Finals + Granny?

It’s not actually even 3 weeks. It’d be Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun then Fri/Sat then Fri/Sat. It’s 8 games in 17 days… then a week to recover for a grand final.

Very tough on one ground given an A+ surface is expected for all.

Makes me wonder how they ever got through gf day in the days when it was u/19s followed by reserves followed by seniors all on the same day at the G.

The surface looked pretty terrible in some of those GFs. But it was standard so a non-issue.
Now it’s an issue when the umpires practice bouncing the ball while the centre circle paint is still wet (which actually happened in 2019).

Thinks the solution is a “ring of steel” with rapid testing.

I realise he’s been told to raise all this on behalf of his “big business” “heavy hitters”… but seriously, use your *in brain Eddie.

You can move the gates to your ring out to Hawthorn, you’re still gonna have 100,000 people wherever the gate is, lining up to get in, standing around together while waiting for tests.

From what I could gather, part of the point is to have a very wide 'fan zone' is not to reduce the risk of transmission but to generate some revenue with with food trucks etc., rather than as a way of reducing the risk of transmission when fans are queuing up. That said, this looks more complicated than it needs to be. I would have thought the simpler option is just to require attendees to have a negative test from earlier in the week (Tues-Thurs). It's hard to see how requiring 100,000 people to each wait for 10-15 mins for a rapid test result is going to work.

Exactly. Very short sighted and reeks of big business doing everything it can to make a $$$.

Ring of steel? Yes with 100,000 needing to travel through Melbourne transport system to get there.

What happens post game Eddie?

100,000 people head home, to pubs, restaurants and Crown Casino.

Sure what could possible go wrong.

All for a single game?

PLUS spend an additional $2.5 million dollars to boot in security and testing that is questionable.

He spoke about it on Footy Classified last night and was talking about 200 testing stations being set up within the 'ring of steel', I guess that would work out to 500 tests per station, also mentioned perhaps people required to get a PCR test on the Wednesday before being allowed into the ring of steel and have tickets tied to tests.

I guess that would stamp scalpers out.

Or have McGowan shut the joint down and ban a crowd the morning of the game when someone positive jumps off a ship in Fremantle Harbour or at Port Hedland or some poor WA resident with a home and a job, that he won't let back in (which is happening multiple times per day) gets desperate and gets back into the state without a g2g pass and tests positive.

Assuming the Swans earn a home final but it can't be played in NSW, where will it happen?

My guess is either the MCG or the Docklands. It looks like week 1 will already two finals in Melbourne (Vic clubs will finish first and second), and one final in either Adelaide or Brisbane (the Power or the Lions to finish in 5th). There's nothing preventing a third final at the MCG that weekend (except for a COVID outbreak!).

Well that depends on the terms of any agreement doesn't It.

I'm sure the AFL will be asking for clear guidelines to what would need to go wrong for a late cancellation of crowds.

Imagine the howling from the east if all finals and grand final were in Perth this year! Not likely.

And this changes with 60,000 in Perth or 50,000 in Adelaide how?
