I could see them spinning it as "AFL saved this man from self destruction".

The biggest variable is the Sydney media. If they get stuck into Fev and his private life, ala Hutchy, then it could get ugly. If they can manage everything, get him in rehab this year, let Sheedy take all the media focus...

I think it's a very real chance from a Giants POV.

I still won't believe that the Lions have let him go until it's annouced b the club though. If tonight was anything to go by then they won't be any worse with him in the side hahaha :D

I think Fev must except the blame if this is true.

He had a chance to start again with Brisbane, they put their faith in him to do the right thing but he just wasn't up to it.
We aren't talking about some errant 18 year old here but a seasoned footballer.
Now those same people who put their faith in him could now lose their jobs careers thanks to his actions.

Fev will walk out of this deal with plenty of coin and offers of media work so don't feel too sorry for his "hardship"

I think the Lions will suffer the most unfortunately and it will be a challenge to survive the repercussions brought on by his antics.

If he is sacked, he will play again in 2012 imo.

A club will surely pick him up for something, possible GWS but not so sure.

Would be disappointed to see his AFL Career end like this, though he has had alot of chances.

But that's a key difference. Fev has a career as an AFL player. He has a contract with an AFL club.

For other blokes who get told it's over before they start, they wouldn't know what they've missed because they didn't make it. Fev's has made it but is about to lose it, despite being under contract, and at a time when he's mental condition is not the best.

I feel more for a bloke like Coughlin or Snell who find that thier career is over for reasons they cant help. Maybe they are careers that started and involved waiting on the sidelines tormented by thier mates going out there each week.

Contract or no contract, footy is probably the gift they have been given in life. That they have forged something on the side is to thier credit.

I remembering listening to Snell talk about his career ending injury and it seems less sympathy should be forthcoming because of his mental resiliance.

not convinced of that - Barry Hall might have got another gig in his 30s but then again he wasn't stuffing up OFF the field. Fev is almost certainly going to be consigned to the "too hard" basket, and the best outcome for him is to land a job as the resident clown on some football panel show - obviously not TFS since they hung him out to dry at the end of 2009. Marngrook?

say what you will about carlton, they at least managed to keep him in check for a decade

he'll be dead in 6 months

His "livelihood" would have come to an end at the end of 2008 if it wasn't for Brisbane. Really can't understand the point you are trying to make.

He will get close to the same amount of money that he would have got had he stayed.

Combine that with the fact that there will be many state league clubs offering him the chance to keep playing the game.

I personally would have given him another go, but the Lions have not shafted him here.

So it leaves the Lions in a position where the payout is spread over 2 years regarding Salary Cap , the same as the length left of his contract. That means the Cap will be bursting, as it would've been if he was playing, making it hard to re-sign a few of those young blokes coming out of contract at the end of the year. GWS will be rubbing their hands.

One trade has been a total stuff-up with still more possible damage to come.

Fair chance, if he plays in a State League comp he'll bolster our Carlton affliate team, the Bullants.

I disagree. Sure, he must accept responsibility for his own actions, but Brisbane took a huge gamble here (a gamble most thought was destined to fail), and lost. To sign a player with his shocking record on a lucrative lkong term contract and have no restraints or escape clause written into it is just plain negligence on Brisbane's behalf and I hope ALL other clubs learn from their mistake. I also hope and pray that ALL other players learn a lesson from it as well. Hopefully the days of idiot behaviour of footballers are slowly coming to an end.

He is in a private hospital for mental health issues plus addiction.

How ANY club could think it is an appropriate time to sack any player is beyond me.

IF they are doing this, then its a massive negative marking decision by the club. A huge backlash from supporters.

and what happens if something happens to fev? Fev has the total support of the playing group, imagine them sitting back and watching this unfold. Nice supportive environment for any player to find themselves in.

The greatest problem I have with the AFL system is players are wrapped in cotton wool. The support network they live in does nothing to strengthen character for many players, it exists simply to keep players on the park and to hell with everything else.

It also exists to ensure a lot of the stupid things players do are swept under the carpet and never come under public scrutiny. It still happens, although these days it is becoming harder for clubs to keep things from the probing media.

I do admit that this network is partially to blame for Fevola's current state, but how long do you keep bailing someone out?

People lose their jobs every day. Some of these people are mentally fragile but have no support network to assist them like AFL players have. They have to deal with it on their own. Fevola has received more "support" than the average person could ever dream of. It's time for him to learn how to stand up and deal with his own problems, and not have someone else do it for him.

Too true.

What an ignorant move. The guy has just been through 7 weeks of self admitted rehab... way to support another human being in need Brisbane???

Worse possible timing... Shocking people management.

I'm with Twomey here. There's a time to revel in Carlton's fortunes in regards to the trade, but I don't think this is it. A man's life could very well be at stake at this point. I certainly hope that Brisbane, Carlton and the AFL provide him the resources he needs to get his life back on track, in or out of AFL football...

A man's life could be at stake ??

Get your hand off it !!

The guy gets paid 20 times more than you do per year to run around and kick a footy yet you think he deserves sympathy ..........

He has brought it all on himself and has squandered the opportunity a lot of other people would give their left gonad for.

I agree.

Not many posters on here would earn $100,000 a year salary.
If you did, well Fev will basically get 15 - 18 years worth of salary in a lump sum.

Not like a regular settlement for being made redundant. Plus he will earn money for going on The Footy Show and being a dick (a la Newman).

This is a worry - many players will judge the club on this one; one thing with Fev is that he is very likeable in a larrikinish way and no one likes to see someone kicked when they're on the ground!

On another note, Fev's indiscretions are well-documented (can't help think that many other players get away with just as much, and in some cases a whole lot more, because they don't attract the same constant media scrutiny), but I'm worried that the days of the "football character" are all but gone - the new AFL professionalism (more like father knows best paternalism - Andy and Adrian style) is now all consuming, and football will one day become so homogenised that it'll be like watching two teams of identical cyborgs battle it out.

What the heck has anyones salary got t do with them having a major depressive illness requiring a stay in a mental health facility?

The nuts and bolts of the whole thing really. The other players and families of ALL clubs will be cringing at this treatment of a mentally ill player.

Like him or not, this is not the time to cut him loose......
