What is happening with Fergus Watts? Surely he is in line for a game and with our team struggling to kick scores of any substance, he needs to come into the side. I guess if Gehrig is a late omission, then he will come in. He had big wraps on him and has overcome his ankle injury, to be playing good form with Casey. I had the pleasure to meet him and he is a fabulous bloke too. A really good role model for the youth.

Yeah he is a good bloke but he is not up to the standard of AFL football, never was, never will. Only at the club because of his old man, absolute joke getting him. Did nothing at Adelaide and played 1 good game in U18's and got drafted.

He kicked 10 goals in the 2005 SANFL semi final..that's terrible isn't it?! Not too many blokes running around doing that at 20 years of age!!

Sorry mate, but you're WAY off base here. We certainly have players in Casey that won't cut it at AFL level (like Brooks - sorry StKildonian, but if he wasn't picked THIS week, with Kosi out, he'll never play AFL again...), but Watts is CERTAINLY not one of them.

Even though I'm living in Vancouver for the year, my usual home base these days is Adelaide (my boss had a commemorative photo of '97 on his wall... pity me...). When we got Watts, all my friends who were Crows fans were lamenting it. Many of them were a little relieved when he got injured, because it stalls his progress to becoming, to their mind, one of the best full-forwards since Dunstall (they can be quite nice that way, Crows and Power fans... being glad when another team's rookie gets injured...). They really care about SANFL over there - it's a much tougher comp than the VFL and under HEAPS more scrutiny. Watts' 10 goals in that match counts for a helluva lot, along with his otherwise consistently good performances at that level.

Our team will be stronger when we, first of all, make Roo a tall running midfielder (at the expense of Fiora); and second, Watts goes into half-forward. When Gehrig retires at the end of the year, move Watts into full-forward and Sweeney into half-forward.

We all read your board at the time that he left and the vast majority were insistent that a second round wasn't enough for him and he had a great future.

It's funny how things change.

Thank God you're not coaching. Roo may seem fast when he's got a lumbering CHB on him, but playing him on the ball would rob him of his greatest strengths - leading and marking - and expose his greatest weaknesses - speed and agility (as I say, he has loads of both, but not at ground level when compared to elite midfielders).

Thanks for the coaching analysis. Just out of interest, didn't he play on the wing for a year or two under GT? And anyway, being in the midfield isn't all about being on the ball, particularly given the high accountability passing game Lyon seems to want to play (if the last few weeks are anything to go by). It almost seems like a stoppage is a loss for us when we're in the midfield - we instead want somebody who can run into space, take a mark from somebody mopping up in the backline (when Gram or S Fisher isn't running out with it themselves), quickly assess a good pass, kick accurately to that pass, and be off running straight away again. Roo can do that in spades. I agree, in a stoppage, he shouldn't be used - just leave him out to the far side for the pass.

Was one of our best talents when we traded him to you, but he wanted to go home.

Still think a second rounder wasn't enough.

for what its worth - I rated him, Managed to be in the best 18 (thats right started on field) at 20 for what was at the time the equal strongest club in the comp (managed to lose 4 GF's to Centrals or something like that), His ten goals was a great effort - I can accept that their opponents that day were struggling but he still kicked goals on 3 AFL listed players (Gilham,White and Roe), however I reckon Chris Knights and a couple of the eagles lads were giving him silver service but 10 goals is 10 goals. His major problem was agility, and he had the turning circle of a B Double :D

Was very disappointed to see him go, I still reckon you got a bargin he just got unlucky with injury. Chances are we will see the same thing with Meesen anyway !!

Your delerious, like most South Aussies, the VFL is head and shoulders the best reserves comp in Australia.

Watts was a prodigy as a younger player, he was being touted as the next Carey before he was drafted, I was really keen on him prior to Adelaide picking him.

they should suspend fraser for belting females and play Watts at ff till the the end of the year tank it for draft picks.
I suspect if Fraser is found guilty he will cop a further penalty from the AFL and if that does happen I would expect him to retire.

haahaaaahaaaaa - Comedy Gold !....:thumbsu:.:D

....but seriously....regardless of how Adelaide or the Saints valued him at the time of his transfer, the interesting part of all this is that Fergus rated himself so highly that he felt hard done by in Adelaide by the match committee for not giving him a chance. It's always easy in hindsight but I think his abilities have been well and truly put in context now.

I think 2 things contributed to his over valuation at the time of his trade.

  1. We were screaming out (and still are) for a long term quality tall forward option...and
  2. His Dad's connection at St Kilda
