In the paper on sunday there was announced yet another Ned Kelly film.

They talked about the Mick Jagger disaster (especially as he was one of thatcher's biggest financial backers in the eightties - Wheere did my $150 MCG concert money go, Mummy.

But Who should play Ned Kelly ?

I was thinking that mr Mel Gibson should do it. Here's the reason.

Braveheart (you Know, Mad Max 5 - in Tartan)
is probably one of the most significant films in history because it boosted the scottish national Parties polloing by some 25%. It was enough to get some independence in a referendum.

Now the republicans here could benefit if the Ned Kelly film had some anti-imperial message. It could do the same for us.

Pess
I think Joffa would make a good Ned Kelly.

Chris Haywood looked pretty disconcerting while bearded in The Nun And The Bandit.

I know the preference would be for an up-and-coming new talent, so perhaps David Wenham on that score, geeze you could use the cast of The Boys for most of the gang ... well, Polson, did reasonably, anyway.

John Waters perhaps, scratch Arthur Dignam on history. The best aussie character actor for nasty blokes these days is probably Dave Field, but he'd probably be TOO nasty.

Wild card : John Doyle (Roy Slaven), who has played many bad guys (and one dicky commentator in Babe). Doyley's efforts have been pretty low-level, but Egglestone doesn't ask much out of his charges, so it mightn't be the actor's fault.

A VERY wild card : Syd Brisbane. And another possibility : Jom Holt.

Best known roles :

Chris Haywood - Newsfront and Strikebound.
David Wenham - The Boys, Cosi, Dark City
John Polson - Sirens, The Boys, The Sum Of Us
John Waters - All The Rivers Run, Grievous Bodily Harm & Play School!
Arthur Dignam - We Of The Never Never (this was in jest, WotNN was his only good movie)
Dave Field - Ghosts Of The Civil Dead, Two Hands, Blackrock and Broken Highway(every one a MUST SEE, except perhaps Blackrock).
John Doyle - Rampaging Roy Slaven of Roy & HG (this was also in jest, as his horrors have been pretty dismal).
Colin Egglestone - Director of Sky Pirates (the thinking man's 'Indiana Jones') and Long Weekend (the thinking man's 'The Birds')
Syd Brisbane - Struck By Lightning (another gutsy one).
Jim Holt - Anzacs (played 'Dingo') & the only good acting role in Crocodile Dundee 2

All superb actors (excepting Dignam and Doyle who I listed in jest because they both get parts in very bad horrors like The Dreaiming and Outback Vampires respectively) who should be considered before bringing out yanks like Gibson. With Mel, we'd just get another Payback, or another Ransom, or another {shudder} Lethal Weapon.

Had John Hargeaves (Beyond Reasonable Doubt, Long Weekend, Boundaries Of The Heart, Don's Party, My First Wife, Malcolm, Odd Angry Shot & Sky Pirates) still been with us, then I would suggest sneaky **** Johnny above all others. Clear and away the best acting talent the world has ever seen.

I'm sure some bunch of idiots like Ken Russell will end up with the movie, and give us scenes that will make us wish for the long jump competition scene in Ned Kelly : Outlaw (1970) in our dreams.

Good actor and Aussie movie, not often mentioned together. True.

Hard to understand how people can be so easily induced to treason, or perhaps they're simply blind.

Darky, assuming you will insist in watching those trumpeted seppo flicks over and above anything decent, I suggest you attempt to forget about Gladiator, and give The Insider a burl. His is a far better performance in that one.

But for a decent Crowe movie, try 'Proof'.

I'm still trying to forget about Gladiator.
A soppy pooncy love story masquerading as a second-rate not-at-all-violent battle flick. It was shithouse. If not for the blonde sitting on my lap, I would have left a lot earlier

I actually quite like the 1973 production starring Mick Jagger

Its a good movie, very realistic, true to history, has no pretension, just plays a straight bat to avery interesting story and Jagger is very good in the lead role.

Give it a go - you'll be pleasantly surprised.

As for who should play a new Ned Kelly - hmmmm dunno.

Mel Gibson would be a disaster - he is too American these days and would find some way of completely buggering it up, Russell Crowe is very much flavour of the moment but he can't act and just wouldn't look right.

Ned Kelly was only of average height and was of stocky build with a big beard (in the fashion of the 1880's)

Dunno really - imagine Steve Bisley or even Steve Bastoni with big beards and maybe you are getting close to what any screen Kelly would look like....

cheers

For me, that was it. The rest was very so-so.

That opening scene was awesome. It really made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and my stomach churn, Just from the sheer enormity of brutality.

The rest of the movie was so-so...except for

The portrayals of ancient Rome and the colleseum, loved the visual accuracy

and a chance to see a stadium full of Port supporters 50,000 baying for blood.

Circus Maximu reportedly held abour 250,000 - now thats about the biggest I have ever heard of !

But will anyone coment on a Gibson Movie which could lift the republican cause ?

It wouldn't need to be accurate - Braveheart certainly wasn't

Yeah you got me there

Except he is more australian than Mel Gibson.Who is actually born New York and moved to Oz when he was 12.

Anyway Russel Crowe isnt the first Kiwi we have claimed to be our own.

Mel's too old. Ned was under 30 when he was hanged by the neck until he was dead.

So Mel at forty-whatever he is, is too old. Too American as well.

I have to admit having a bit of trouble thinking of anyone youngish who could do a good job - Heath Ledger maybe?

Ok ... after thinking about it, Dave Field would be my decision.

Presuming you folks still dunno who he is, the only movie he's been in that was popular was Two Hands. Can't rememebr the character name, but he was the bloke driving the car that hit the kid, the bloke who got out, moved the body to the side of the road, and drove off again.

Two Hands wasn't his best vehicle, though. If yers get a chance, have a look at 'Ghosts ... Of The Civil Dead' (also casted Nick Cave). Field's character is has some Kellyesque features about it, being victimised early and the victimiser late.

Give it a bash. The blokes in the movie sure did.
