Not to defend him, but that's been the job description of shock-jocks since radio first began; and that's essentially what Mark Fine is: a shock-jock. Some would say KB plays a similar role in the 9-12 morning slot, although having played 400+ games at the highest level, his opinions have somewhat more credence (not that I tend to agree with them). It's unfortunate that SEN feels the need to put those of the Laws/Price/Jones/Hinch/Sandilands ilk on the air, but that's modern radio I guess.
It not his opinions per se that I object to it's the way he expresses them and in particular the way he deals with people who don't agree with him. I've never heard KB be as rude and bullying to people who call that disagree with him as Finey is.

Agreed, KB doesn't tend to shout people down, so probably not the best comparison.

As for Finey, "the way he deals with people who don't agree with him" is classic shock-jock behaviour, and that was the essence of my point. Whether it's intentional behaviour on his part, in an effort to drive ratings, or just happens to be a natural bullying demeanour, I don't know.

Fair enough and I totally agree with you, shock jock stuff. Whether it's Finey or SEN driving it it's not good IMO. Other stations manage to have footy talkback with out insulting the callers and insulting the intelligence of the listeners in the process. SEN could do it a lot better if they wanted to.

There have been loads of Saints supporters telling anyone who will listen how ordinary he is and Fine is simply one of them. Plenty of back-slapping on their board too about their amazing list management in jettisoning McEvoy. At least they are up and about I suppose.

We'll see how it plays out I guess. He wasn't that shit hot on Monday but if he backs up well against the Tigers then it will be handy. Maric (who likely won't play) has given their mids an armchair ride the past two matches against us.

Similar could be said of many Hawks supporters, who come October 2013, suddenly found deficiencies in Franklin's game.

The funny part is apparently he was criticizing Malthouse the other day about bullying tactics. :)

Now I have never listened to this dude so I do not really have an opinion on him. But I do wonder why those of you in Melbourne listen to him. You know he is a dick. You know he is going to talk shit about the Hawks. Yet you all tune in every time. Is it some sort of hidden masochistic trait that makes you listen in, get yourselves all riled up and then come in here to complain? Or perhaps some sadistic thing that makes you want to hear him rip into someone else?

Some stuff just isn't worth tuning in to.

I'm not usually one for shock-jock type dj's, but I must confess to not minding Finey as much as everyone on here seems to. He does spout some rubbish and can be rude but I actually don't mind some of his observations. I thought he was spot on with his analysis of the Hawks/ Cats game and where they're at ad clubs compared to the rest of the comp. I didn't find what he said to be too outrageous or offensive. Just said the rivalry is what it is and come finals time anything can happen - doesn't mean Geelong totally have our measure, they just won on the weekend

He made an excellent point that ours is the only real rivalry in the comp at the moment - the Pies/ Blues/ Bombers/ whatevers are no longer relevant as they reflect the old suburban footy days not what we have currently.

Anyways, he's not everyone's cuppa tea but nobody's forcing anyone to listen to him or call him up - you knows what he's like, just hit Ignore if you feel that strongly.

I don't tune in but he comes on straight after the footy broadcast ends so sometimes I hear a bit of him before I get a chance to switch off.

Finey's a bitter and twisted person. Most Saints supporters don't even think much of his show.
Re the McEvoy trade I still think it's a win-win for both clubs. Hawks wanted a number one ruckman for this year, they got it. Saints wanted players for the future, they got it (Dunstan is already looking good, and hopefully Acres won't be far behind).
I don't buy all the crap about McEvoy being no good, he'll never be the best ruckman in the comp but he will give you a contest and take some good contested grabs.

The only knock on McEvoy from one of my Saint supporting mates is that he just doesn't dominate the ruck taps often enough... Yesterday was a pretty good example. Clearly the best ruckman on the ground but only 22 hitouts v's Hampson 30.

I give him a 6.5 - 7.0 / 10 for his ruck work and an 8.5 for his stuff around the ground.

When we traded for him it was pretty much known that he wasn't the greatest tap ruckman going round. I believe it was said that his marking in the defensive half is where his value lay.

Mark Fine is actually very knowledgable about football history, and reasonably insightful in some of his analysis on football.

Where he gets it wrong is how he deals with people; either toadyingly sycophantic to those he deems worthy, or snide in the extreme to those he doesn't. I'm reminded of Sybil criticising Basil in Fawlty Towers... he's "either crawling all over them, licking their boots, or spitting poison at them like some benzedrine puff adder..."

A couple of years with big monkey and will see how he goes. Hale has improved his ruck work ten fold since moving to us. And I expect him to do the same after a few preseasons.
