Finally, a flag for a club that hasn't ever bottomed out?

The same Father-Son Rule that was applicable to all other clubs????? This fallacy has been done to death on BF, but our FS Selections are only champions in hindsight! None of them, except for Hawkins, were ever going to be high draft picks. And based on last night, not sure how much of an advantage Hawkins has been to us! The fact that that Ablett and Scarlett became so good for us was attributable to development and luck, not through Geelong taking advantage of an unfair rule that favoured them specifically!
Adelaide and Port have had the most restrictive father son rules in the comp.

While Geelong were able to have their pick of any son of 50 gamers, Adelaide could only draft sons of 200+ gamers in the SANFL.

Geelong finished 11th in 1999 (highest pick #8) 5th in 2000 (highest pick #44) and 12th in 2001 (highest pick#8)
Who smashed the draft again? Bottoming out is finishing bottom four, more likely bottom two .Geelong have never really bottomed out at all, 12th is their lowest finish for the century.
Also had an amazing run with f/s

Pity it provoked a knee jerk reaction - f/s is that little randomiser that to me makes it more exciting - and if one club does a bit vetter than the rest for a small period then so be it.

So what is the definition of bottoming out?

Adel were 4th last only 6 years ago. Bottom 4 is bottoming out, surely?
perfect timing too when GWS had 11 of the first 15 picks... although we did get Brad Crouch out of it.

Except only a person who was deliberately misinterpreting what COLA was about would say that.
I have no anti or pro Crows or Swans agenda. This is a figment of your imagination to justify an incorrect view of history, that you personally utilise to color your own club in a better light..

In regards to COLA and Sydneys inclusion as a non bottoming out club:

16 people have currently supported my view
0 people have currently supported my view

I will side with the people on this matter. They know the difference between piss and rain.

You benefited hugely that you could pick up these players so late in the draft and keep your early picks for other players, it's a double up effect. Don't get shitty, I'm not accusing Geelong of cheating but the rules were changed because of the massive advantage that you got.
Enjoy your day, mine is f***ing fantastic.
;)
Simon Fletcher Geelong Garry Fletcher N/A 0 N/A (Administrator)
1997 Marc Woolnough Geelong Michael Woolnough 29 6 117
1997 Matthew Scarlett Geelong John Scarlett 45 284 183
1998 David Clarke Geelong David Clarke 21 89 207
2001 Gary Ablett, Jr. Geelong Gary Ablett, Sr. 40 192 242
2002 Tim Callan Geelong Terry Callan 36 34 62
2003 Mark Blake Geelong Rod Blake 38 99 176
2004 Nathan Ablett Geelong Gary Ablett, Sr. 48 32 242
2006 Tom Hawkins

So there's the list of father son players for Geelong.

Note: Marc Woolnough, David Clarke and Tim Callan were nothing special by AFL standards and thus were all delisted.

Mark Blake was a part player and waseventually going to get delisted. Thus why he chose to retire because he was aware that he hjad got what he wanted out of playing AFL.

Nathan Ablett was quite hit and miss in terms of when he was interested but was useful when he played. Left at 07 and never really contributed much apart from that one season. May have been awesome if he had the desire to keep on.

Of the rest of them, the only three which were excellent players were Scarlett Ablett Jr and Hawkins. The rule got amended cause of Hawkins who has been good but never overwhelmingly good as he was marked as a first round draftee and most probably a top 10 one too. Never helped that the other first round player they could take also turned into an elite player.

Both Jr and Scarlett were never marked down for top 10 or first round players. Scarlett was seen as a second or third round defender who could turn into a decent backman and Jr was seen as a possibly handy small forward. At the time no one ever put Jr in the category of Luke Ball, Chris Judd, Luke Hodge etc and felt that he was selected at a fair spot based on his standing. Just like Dane Swan and Sam Mitchell eventually Ablett developed and became a star.

So really the father son rule had a minial effect on Geelong's results late last decade and it only resulted in them getting three good players (two who would have been picked around the same mark anyway even if the fs rule wasn't there).

I'd call finishing bottom 4 (because I like selective stats) as bottoming out. Crows did that in 2011
the 2011 season was when there were problems within the club. it was when walker was caught drinking at a reserves game and can remember that craig leaving him out due to 'poor defensive pressure'. the group was talented and it showed when made the prelim the following year.

Doesnt every team get a first round draft pick every year?
Even so, Adelaide have done extremely well to be where they are, with so few top picks, and player exits, and draft "misses", not just in the recent drafts (2011-2016 Drafts), but in the draft period of players that should be in their prime now (ages 25-29, 2006-2010 Drafts), who should consist of the core of your list. They only have six players on their list that they originally drafted from that latter period:

- David Mackay (Pick #48, 2006 National Draft)
- Andy Otten (Pick #27, 2007 National Draft)
- Taylor Walker (Pick #75, 2007 National Draft)
- Rory Sloane (Pick #44, 2008 National Draft)
- Daniel Talia (Pick #13, 2009 National Draft)
- Brodie Smith (Pick #14, 2010 National Draft)

By comparison, a club like Richmond have 10 players still on their list that they selected in the 2006-2010 draft periods (11 if you count bringing in Bachar Houli in the Pre-Season Draft). The Crows have done very well with finding players later in the draft, and trading around with some foresight to fill their needs (Betts, Jenkins, Lynch, Brown, etc.).

Alas, the policy of never bottoming out, without outside influences, has still not delivered a flag.

I commend the crows on their persistence.:thumbsu:

When did the Swans bottom out? Also you can't say 1993 as that was so long ago it is not remotely relevant to the modern Swans list.
Doesn't count because we were able to retain players with COLA. Had we been doing under the table deals to retain our players like Adelaide then it would be okay though.
