year ahead of his time, as he was only playing SANFL reserves last year. Anything up to 10 possessions a game is a good return for such an inexperienced player, and he's doing that. Next year will see the return from him for the playing time invested in him this year.

Back to Watts. The same principle applies. If Fergie plays and gets around 6 to 7 possessions a game in his early games I'll be happy. The rewards will come next year.

Don't kill the kid with unreal expectations. That's why Port sensibly didn't play young Ebert at all last year.

Take a chill pill will you and go kick your cat and don't take your frustration out on me:mad:

Instead of reading selectively why don't you take my post as a whole. I am pretty sure I said we might as well plan for the future. I am not saying he would be a difference but I am pretty sure that someone who can mark the ball the way Fergus does, would be of help. No I don't expect him to be our saviour this year. He demands spot a lot more that some of the girls that pulled on the guernsey last night.

;) AAh a good healthy debate.
I did read all the posts, and my point is you have built this kid up to be bigger than Ben Hur, and IMO that can create unreal expectations, so early in his career. Maybe not in your mind, but in others.
Look at the critisism Reilly is getting currently on this board, simply because of the expectations that are created by posters on this board.

Yes play Watts if the match committee says the time is right, but I'll be expecting 6-7 possessions per game at best, and for him to have some of current deficiencies exposed at AFL level.

Well how other people's expectations are not my concern.

People can have their opinion of Reilly but I still rate him as an integral part of our future and a MUST keep. He can't show us anything if he is injured or not getting a game. Same goes for Schuback.

I don't have great expectations of Watts for this year and for next year. I understand he is an 18 year old kid who is still learning the game and his deficiencies will be exposed but he is good enough to learn the game at AFL level. If someone like Skipworth or Mattner can get a game then Watts should get a game. I realise they play different positions but on talent and ability alone (at this point in time) he deserves his spot more.

I want Watts to play aongside Carey so he can learn from that. I am not expecting Watts to be a saviour and if other people have great expectations of him for the next couple of years then they have rocks in their heads.

It was good to have Ben Hart back last night.
I remember when he got his first game, he was about 23 years old and built like mr universe.
just as well we left him to develop (not waste) in the SANFL or he would proberbly only lasted a couple of seasons before he got dishartned and quit football.

Sarcasm ;)

He is having a crack at those who say let him develop in SANFL ;)

If Watts is good enough he will develop in the AFL. HE has that attitude and agression that makes him the sort of player that is capable of developing in the AFL rather than SANFL.

Speaking of Watts, I am now off to Adelaide Oval to see him kick 10 goals and grab 20 pack marks :p;) :p
