Opinion Financial impact on structure of Port, the AFL and long lasting Covid issues

Nothing has seemed to make the press yet but Bickley nd Rowe started the AA sports show yesterday with the news that Port have made several redundancies to staff working in general admin in events, corporate area and gutted the China team. No game there next year and probably not the year after, which isn't a surprise.

"Haven't announced them publicly, but people have been told." Monday was the day AFL assistant coaches were told what is happening to them for next year. Nothing announced re Port assistant coaches so I assume they all have kept their jobs ie Schofield, Voss, Monty, Basset, Cornes, Goldsack and Lokan.

They rabbit on about China for about 2 minutes, but Port talk starts at the 1.00 mark and finishes about 4.15.

Any news at your end Lockhart Road??

There is an established rule re media which applies in this case: Take zero notice of anything that comes from Rowe.

The new east coast league could be a 22-24 team league depending on finances.

10 Vic AFL teams
4 NSW and Qld AFL teams
2 Qld teams from NEAFL
2 Sydney teams from NEAFL
2 Canberra teams
2-4 VFL teams

If that's the case, then the SA teams will probably miss out.

But if things are tight financially and no AFL subsidy, maybe only Southport on the GC would be financially strong enough to put a team in so that's a 15 team comp.

VFL teams might be able to afford 2 to 4 interstate trips, so could still be a 20 team comp.

Plan hatched in Melbourne so I imagine the amount of thought given to leaving room for SA and WA reserves would have been ... minimal. Maybe as far as "WA is too far away... so we can't let SA in because that would be unfair to WA. Gee that's convenient isn't it, boys?". But that's about all.

THE NAB League could be reduced to an eight-game season next year in another radical change to the elite under-age competition. The slashed draw would force Victoria’s brightest teenage prospects to play more school, and even local, football next year.

The consideration is of serious concern to AFL recruiters and list managers who believe future draftees will not get the same level of medical, physical and off-field care afforded to them in the elite NAB League.

The players will also be scattered right across the state and be difficult to benchmark given the differing standard of opposition, prompting fears some will slip through the net.

The plan has further angered AFL club officials, already furious over the lack of consultation and communication from the league’s head of talent pathways and state league competitions, Tristan Salter.

The merging of the VFL and NEAFL into a new-look eastern seaboard competition caught many clubs completely unaware. With list sizes expected to be cut, AFL clubs are bemused at the prospect of putting tiny squads on planes with top-up players for interstate games should they have growing injury lists.

The recent decision to switch the NAB League from under-16s and under-18s to under-17s and under-19s, despite the draft age remaining at 18, also shocked many who had not seen it coming.

It’s understood one high-ranking club official - charged with speaking on behalf of the clubs – recently contacted senior AFL staff to complain about Salter’s methods. While the footy world is transfixed over where the Grand Final will be held, the frantic discussions and anger over what the second-tier competitions look like next year and beyond, is the game’s big watching brief.

“... we can't let SA in because that would be unfair to WA. Gee that's convenient isn't it, boys?".
Hahaha! I have never thought about that. It makes sense, in a twisted VFL perspective.

WA & SA should form a league that includes the reserves teams from the four AFL clubs.

4 x AFL clubs reserves
8 x SANFL clubs
9 x WAFL clubs

21 teams, perhaps bring down to 18 with some mergers/alignments

Two conferences, one WA one SA.
Sync any AFL reserves games to AFL league games between the WA and SA teams.

It's the only way that the SANFL will remain relevant plus it strengthens the two strongest football communities outside of Victoria.

The long term development of local SA & WA talent benefit all clubs involved and would help revive interest in the local leagues. Would also offer a platform for growing AFLW at a state level.

Get Gupta and Forrest to provide funding for the first few years until it becomes self sufficient.
Top 4 from the western and eastern leagues play a shadow finals series alongside the AFL finals series. Gives a Williamstown, Norwood or South Freo the chance for a genuine second tier national championship.

Kennett was on Dwayne's show as he has started talking why he might put himself up for another 3 year term as Prez and discussed AFL finances, club finances and the Vic and Oz economy in general and what might happen over the next couple of years.

Said the AFL probably will use less than $100m of the $600m line of credit but he said its not guaranteed.

Said 5 or 6 clubs will go thru 2020 without extra assistance from AFL.

Said if the virus continues and effects 2021 season, then WCE are the only club financially strong enough not to ask AFL for assistance in 2021.

Was quiet bleak about the potential long lasting economy wide effect of the virus to Vic and Oz economy. Was asked about depression issues given his Beyond Blue stuff and said people come up and talk to him and tell him how they are struggling. Told story of a couple of people who have lost the businesses they have built up for 30 and 40 years and a couple examples of people with their general troubles.

He reckons not enough people have fully grasped the long term economic impact of the 2nd shutdown. Had a crack at Andrews asking for 12 months extension for state of emergency. Said it wont last that long but the announcement has scared off businesses looking at investment decisions. Thinks the construction industry will be hit hard by it as people wont invest in new buildings. Had one or two other digs at government's actions even though he said he didn't want to be political, and had one or two where he had non hesitation to attack Andrews.

Reckons he has thought long and hard about going another 3 years and thinks his experience can help the club, but did say its up to the members to vote him back in. Pity Port members don't have such an option with our chairman and board.

Pretty much said Clarko isn't going anywhere before end of 2022.

Didn't mention it, but I think building their Dingley facility is on the backburner.

I'd suggest that maybe it is the Big Melbourne Clubs that have been the most adversely effected by the way the season has played out. Most Clubs are reporting that membership has held up, but many of these big clubs rely heavily on massive Pokies Monies, side operations such as and big Matchday attendances. Are the Tasmanian Gov still stumping up the cash for Hawthorn/North? No games means they really shouldn't be.

No idea about tassie sponsorship but Hawks are hit hard by pokies shutdown as are Carlton.

Collingwood, Melbourne and Western Bulldogs have gotten out between 2017-19 to join North who never had them. Geelong are getting out but over a longer time frame.

Essendon and Richmond do ok out of pokies but not as as good as Hawks and Carlton and St Kilda pokies revenue is less than $5mil before gaming taxes and expenses.

I remember reading a while ago that Tassie not opening the boarders would mean no money for North. As the least financially secure and least supported Victorian club they have picked a terrible time to be down the bottoms of the ladder. If Gill had any backbone rather than cutting list sizes he would cull a club or two.

The AFL needs less teams in Victoria and there is never going to be a better chance.

RussellEbertHandball get a load of this.

'“[The SMA] also noted that under the contractual arrangements in place for the Adelaide Oval, deficits it incurs are required to be covered by SACA and the SANFL, but given the financial impact of the pandemic their capacity to fund [their] operations may be reduced,” the report notes.'

The Hotel which is an eyesore will now hinder Port and Crows to get a better Oval deal in the future If gather if the Hotel doesn't turn a good profit...

Watch this space on this (longer term after the first year or two):

“This report raises serious questions about the commercial viability of the hotel"

The SMA ******* up and not paying its debts on time over a sustained period might also be a valid reason for the state government to renegotiate the licenses and lease with the SACA and SANFL, and SMA respectively.

Might be the one way to legally take power away from them or even scrap their management rights of AO.

Its not all bad.

I'll give it a year or two until it's sold to a chain....

The SANFL couldn't help pay for anything......

In some ways its a great time to be bottom of the ladder. AFL has promised to support all clubs through covid19. Crowds are largely irrelevant. It kinda sucks more to be us, missing out on the spoils of a likely big H&A average crowd and likely 2 home finals.

Could never understand the viability of this venture - a complete waste of time & money. It will give the ALP something to latch onto come next election time!

So have the SANFL been allowed crowds all season? And effectively been the only live sport to watch, AND finally free of the burden of the AFL teams?

Yet can’t turn a profit.

w***ers.

Bet it’s sold to a chain within 5-7 years.
That would be the bookies favourite scenario IMO.

Hilton Hotel chain are building a couple a year at stadiums in UK, so they would probably be interested.
