He will be paid out, so livelihood is probably not the right term.

Regardless, we aren't a rehab clinic. We have done more to help him than anyone else.
Football is his livelihood, it's all he knows how to do, well professionally (if you can use that word with Fev), well as in get paid to do something. With that taken away what does he have left?

As for the payout, that won't last long given his debts.

The timing of the call does seem strange though. Apparently he was making positive progress, so why the decision now to cut him?

I'm with Twomey here. There's a time to revel in Carlton's fortunes in regards to the trade, but I don't think this is it. A man's life could very well be at stake at this point. I certainly hope that Brisbane, Carlton and the AFL provide him the resources he needs to get his life back on track, in or out of AFL football...

His "livelihood" would have come to an end at the end of 2008 if it wasn't for Brisbane. Really can't understand the point you are trying to make.

He will get close to the same amount of money that he would have got had he stayed.

Combine that with the fact that there will be many state league clubs offering him the chance to keep playing the game.

I personally would have given him another go, but the Lions have not shafted him here.

Voss & Brisbane come out as looking pretty poor in their player development & support structures. Even moreso when Carlton, his former employers, who aren't know for this, have sent former players employed by Visy to look after him.

As the Lions you have to be concerned what sort of effect this news will have on Fev in his current mental state of depression, being told this his career, his livelihood, is over.

Probably the same as the many blokes who get told thier career is over before it even starts because of injury or just lacking that X factor as a footballer.

Smart players should claim depression at the beginning of thier careers to avoid an early culling. maybe thats what has happened at my club over the last thirty years.

Millions of dollars for half a years work. Wish my boss was as ruthless as them.

Sad end to players career if true.

For the last 10+ years he has been an AFL player at the highest level. This is what he does best. He currently has a contract with your club to play there for the next 2 years. Your club has apparently taken the decision to terminate that relationship at a time when he is mentally fragile. Yes he will get paid but the money is not the only motivator. You will be denying him the chance to continue being an AFL player at the highest level - what he does best - hence his career and livelihood as an AFL player will be over, at a time when he probably needs it the most.

Brisbane have done nothing for Fevola.

Gone after one year.

If Fevola goes off the rails because he doesn't have footy to cling to, then the Lions should bear their fair share of the responsibility for this.

Voss will be next.

The AFLPA, the Spirit Of Carlton, the Blues and his management will be the only footy people who will help Fevola.

We have done more to help him than anyone else.

In the space of 12 months?

I'm not blaming anyone here as we don't even know how true this is, but if the Lions are sacking Fev after only a year at the club then they've hardly done all that they can.

But that's a key difference. Fev has a career as an AFL player. He has a contract with an AFL club.

For other blokes who get told it's over before they start, they wouldn't know what they've missed because they didn't make it. Fev's has made it but is about to lose it, despite being under contract, and at a time when he's mental condition is not the best.

BULLSHIT.

Apart from hiring him, and then trying to sack him over a trumped up charge in the desparate hope of salary cap relief, and then sacking him for being no more of a deadshit than he was before your idiot self obsessed coach allready knew he was when he sold the Club's future for him.

Exactly what did noble Brisbane do for Fev?

Really champ. Give it up.

Your supposedly powerful opinions on this subject are unsupportable, weak and constantly changing. Walking away might just help you to avoid further cred loss.

I really fear for Fevola if this turns out to be true. Football is what he does best and to have that taken away from him would be devastating.

I personally don't care. Fevola has abilities and opportunities that most of us can only dream of and yet he managed to completely screw that up because of alcohol. I have no sympathy for someone like Fev who has been given chance after chance and seemingly has learnt nothing from those experiences.

IF the Lions cut him I'd open tomorrow's betting market with Fev $1.10 to be a Giant in 2012.

You just know that Sheedy is waiting to grab him as an "un-contracted player" and that the AFL would allow it. They could pay him a bundle to get him out of debt, use him as a marketing tool and give him 2-3 years to get his life back on track while the kids develop around him.

It's WIN-WIN-WIN

Giants get a big game player with advertising potential.
Lions get a compensation drfat pick for losing an "uncontracted player"
AFL get headline news for GWS in thier first year.

I'm not so sure that Sheedy or the AFL would want Fev around all those impressionable kids, particularly the AFL given all the negative press he has brought to the game. They don't need bad publicity in a fresh market, couldn't see them risking it.
