It is reported in today’s papers that we will post an operating loss of between $400 - 500 thousand dollars.

Clinton Casey is quoted as saying that the factors that caused the huge loss include:
  • A shortfall in membership of 3000 which translates to a $300,000 decrease in revenue.
  • Unfavourable match programming during the Ansett Cup and early regular season.
  • Poor match returns from Colonial Stadium which lost us several thousand dollars.
  • Cost of maintaining the injury list
  • A $1.5 million investment in a new coaching structure

My opinion is that at no stage should this be deemed acceptable. I feel as members, we should be given and explanation as to why this has occurred, why adequate steps weren't taken to prevent it from happening and most importantly, what will be done to prevent it from occurring again?

Some more specific questions should be asked of the administration:
  • It would have been no secret that membership sales were not proceeding with the same rate as in previous years. What was being done to reverse this? Surely we have the names and addresses of those who chose not to renew? Were these people contacted - preferably by phone - to ask why they have not renewed? Why wasn't there an aggressive campaign on home match days to target Richmond supporters who were paying cash through the General Admission gates? Ask them: Why aren't you a member?
  • Assigning blame to the poor programming in the initial rounds is a bit of a furphy. Essendon had equally bad a programming run in the first few rounds, but this did not appear to harm their bottom line. I know that Essendon did have an exceptional year, but in relative terms, so did we.
  • If us being forced to play games at Colonial against our will has resulted in losses of "several hundred thousand dollars" are we going to sue the AFL for retribution? If no, is this because this is another furphy or are we too scared to?
  • What is the nature of this $1.5 million investment in the coaching structure? Does it involve the purchase of infrastructure? Or is it just an increase in expenditure in the way of coaching salaries?
  • Has an analysis been done on the nature of the injuries to determine if more could be prevented? I do understand that the majority of injuries were more of an impact nature which are hard to prevent, but this still does not preclude the need for a review.

This coming season is now crucial for the long term viability of the Richmond Football Club. We have had a series of profitable years which will give us the necessary buffer to survive this jolt but this level of loss cannot be sustainable for the long term. Steps must be taken to ensure that this coming season will put us back on the correct track.

What would Graeme Richmond do?

CJH,

You are spot on as usual.
This financial performance is unacceptable. A few more years like that and I shudder to think of what will happen.
I would also like to know who is responsible and what is being done to reverse the situation.

Gosh thats quite alarming, and for Richmond members I do think they are entitled to know how the club could of made such a large loss.

But Richmond did improve in 2000 and surely their membership would increase? The coaching structre seems to be fitting in nicely and no major trade losses over the draft period.

hello fellow tigers i agree with cjh but we have to remember this a new board do u think the old board would have been different with the outcome etc? i dont think so. we have to remember after all those years of counting our penny,s our football dept was so bare it reflected to on the field.im sure casey with having settled in by now im sure and confident that our off field results will improve and im equally sure any ex members out there would have seen what frawly has finally done what others have failed in.we all must admit the footy dept is in great shape now and like i said im confident our membership will improve.
cheers all

I noticed this on the Official Web Site:

If you wish to obtain a copy of the Richmond Football Club financial accounts for 2000, please e-mail Lisa Beavan on lbeavan@richmondfc.com.au with your name, 2000 membership number, e-mail address or home address.

Of course I have taken them up on this offer - It may make interesting reading! I will use this information as a basis for a letter asking for answers to my above questions.

By the way, I received a call last Saturday from the Club about whether or not I had sent in my renewal form. (Which of course I had, at least a month ago!) Has any one else got the call?

The following media release has been posted on the AFL's Richmond page:

The Richmond Football Club today announced a consolidated net loss for the year ended October 31, 2000 of $639,667.

President Clinton Casey said while this was a disappointing result, it was important to recognise that the Club remains debt free and is looking to 2001 to rebuild its cash reserves.

Mr Casey pointed to three main factors which contributed to the Tigers’ financial deficit in 2000.

“Firstly, membership and annual reserve seat sales were below budget, reflecting the difficulties in the early season start, weekday fixturing for the first three games of the season and Colonial fixturing.

“Secondly, match receipts failed to meet budget. The four home games at Colonial Stadium, after compensation from the AFL, have initially returned a modest profit, well under what we’d budgeted for.

“Thirdly, football costs continue to rise and were unfavorable to budget and reflect increased player costs due to injuries and increased coaching costs.”

Richmond’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2001 at the Crown Casino.

We were told a few weeks back that it would be in the order of $400 - 500,000 dollars.

I think this was to condition us to expect the worse. That we say 'Oh, it was only a little more than we were expecting' and not having it hit us all at once.

They are offering the financial accounts to season 2000 members for perusal. I've put the details in a separate thread here, and are also available of the official website. Please take the time to read them.

I received an email back from Lisa Beavan this morning. Apparently the above notice was placed on the website in error and has subsequently been withdrawn.

Lisa states that all members will receive 'Concise Accounts' as well as notification of the AGM in the mail by the end of next week.

If, after perusing the concise accounts, you still wish to have the Full Accounts then these will be sent to you.
