Lyon lets Fiora loose
By staff writers
October 31, 2008
ST Kilda have lost patience with outside midfielder Aaron Fiora and dumped the left footer after 62 games for the Saints.

Fiora was selected with the third pick at the 1999 draft by Richmond.

He played 78 games with the Tigers before being traded to St Kilda in a three-way deal that included Saints midfielder Heath Black and Fremantle big man Troy Simmonds.

The running wingman was often the whipping boy for Saints and Tigers supporters alike, but seemed to have shored up his position in Ross Lyon's side with 22 games in 2007.

However, an injury-interrupted 2008, in which he managed just 10 games for a total of 62 with the Saints, has cost him his place on the list.

Meanwhile, Xavier Clarke and James Gwilt have signed new deals with St Kilda that will see the pair remain at Moorabbin for at least one more season.

Twenty-five-year-old Clarke played just eight games this year while Gwilt managed 13.

Both were touted as trade bait at season's end but have extended their stay with the club.

St Kilda's general manager of football and list management Matthew Drain said the pair are "valued members of the squad".

Well can't say I'm disappointed to hear that news about Fiora, I just wonder why he wasn't delisted a couple of weeks ago with the rest of the players.

Is it because the club has now decided to recruit Cousins and needs to make an extra space available on the list?

best news ive heard all day... theyre finally listening to the fans and doing what the club needs to do =D

had a very weak year and couldnt see him improving on it....

sh*te - we've actually grown some kahunas as a club lately....

I know, about damned time we grew a pair.

Good news though, maybe now we can increase the status of our 2nd tier insetad of filling it with polyfiller players.

... hopefully this is the sound of the penny dropping that we WILL NOT win a premiership by thinking we have to use "polyfiller" (:thumbsu:) players like fiora again. we could have picked up a kid and kept him for five-ten years but no.......

As I said on the Richmond board, I'm trying to figure out whether I give Fiora credit for playing 140 games or whether it's a sad indictment on both our clubs that he played 140 games.

its good we need to get rid of these sort of fringe players
and it makes space for better players lyk gram goddard and even
COUSINS! to b apart of the midfield:thumbsu:

but bad luck to aaron fiora on his part he did to some things
that were great to watch

I'm with Brian lol. Think she's off some Euro Big Brother or some sh!t. Better than Gretel... Just.

Re Fiora. Nice bloke. Feel for him. But he was never willing to put his body on the line. Looking forward to SSS's response! Make it a good one buddy!

Fiora's name certainly gets thrown out there, and I was under the impression that he was contracted for 2009? Is that the case?

Don't mind paying out the contract, in this case

Thank you.
Big Brother indeed:rolleyes:

F***. Boned. Have seen this chick on an email stating 'Euro Big Brother' vs Aus Big Brother. Not on crack... I don't think. Might explain the lack of sleep tho lol.

Can see the resemblance now too.:o

Great news on the re-signing of X Clarke in particular, and of Gwilt who flourished when not solely playing in defence.

Aaron was never my favourite player, but he played for the club I love so - for that he has my admiration and I must admit there were several times when he outperformed my expectations (especially in 2007) and for that he also has my respect.

Farewell Aaron Fiora - we wish you well in your next venture.

I suggest you hire a copy of " From Dusk Till Dawn"

As for Fiora , I suggest that the Scorpions should try to get him ( along with Birss and Rix ) , they will need all the help they can get playing Melbourne's seconds.
( Now that they wont have Geary, Armitage, Steven , Allen etc )

pretty sure i got ridiculed when i said delist him.. because he had or has a contract for 09 doesnt mean a lot these days!!

If Fiora was a number 30 draft pick, instead of a number three national draft pick, he would of been delisted by Richmond after 20-30 matches.

Good decision. I wonder how much his contract was worth for 2009? Does Fiora's 2009 salary get included in the Saints salary cap next year?

No it doesn't brother.

The payout will affect the bottom line, but I assume the contract can't have been anything too silly.

Probably correct - can you say the same about Mini?

So it will go into this years salary cap?

Could have been cutting it fine and I was musing with the wife that (up until today's announcement) that this may have been why he hadn't been delisted already
