October 2017

Brendon Bolton announced a shock resignation from Carlton, citing a move to North Melbourne as the reason behind his departure. North reportedly offered Bolton $20 million over 14 years, which was an offer hard to refuse. His replacement was quickly named as Gold Coast Suns' assistant Peter Williams who was relatively fresh to the elite level, having joined Gold Coast just a year earlier. He impressed many with his work ethic and somehow raced straight to the top of the Blues' hit list. The Victorian welcomed a return home, and despite joining the Blues after barracking for arch rival Collingwood as a kid, Williams was excited for the future at Carlton.

With the likes of Jacob Weitering, Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay and Jack Silvagni coming out of contract, the new Blues coach will have plenty of work to do this pre-season after the Blues finished 16th on the table, ahead of only North Melbourne. His first press conference will be up soon.

October 2017

Peter Williams addressed the media for the first time as Carlton head coach, with plenty to say about the club and the approach he would take over the off-season. "Clearly we finished 16th this season so we have plenty of areas to improve," he told journalists at Ikon Park. "I see the club as a really young and exciting club, and I want to continue that by bringing in young, talented players who will play the Carlton way."

When asked what brand of football he would like to bring to the club, Williams responded "I like exciting, fast, skillful football, but I also want every club to know Carlton will not be an easy team to beat. "Win, lose or draw, we want to walk off that ground knowing we have left nothing in the tank. "One thing I don't want us to be known as is lazy, noncompetitive or easy beats."

Williams said before he could look to trade period, he had a number of players he had to re-sign including Jacob Weitering, Harry McKay, Charlie Curnow and Jack Silvagni with just 13 players signed on for next year. "We'll address our priorities and re-sign those players we see a future at the club, then see if there are those out there at other clubs that wish to join us, then from there we assess the remainder of the players and see who might be better served elsewhere. "We want to head to the draft, so we're keen to bring in some good talent."

October 2017 - Off-season coaching movements

Three Carlton staff members have retired from the game including midfield coach John Barker. The assistant coach Barker, Josh Fraser and Tim Clarke all retired, citing family as the reason behind their departures. New coach Peter Williams thanked them for their time at the Carlton Football Club, and was quick to replace Barker in the role. He offered a two-year contract to former Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade, who subsequently accepted the offer. Among the others hired were Scott Watters, Mark Bickley and outgoing North coach Brad Scott.

October 2017 - TRADE WEEK PREVIEW

A number of older players will be on the chopping block in the 2017 Trade Week, with so many players out of contract. Of those potentially looking at other destinations, Ed Curnow, Matthew Wright and Dale Thomas could be on the way out, while Nick Graham, Billy Smedts, Dylan Buckley and Daniel Gorringe are unlikely to be offered new contracts and may seek greener pastures. It is believed Levi Casboult is also seeking a trade, while first round draft pick Blaine Boekhorst is assessing his options.

TRADE WEEK - CARLTON STUN AFL WORLD WITH BUDDY BEAUTIFUL TRADE

Carlton has not wasted anytime in the 2017 Trade Week when word of Sydney's salary cap conundrum spread around the league. The Blues sensationally pounced, offering picks 2, 20 and 54 for Lance Franklin, Josh P. Kennedy and Pick 30. Initially intending to head to the draft with pick two, the word that Sydney needed to trade some big guns, with the offer too good to be true. Ironically, Sydney offered pick 20 back to the Blues in exchange for Sam Kerridge, which was accepted. In the other trade accepted by the Blues, Dale Thomas headed to St Kilda with Dylan Roberton heading to Ikon Park.

IN: Lance Franklin, Josh P. Kennedy, Pick 30, Dylan Roberton
OUT: Sam Kerridge, Dale Thomas, Pick 2, Pick 54

TRADE WEEK - FULL TRADE WEEK

Carlton has certainly made the most of trade week, welcoming in 10 players and farewelling 11 in a huge list turnover. Among those brought in are Lance Franklin, Josh P. Kennedy and Brodie Grundy, with an emphasis on speed off half-back through Dylan Roberton, Shane Savage and Jarrod Harbrow. The Blues have lost their first round pick and will enter the draft at Pick 20.

IN: Lance Franklin, Josh P. Kennedy, Dylan Roberton, Shane Savage, Matt Scharenberg, Brandon Ellis, Tom Nicholls, Jarrod Harbrow, Jade Gresham, Brodie Grundy, Pick 30, Pick 48, Pick 65

BLUES DELIST EIGHT

Carlton has brought its senior list to 34 ahead of the 2017 AFL National Draft by cutting eight players, including four rookies. Rhys Palmer, Sam Rowe, Dennis Armfield and Dylan Buckley were delisted, while Alex Silvagni, Andrew Gallucci, Ciaran Sheehan and Matt Korcheck were not renewed their rookie contracts.

Carlton will head to the draft with selections 20, 30, 48 and 65 as its first four picks.

BLUES'S SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PRESENCE

FIVE of Carlton's seven draftees were members of South Australia's National Under 18 Championship side with Vincent Cloake (pick 30), Alfie Hydes (pick 48), Terrance Rothwell (pick 65) as well as Erick Seeary and Leighton Thirkle (both rookie) all representing the Croweaters at the carnival. Along with the South Australians, Carlton also picked up West Australians Asad Barnes (pick 20) and Konnor Litchfield (rookie) meaning none of their draftees hailed from Victoria. Hawthorn star Jarryd Roughead was somehow sitting in the pre-season draft, while small forward Josh Begley was picked up in the rookie draft after just one year with Essendon. Barnes appears to be the most ready made of the bunch, with his inside presence likely to help Patrick Cripps and Josh P. Kennedy throughout the season.

CARLTON ROCKET INTO PREMIERSHIP FAVOURITISM

AFTER finishing lowly 16th last season, Carlton is ranked the top side by Champion Data for the 2018 season. They sit ahead of Adelaide, West Coast, Geelong and Fremantle who are all expected to have good seasons. Carlton are ranked #1 in the forward line, #7 in the midfield, #10 in defence and #5 in the ruck departments.

The Blues head into the first NAB Cup game this weekend, taking on St Kilda in what will be new coach Peter Williams' first game in charge. He has said he will be testing plenty of players out seeing what could be the best side for the season.

2018 NAB CUP FINAL - CARLTON VS. SYDNEY

BUDDY BRILLIANT BLUES

CARLTON has produced a memorable NAB Cup campaign to win the competition by two goals. The grand final looked done and dusted at half-time after the Blues booted six second quarter goals to one to lead by 40 points at the main break. The Swans hit back with eight goals to three of their own to cut the deficit to nine points, before Carlton steadied to win 18.5 (113) to 15.11 (101). It was fitting that the Michael Tuck Medallist was Lance 'Buddy' Franklin who booted seven goals from 20 disposals against his old side. Carlton received more than $600,000 in prizemoney for its triumph.

2018 Premiership Season - Press Conference with Carlton coach Peter Williams

Q: It must feel good coming off a pre-season like that, coach?

A: Yeah it was a really strong performance across the four weeks and I felt it showed what we are capable of, but we aren't taking anything for granted, it's a long season.

Q: Buddy Franklin started on fire, booting 30 goals in his past four games, how important is he to the team?
A: He's obviously a crucial member and a reliable forward for us. But he works well with Jarryd (Roughead), Harry (McKay) and Charlie (Curnow) up there along with the smalls.

Q: Will we see any of your draftees in action this season?
A: It's a bit early to tell, but if they prove their form in the VFL, then I have no qualms about putting them on the big stage.

Q: What are your goals for this season?
A: I want us to maximise our potential and like every other club, I want to win a flag. Coming from 16th we are a fair way behind the eight-ball, but after a good pre-season we're quietly confident.

BLUES STORM PAST DEES IN FINAL QUARTER BURST

CARLTON has started its 2018 season in the best possible way with a tight victory over Melbourne at the MCG. In front of just 39,356, the Blues produced a forward line performance that made the rest of the league take note as Lance Franklin's eight goals headlined a forward 50 that include four majors from Harry McKay and two from Jarryd Roughead.

Despite losing most statistics - the Blues had just 27 inside 50s for 26 scoring shots - they hurt Melbourne where it counted. The defence rebounded well while the midfield had plenty of improvement left it it, losing the clearances and being dominated in the tackles. Along with Franklin, Josh P. Kennedy and Patrick Cripps combined well for 15 of the Blues' 22 clearances. New recruits Shane Savage (19 disposals, 10 rebounds) and Brodie Grundy (18 disposals, 23 hitouts) were also prominent in the win.

The Blues managed to escape unscathed from injury, but a report for eye gouging to young star Sam Petrevski-Seton soured the win. He received three matches at the Tribunal on Monday night.

Carlton 3.3 | 7.3 | 13.5 | 17.9 (111)

Melbourne 5.4 | 7.5 | 13.9 | 15.10 (100)

FREO GIVE BLUES THE 'HEAVE HO'

CARLTON has crashed back to earth with a five-point defeat at the hands of fellow premiership contender Fremantle. Trailing throughout the game, Carlton surged home in the final quarter booting four goals to one, but fell five points short of victory in the 16.9 (105) to 15.10 (100) loss. Amad Barnes made his debut for the Bluebaggers and was impressive, collecting the most disposals for the losers with 26, while Brandon Ellis - fresh out of the substitute's vest for this game - had 23 disposals. Lance Franklin booted 4.3, while Harry McKay continued his good form with three majors.

In a mirror to the week before, a report again soured the Blues with Jarrod Pickett rubbed out for four weeks for scratching. In the reserves, Sam Petrevski-Seton had 44 disposals despite supposedly suspended, while Billy Smedts picked up 42 disposals to stake a claim for a spot in next week's senior side. Rookie Josh Begley bagged five goals for the second week in a row and will hope to be upgraded at some point, while draftees Vincent Cloake and Konnor Litchfield both had impressive games in the midfield.

Carlton 5.3 | 7.4 | 11.9 | 15.10 (100)

Fremantle 6.4 | 10.4 | 15.6 | 16.9 (105)

FRANKLIN DESTROYS FORMER CLUB IN SIX-GOAL WIN

LANCE Franklin has shown his former club what he is still capable of, putting in a clinical performance during his new side's 36-point victory over Hawthorn. Franklin booted nine goals in the 20.6 (126) to 13.12 (90) win, as Carlton bounced back from a loss the week before to get back on the winners' board. In front of 67,391, the Blues once again could not dominate the midfield battle, but used smart skills around the outside to make the most of their chances.

In a game that looked likely to come down to the wire with just seven points separating the teams at the final break, it was the Blues that stole the show, slamming home six goals to one in the final quarter to run away winners. Captain Marc Murphy was sensational with 32 disposals and 12 inside 50s, while Blaine Boekhorst topped the clearances with seven from his 26 disposals. The "ins" were all pretty quite with Gresham (three disposals), Smedts (four) and Cloake (five) not having an impact in the game.

Carlton 6.3 | 11.3 | 14.4 | 20.6 (126)

Hawthorn 2.0 | 8.6 | 12.9 | 13.12 (90)

Goals: Franklin 9, McKay 4, Savage, Roberton, Murphy, Roughead, Boekhorst, Scharenberg, Marchbank.

HEARTBREAK FOR BLUES

CARLTON has suffered a heartbreaking one-point defeat at the hands of rivals Richmond in what was a disappointing loss for the premiership hopefuls. Leading by 16 points at quarter time, Richmond booted 11 of the next 15 goals to take a 19-point lead themselves into the final break. Carlton hit back with a four goals to one final term, but fell agonisingly short of victory. Once again a large discrepancy in the clearances was evident and brought the Blues back to a 2-2 win-loss ratio.

Josh Kennedy had 30 disposals for his sides, as well as three clearances and five inside 50s, while Lance Franklin was as dominant as ever with five goals, but spent time in the ruck with 11 hitouts. Brodie Grundy had 31 hitouts to go with his 22 disposals and five inside 50s, while Blaine Boekhorst and Matt Scharenberg continued their good form this season. In his debut, Cam Polson had 10 disposals and five contested marks but failed to kick a goal, much like Patrick Kerr who had eight touches and four clearances. Carlton also suffered a couple of injuries to add to their pain with key rebounding defender Sam Docherty likely to miss three weeks after injuring his achilles in the final training session, while Kade Simpson suffered a heavy concussion and will miss next week's match in Perth against West Coast.

Carlton 5.1 | 5.5 | 9.10 | 13.12 (90)

EAGLE RULE THE ROOST OUT WEST

WEST Coast has handed Carlton its third loss in four games with a narrow seven-point victory over the Blues at Domain Stadium. Blues' star youngster Amad Barns stood up in defeat, winning the Rising Star nomination for his 30 disposals, five tackles, six inside 50s and four rebounds. It was the first time the West Australian had returned to his home state since being drafted by the Blues, and it was fellow West Australians Lance Franklin (four goals) and Sam Petrevski-Seton (three) who lit up the scoreboard.

Unfortunately for the Blues, it meant little in teh scheme of things. After a seven-goal first term, West Coast proved too good, leading by as much as 14 points heading into the final break and despite a high-scoring last term, the Blues could not quite bridge the gap, going down 21.6 (132) to the Eagles' 20.5 (125). The loss was another close one and a bitter pill to swallow for the Blues as they look to regroup.

Carlton 7.3 | 10.3 | 15.3 | 20.5 (125)

West Coast 5.2 | 12.4 | 17.5 | 21.6 (132)

Goals: Franklin 4, Roughead 4, Petrevski-Seton 3, McKay 3, Cripps 2, Scharenberg, Savage, Nicholls, Murphy.
