Sorry to go on a Silent Alarmesque rant here but with all the bushfires around my way they have been constantly telling us on the radio and TV how brave and heroic the firefighters are. Now, I'm sure this is true in a lot of cases and kudos to those guys. However it is my experience that a lot of fire fighters are in the fire brigade because they love fire. I had a friend when I was growing up who loved fire. In fact he was pretty much obsessed with them. He would light fires at every opportunity and whenever we were at a bonfire he would always be the one stoking and prodding the fire. As soon as he was old enough he joined the fire brigade. I've also heard stories of people who have joined the fire brigade and actually started fires so that they can put them out. These people are doing what they love doing. To me a hero is somebody who goes out of their comfort zone in order to perform a heroic act. The firefighters up here are doing a great job but are they, or at least a certain percentage of them, really deserving of hero status?

Was mentioned before but professional firefighters are exactly that.
Its the volunteers that are full of pyros.
The selection process to be a firey is arduous and there are a shitload of other dangerous as **** parts of the job not involving fire- chemical spills, gas leaks, high rise rescue.

If its pie nights, piss ups and burning shit that youre after its the volunteers all the way.

Interesting and topical thread topic
I hope you are safe . I have little to contribute to this thread in a specific sense because I have only met one firefighter a (now ex) boyfriend of my close friend . His name was Carson (and he actually thrived on the irony of how his name rhymed with Arson ). He was a pyromaniac , but also loved the honour /prestige which came with his job (he wasn’t a volunteer - he was paid) . He hardly talked about anything other than himself /his job though , which was one reason why that relationship ended .

My take of a hero also relies on there being a volunteer or altruistic aspect to it ie someone going out of their comfort zone , unpaid and out of their way , to put something (whether or not it’s their life ) at risk .

Wow

The total weight of a firefighter's PPE depends on the tools needed for the job, but basic PPE (helmet, hood, pants, coat, gloves, boots and air pack) weighs about 45 pounds. Add a thermal imaging camera, radio, box light and set of irons (Halligan bar and axe) and you're up to about 75 pounds.Jan 1, 2013

Absolutely. You can't tarnish an entire occupation because of an extremely small percentage of bad eggs.

They’ve managed to do this to bankers/financial planners.
