I've had a few days to think about it, and I've reassessed my views... If we can get there, I want finals! IDC if we go out first up.... finals footy is awesome, 10X more if the Dees are involved. Remember the feeling of playing in finals? It's a unique feeling, I want that! If we play finals it doesn't mean we cant play awesome footy next year.

I'm with Andy_Mac. Essendon made the finals last year because there was no competition for the 8th spot, except with a pitiful Hawthorn, and their game style was as Andy said much too hit and miss. It's plain to see however that we're a developing side, unlike Essendon who were great one week and then all over the show the next. We've been consistent for most of the year and challenged all the good sides bar Geelong and Hawthorn, the latter which we can redeem soon.

Bombers were good enough to make it last year, they just got hammered by suspensions and injury and couldn’t put their best team out on the park. Full strength (at least Hille, Ryder and Lloyd) it may very well have been a lot closer. There form this year was as I said. Russian roulette footy.

After the weekend as suggested I think every other team in the finals would be more scared of us than Sydney or North etc

Of course we should want to make finals. how much finals experience do our players have? (seriously does anyone know?) We need that experience even if it is a smashing from a team like freo in freo.(not that i think that would happen) What happened with essendon this year is completely different considering the talent difference between our teams. Fans who don't want us to make finals should head on over to gws board. We don't need you. I miss finals. I remember going to every final in 2000 and having my heart break in the gf. But i want it again with a passion

Is that right pal. My first game was in 85. Ive seen robbie flower play I've been to every final since 94. I went to the 2000 granny. Been a member since 94 and the last 2 years I've been a presidents member. Been to every vic game this year including geelong So don't be a smart arse and sit behind a laptop and try and knock my creds. Your probably one of those anti priority pick fools who would have rather sung the song against Richmond than have scully and thought bailey was a shit coach cause of his win loss record. Y don't u play othe song in ya car on ya way to work if your
that obsessed about it. At the last 2 agms I've been to I've been to I've listened to bailey very carefully and it's as clear as day the mfc has a plan and I don't think finals in 2010 are a part of them.

Rather not make finals. Finish 9th and smash norf in the last round would be a good result. Just think we're not ready. Essendung made it last year and got flogged. Now they're going backwards

I agree with Andy Mac's comments, just becuase Essendon got smashed doesn't mean we will suffer the same fate. As mentioned they didn't have a first choice ruckmen, the Lloyd saga and other injuries. It is very short sighted to pinpoint Essendon's troubles to that final.

I don't think we will make it, but would love to see us make finals. The one good thing if we do make it, will off the back of some good form.

All im saying is I don't think getting smashed in a final has helped development no matter who was or is in their playing personnel. I don't believe they were ready for finals and if loyd were there now they'd be just as bad. Got to crawl before you can sprint
09 picks
10 8 wins. Games experience
11 12-14 wins. Finals experience, maybe win one
12 top 4, granny?
13 and beyond, who knows

I'd like to see the Dees in the finals. I disagree with those who think a finals loss would bring us down, I think it'd make the group even hungrier for next year. Would rather finish 8th than 9th - how did the latter option work out for Richmond all those years?

They never had the talent like we do

Thats why we should try to make finals. Dean Bailey might not have planned for finals but i bet he would take them in a heartbeat. And Opeth, i don't need to list my "credentials" to know that i love the Demons and all i want is to have a successful club. Oh and i watched Scully play for haileybury so i was always hoping we would get him priority pick or not

Not asking u to. Don't appreciate being told to go forth and multiply by some fool on a keyboard who doesn't know me, hence giving u insight for my passion for the club. It's my opinion so live with it. Just letting u know that I'm no bandwagon flog who doesn't wana be a part of the success we will have. I'd take finals too of course but believe it's too early

A bit of a (related?) tangent and not one that I've seen much discussion about, but Bailey seemed completely devastated in the post match presser after the Fremantle game. Much more so than I'd ever seen / expect from him. There have been a lot of what ifs and if onlys about games earlier in the season and you can treat this the same way if you like .. but a win against Fremantle would have positioned us very, very nicely for an achievable run to a finals berth.

It's highly unlikely we'll make finals. If we win this weekend then we are a step closer, but there are still many more to make.

Why do we all assume we will get pumped in the first final if we make it?
It will be one of Bulldogs, Freo and Hawthorn, and we came very very close to both the Bulldogs and Freo.
Hawthorn we will have to wait and see what happens in round 20, but nevertheless...?

Oh ad for the record shogun I wasn't listing my "credentials" as u like to put it I was validating my "credibility" as a Melbourne supporter/member since I was alive.

OPETH chill out man - everyone on here is a true Melbourne supporter - you dont need to jusify yourself. (well except maybe BS and LittleStinga)..

Anyway I understand your point - a demoralising defeat in a high profile match could have a negative impact on a young side. No problem with that.

My personal view though, is that either way a premature finals appearance would be tremendous experience for the young guys and give them a benchmark to strive for next year. If they get hammered so be it - they will be over it in time, and will draw from it when they are smashing other sides in finals for many years.. :thumbsu:

Hey demon16, yeah I did become a little raged about being questioned about my faith, but shoguns comment really struck a nerve.

Perhaps Andy Mac misunderstood my point or maybe I wasn't clear enough in my opinion.
Watt I was trying to put across was the Adelaide defeat on essendung may have contributed in a small way to them going backwards this year. I wasn't saying this was the ONLY reason for their shit play, was just an example for me saying I wouldn't care if we failed to make the 8. In saying this we should be 7-8th if results went our way. They didn't so that's that.
For the first time in a long long long time the MFC have a solid plan and Bailey in my opinion seems to be a very structured coach/person in general, and put his coaching career on the line for our club and worked his way through last year with all the shit given to him and kept his nerve very well.
Just don't wana see the up and down yo yo daniher years

I would like to see us play finals if it came about. Not overly confident it will because we seem to have a habit at the moment of failing to beat the teams we should beat (eg. West Coast). Having said that if we won the games and made the finals I think that would be good reward for effort.

I understand Opeths concerns regarding Baileys plans for the future but my understanding of Bailey is he is trying to fast-track our players development as quickly as possible and playing finals is a great opportunity to do this. Our young guys can see the rise in pressure and spend the pre-season working to reach that level.

What ever the result, if we win another 3-4 games we will have surpassed most peoples expectations for the year.

Don't think we'll make it and won't be overly devastated either. If Rioli gets a couple of weeks the Hawthorn game could be interesting though.

Every time i run the ladder predictor i get us in the 8, however as we have seen by 2/3 of the results so far this round, games dont always go to plan... if Carlton keep sliding and somehow get rolled by Essendon or Richmond (or both) it'll go a long way to helping us.

your only 1.5 games out of it and every team that is in the finals race has to play each other at some stage. Bad luck against Collingwood and Bullies are whats keeping you out of it.

I think it would not hurt Melbourne in the slightest to go for it....the experiance in a final win or lose would be the same as all 22 games put together

Very well said RG4E :thumbsu:

We're definitely still in the race. My hope is very much alive!
