Have heard the whisper that the SFL may be thinking of changing Division 1 ot least (maybe 2 as well) to a final 5? Is this true or as I said just pub talk and a load of rubbish. The reasoning behind it is so the SFL can make more money on finals with more games and teams being involved. Has anyone else heard about this?
If this was the case in Division 1 it would make it alot more interesting because the last couple of seasons the top 4 has been decided with about 3-4 rounds left. Might make it a tighter finish. Thoughts?

Definately a Final 5 P-Dog not only is it the fairest finals system, but another team makes the finals which has to be good.Top 3 have been the same in Div.1. for the past 3 years and last year for example would have seen Tooronga Malvern make it which is good for the comp.I think they should overhaul the whole system and have a Final 5 as well as 2 relegated and 2 promoted. Some teams such as Ashwood a few years back languished in the bottom 2 or 3 for 4-5 years and are now really struggling to rebuild. If they had of been relegated after 2-3 years i think they would of had more chance to rebuild and would be much stronger now.The facts are blokes want to play finals even if they scrape into 5th, it is still a great experience to play in September

First I've heard of it.... It sounds like it would be great for the comp having a final 5. Would make it a very interesting finals series!!

For those who haven't been involved in a final 5 before how exactly do the finals rounds work out.

i.e week 1: ~ vs ~
~ vs ~
week off etc.

Spot on lads. Looks like just Div 1 Seniors and Ressies as well as Colts.

It would work this way

Wk 1...
EF - 4 v 5
QF - 2 v 3
1 - bye

Wk 2...
1SF - Winner EF v Loser QF
2SF - 1st v Winner QF

Wk 3...
PF - Winner 1SF v Loser 2SF

Wk 4...
GF - Winner 2SF v Winner PF

Don't tell me the SFL is actually going to get something right....... WOW!!

Sounds like it could be a good year for the competition - top 5 is a very fair system which gives another team a taste of September action. I thought that Tooronga were more than worthy of playing finals last year.

With the competition this year the finals could be an interesting contest outside the certainties: St Kilda, St Pauls, Cheltenham with the battle for the other 2 spots being of great interest. Keeps the season alive for the other clubs to get a bit of finals action.

So is this 100% ridgy didge true that this will be in effect for this season??

Dont like the idea, in a 10 team comp it rewards teams for having an ordinary season. I know clayton knocked off chelt a couple of years ago but in this comp 4th and 5th are usualy 10 to 15 goals of the top 2 or 3 teams.

Graet idea and with the Colts having more teams in 2009 looks like the SFL are getting their shite in shape. Who is running the show down there now? Isnt it a bloke from the afl?

But 4th/5th are usually quite close. It also rewards top spot with a clear advantage over 2nd which the 4 doesn't do.... AFL has half its teams in the finals.
I think the final 5 system is the best for rewarding top spot as well as the next tiers on the ladder. And agree, why not have an extra couple of finals to a) get more players playing in them; b) provide more opportunities for exposure/revenue for the SFL. Personally, I can't see a down side.

Heard a whisper about this at training tonight, i think its a good idea and hope it's implemented. I've been at Caulfield for 9 years off the top of my head i cant remember a final round that teams have needed to win to make the finals.

As most people know the last 4 - 6 weeks of a footy season can be pretty miserable for those in teams in position 5-8 in they know they cant make the finals. An extra spot up for grabs should mean more blokes on the track for longer and better attendances and turnover for most clubs....i'd vote for it!

Oh..i checked the SFL website for info on this as well as the new team in divvy 3 an no surprises, nothing there.

It's a bloody great idea. And really it shouldn't have taken this long for them to bring it in.
The only problem with it is that (by the sounds of it) they're not bringing it into all the divisions. Div 3 i can understand, but even there the finals need to be revisited. How the winner of 3 & 4 has an advantage over the loser of 1 & 2 just defies all logic.
Anyhow, at least this is a step in the right direction. :thumbsu:

Overall I think it is a good thing. The positives of it are:
* More money generated to the league and clubs with extra games
* An extra team has the chance to play finals
* No longer disadvantages the loser of the 2nd Semi, as the 1st Semi is played on the same weekend.
* Huge advantage for the best team throughout the season- finishing on top has a week rest and then have the double chance

Negatives:
* 5/10 make the finals- are we rewarding mediocrity? A side could make the finals after losing more games than winning...

A very thorough assessment Mr Pizza. You need to get out more on a weekend!

Same as AFL, 50% of comp in finals..

So I'd say it's a winner all round..
Good job by the league
