Finals Week 1

Why? As the article I linked stated, MCG staff need three hours between event to clean and prepare for the next crowd. It would be unprecedented but it's clearly feasible that Geelong v Fremantle (hypothetically) could be the early Saturday afternoon game - which would suit Freo, as they'd get back to Perth earlier - and something else could be played at night.

I guess we're going to need a "Who is planning on hiding at the MCG between finals on Saturday?" thread.

Possibly but I don't think there will be much in it. Maybe 5-10 thousand. Will have to wait and see how things work out next week. Quite a few ladder shaping matches.
Interesting the afl website on their prediction of the first week of the finals have cats freo at etihad and pies port at the g. I'll say it again no way will tigers or pies be placed at etihad with the cats playing an interstate team.

All I know is Richmond can start planning for the second week of the finals.

They're in the best position if they hold 5th. They'd be praying for a Freo upset as I imagine they'd fancy the Cats at the MCG in Week 2.

Going to be a good finals series for Richmond I'm wagering. Very strong prelim final chances.

It might be worth the exercise as a test for the contingency that the afl lose a victorian venue for one reason or another

Thoretically yu could have games thu fro mon nit and to games each on sat sun, all at the one venue

If North were to beat Collingwood, unlikely but possible, the AFL would be in a bind.

Collingwood play on the Sunday, but a potential Fremantle v Collingwood semi would have to be played on the Friday night due to the Subiaco being unavailable on the Saturday. If that occurred that semi may need to be a Sunday day game.

That that will have to happen. The afl will not give Collingwood a 5 day break. Then the prelim final will be played on Saturday

Does this absurdist revisionism actually make you less fearful of the prospect of playing us in the finals?

It was obvious the poster was talking about Fremantle being unbeaten at Eithad under Lyon, continually trying to draw comparisons to his Stk model to downplay his coaching nous is a futile exercise, this current Freo team is a different beast.

Assume all you like. The fact remains that Ross Lyon's football doesn't hold up in finals. It didn't hold up in 3 Grand Finals, yet he's rated so highly..

He got gifted a list from Grant Thomas that had made a Prelim the previous year (from memory).

Then he gets up and walks out when he FAILS to win a flag and the Saints look like tapering off. Under dodgy circumstances I might add.

Shit bloke. No flag. All hype.

I don't get how St Kilda's game plan didn't hold up in grand finals.

They didn't get flogged in any of the three grand finals and played good opposition. The difference between winning and losing is sometimes a very fine line. I don't think Ross Lyon failed in his time as St Kilda coach.

If there was a negative about his tenure at the Saints, it would be list management, but most clubs these days take that responsibility away from the head coach. Chris Bond is the chief of that position at Fremantle.

There's no better coach in the AFL at producing results. If the Dockers don't perform in September it won't be because of Ross Lyon.

A good coach will prepare the players as best as possible for a match and a season and organise them accordingly on match day. The players still need to execute.

St Kilda were simply outplayed in two of those grand finals.

We are a fair chance to play Carlton or North?

Carlton have beat us 8 of the last 9 times and beat us two weeks ago with 3 of there beat 10 players out?
And our record against North over the last few years is pretty much 50/50. Also take into account we only have one player with finals experience.

he did get flogged in 1 of the 3 grand finals.

Had to laugh at Eddie when Gerard suggested that the 6th placed Pies play their final at Etihad.
Eddie looked stunned for a second then goes "but it's not our home ground!"

It's not Geelong's home ground either Eddie but you are trying to push Geelong there and you don't seem to mind, so why can't the Pies play there?

I have to agree:(. As much as I love Eddie, the finals system MUST always reward the higher team on the ladder. So if there are to be 4 finals in Melbourne one has to be at Etihead. So Hawks, Cats and whoever finishes 5th should host to play at MCG. BUT.....will the afl let say PIES vs BLUES (if it happens) be at Etihead while Cats vs Freo be at MCG. No they probably wont, so why shouldn't Geelong play at Geelong against potentially Freo????? Oh that's right, the AFL wont get as Much money..........

5th plays loser of 1st & 4th not 2nd & 3rd.
