PICK 11: FINLAY MACRAE

Clubs:
Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 186cm/78kg

Bio: The Macrae name is certainly familiar to footy fans, given Finlay’s older brother is Western Bulldogs star Jack. He’s a well-balanced midfielder who accumulates the ball and disposes of it exceptionally well, making him someone where you want to have the ball in their hands. While he doesn’t have breakaway speed, his decision making makes up for that when he’s around opponents. Macrae has a great endurance base and is very competitive.

A prospect who finds the football at will, Macrae spent the main part of last season with the Oakleigh Chargers playing as a half-forward, including having 20 disposals in their Grand Final win in the NAB League. But the younger brother of Western Bulldogs star Jack would have spent all of this season playing in the midfield, where he has shown he can rack up possessions and use them well on both feet. He has a nice sidestep and a hunger for the ball in his hands, and ran 6:17 in the 2km time trial at the Vic Metro NAB AFL Draft Combine.

From Cal Twomey.

Looks like a great pick up, will learn a lot from his brother and Pendles
It was funny during the fox footy telecast, they seemed to say Fin can kick on both feet unlike his bro.

Cant remember who said it, but may have been Shifter.

Jacks kicking with his right has improved a ton since being drafted, and is 1 of the better kicks in our team IMO.
Having said that Finlay's kicking with both feet is on another level. Very Sam Mitchell'esque with how comfortable he is kicking on both sides combined with his elite vision and evasiveness.

I can't believe Finlay slipped to pick 19 tbh. I watched every Oakleigh game last year (as I was obsessively following Jamarra) and Finlay was clearly a better player than Will Phillips IMHO. It's just that Phillips got a lot more midfield time than Finlay so he was able to show off his talent more. This year with Rowell and Anderson gone, Finlay would have finally been able to show off his abilities as a full time midfielder at Oakleigh and I have no doubt his stock would have skyrocketed up to a top 5-10 pick.

I think in 5 years time you guys will be thankful that he wasn't able to play any games this year and show off his talent as a midfielder.

Also don't be surprised if he adds a couple more cm to his height. Jack was drafted at a similar height (187cm), then had a massive late growth spurt and shot up to 191cm a year or 2 after being drafted.
