Sorry to go on a Silent Alarmesque rant here but with all the bushfires around my way they have been constantly telling us on the radio and TV how brave and heroic the firefighters are. Now, I'm sure this is true in a lot of cases and kudos to those guys. However it is my experience that a lot of fire fighters are in the fire brigade because they love fire. I had a friend when I was growing up who loved fire. In fact he was pretty much obsessed with them. He would light fires at every opportunity and whenever we were at a bonfire he would always be the one stoking and prodding the fire. As soon as he was old enough he joined the fire brigade. I've also heard stories of people who have joined the fire brigade and actually started fires so that they can put them out. These people are doing what they love doing. To me a hero is somebody who goes out of their comfort zone in order to perform a heroic act. The firefighters up here are doing a great job but are they, or at least a certain percentage of them, really deserving of hero status?

Although I've heard they like to wear ladies underwear under their uniforms when fighting fires.Absolutely. You can't tarnish an entire occupation because of an extremely small percentage of bad eggs.
To spend a day in a class room with snotty nosed kids is not heroic, it's damn right mental imo.

Good podcast that one. As soon as I started listening I figured it would be the well-regarded fire guy.If you like podcasts check out Casefile episode 98 for a senior American firefighter and his exploits in California
