Did anyone else think that he played absolutely dreadful today? I say this partly because I have such high expectations of him I suppose. But consider this. IMO, he is a brilliant mark for his size, mainly because he gets a few metres on his opponent out of the blocks, hence making an easy overhead/chest mark, given appropriate delivery.

But the amount of times today he tried that BS, that Willow does too, the lead into the dummy mark attempt into the dropstep around and attempt to run onto it. It's good as a suprise, maybe once a week, but not constantly. Really gave me the s***s, wish he just attacked the ball.

And on my boy Johnson, I thought he was played too deep in the goalsquare, he needs to be out at the contest. We were lucky today, we won without what I can remember, too many lead/mark goals, something which we won't always get away with. Someone needs to provide strong leads from the square/FF region. I've decided Haynes isn't the man. He is developing into a decent secondary lead, a Heady to a Sumich type, but we do need a BIG target ... *cough Willow/McDougall cough*

I thought Fido was ok today. Hayden played well on him but he took his opportunities when they were their which is what a goalsneak should do. He kicked 2 and that's all you can ask from a forward pocket. I think we may have expected more seen as he kicked 13 in the past two games.

I only saw him do the let it go, run back onto twice so I dont think he did it everytime. I do agree though that we need a bigger presence up forward. Wilson, McDougall, perhaps Lynch. Gaspar obviously when he gets back. Haynes has a great lead and is a great mark but I think your absolutely right with the Sumich/Heady angle.

Hayden had a blinder and soundly beat Matera but he still managed 2.2. It could have been 4 goals. As long as he is still kicking goals and putting on defensive pressure, he will be in the side.

Woosha was asked the same thing in the press conference and pointed out that Phil's defensive pressure is enormously important to us.

He also ended up with 2.2, which you'd take from a forward pocket on average every week.

Having said that, he was one of the few Eagles beaten by his direct opponent on the day, as Hayden was (to me) their equal best player with Woods.

To be beaten by his direct opponent and still manage 4 shots on goal for 2.2 says a bit about Matera. Class player.

Fido had a very disapointing day today, but when Sampi was firing, it wasn't to much of a worrying thing. Everyone has an off day now and then, plus Hayden did play very well for his 10th game or so.

Probably the only one on one contest that the Dockers won, but then Phil still kicked 2, which is pretty good on a poor day.

He'll come back even better.

I have to say I rate Hayden quite highly in the Dockers. If their 'superstars' in Croad and Farmer played as well as Hayden did they would be better players.

I also thought Sampi won his battle on Shane Parker (who 'rarely gets beaten') - good effort for a rookie kid.

Hayden was excellent yesterday, has IMO, beaten Fido in the last 2 derbys.

Still, Fido's defensive work was as good as ever and he continues to be our best chance of keeping the ball in our forward line

I agree. Phil may have opened the door for Sampi and others to kick goals. Hayden beat Matera but left the door open and Sampi, Fletcher, Haynes, etc, made them pay.

It's the same each week. Normally if one is getting beaten, another stands up to take over.
I don't just mean other players standing up I mean Fido dragging opposition defenders to other places of the ground or making them concentrate too much on him and thus opening doors for others to kick goals. Though beaten by Hayden, Fido may have put a lot of pressure on Freo's defense and players like Sampi got more chances to kick goals.

As long as Sampi and Fido kick around 5 between them each game, they have done their job.
Yeah 5 from those two and around 5 from our midfield...the rest to come from anybody who puts their hand up. Should be enough to get us home.
