Gday All.

I don't know about you guys but Im sick of hearing the old AFL spending millions on our club stories.

Now according to the 2013 report we aren't getting over and above anyone else.
Am I reading this right or is there other dollars.
Now Im not including money spent on the junior areas in Sydney (they arent included in any other state) nor the 20 mill in start up costs (of which 10 went to Spotless upgrade)

Interesting, I thought the whole point of the future fund was to help out struggling clubs yet Essendon got $3.3 mil.

It didn't exist until 2007 and peaked in 2010 and 2011 when the AFL was establishing the franchises and putting 10-13 million into the stadiums. Look at page 148 where it says "reduction in direct expansion funding for the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney teams down $3 million". This directly correlates with the decline in "new markets" expenditure from $14.5m to $11.5m.

If any money is given to the club wouldnt it be included in the list?
Any funds delivered outside that would be in grassroots in the region. Not the club.

GWS and GC are new markets. Obviously, I don't have the figures but its a pretty fair guess based on the crowds of the two new clubs that GWS would require more assistance.

That's not a very accurate basis tbh. Ask the saints about making money out of Etihad with MUCH bigger crowds.
It's what the stadiums breakeven point is in relation to the average crowd.
I've not seen Spotless's BE point, nor have I seen Metricon's therefore I wouldn't guess.

There's an increasing number of Auskick coaches to be paid given the growth of the sport. I know they don't get paid much, more a token, but there's a lot more of them needed now than there was in 2007. More clubs mean more development officers to cover the regions. And we need more marketing because we're a minor sport at the grass roots.

All the infrastructure is already there in the "traditional states"

This whole region is a new market (and a very competitive one) and if you want to grow thegame here you support the grass roots as much as you support the Giants. We get what other clubs get. Our region gets more because they need it.

I'm not arguing that the GWS and GC shouldn't be both getting significant additional funding and I think they need it. I don't accept it as plausible that they are receiving the same funding as the strong established clubs and even less than those getting "disequal" funding.

You are all members of the club I presume, so you should be receiving financial information in your club's annual reports which goes to this. If your not receiving such info I would think it would be worth asking for.

The facts are written above. Wether you accept it all is up to you.
Yes the grassroots would be getting a significant investmant increase. But its still less than the traditional states grassroots

My understanding (somewhat disappointingly) is that the GC and GWS are still considered wholly owned subsidiaries by the AFL so do not provide annual reports to members, unlike other AFL clubs. Speaking as someone who gets the annual reports from the Lions but not from GWS.

I think that's right. I can't recall ever receiving a giants annual report.

Very early days for the club but still not a good look
The AFL's expansion into Sydney's rugby league and soccer heartland has hit a financial bump, with the league forced to tip in an extra $3.25 million into the Greater Western Sydney Giants last year.
Documents obtained from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission show the Giants slid to an operating loss of $529,315 in 2014 despite the AFL pouring in $20.16 million in grants for the year.

And hard not to think that given these type of numbers that we won't look harder at going down the direction of poker machines as reported last year

The SMH dug up the club's financials from an ASIC statement.

Key points:
  • Marketing and sponsorship brought in $7.8m (dropped from 2013 due to a back-ended sponsorship deal with Skoda).
  • Membership and merchandise brought in $1.14m.
  • Ticketing and other revenue brought in $3.3m (not in article, calculated myself).
By comparison the Suns brought in $6.6m for sponsorship, merchandise brought in $843k and membership & ticketing (probably including the non-Suns events at Metricon) collected $7.6m.

It is still a worry and shows just how far off we are as a club before we can sustain ourselves

Absolutely. We really need more memberships and more attendance to start pushing up the revenue streams.

As another comparison, the results for the Lions:
  • Merchandise - $1.2m
  • Membership and ticket sales - $5.6m
  • Corporate and marketing sales - $11.2m
To compare apples to apples, Giants = $4.4m for membership, ticketing and merchandise, Lions $6.8m, Suns $8.4m.
