First current premiership 'drought' to be broken...

I'm not convinced about this Dogs team, they remind me too much of the team from 08-11 they just lack something they will go close (prelim maybe GF) but I don't think they will win a flag with this core.

For me It's Melbourne there structure looks spot on from my perspective but they are still 2-3 years away and who knows what can happen in that time.

Dogs have a real chance in the next few years.

Dees and Saints could challenge in a few years time if they develop their lists right.

Tiges need to get back to the drawing board, need to work on getting a quality team around Dusty Martin while he's still at the top of his game

Dogs easily. I would think they'll get one in the next 5 years.

Melbourne clear second but some of their youngsters lack the class of the Dogs. Should be a finalist within the next 2 years and could move up from there.

St Kilda and Richmond are in transition periods, although I think St Kilda is in a better position purely because they've been purging spuds and picking up good youth for a few years now. Richmond has been in the finals for 3 years and is currently carrying a lot of list clogger types, ie. chaplin, hunt, conca, hampson, grimes, maric, mcintosh, and morris. I'd expect a list overhaul after this season to give them a shot while Dusty, Rance, Cotchin and Reiwoldt are still around.

Obviously the Dogs are the closest but I'm not sure any of them are going to break their droughts in the foreseeable future. Dogs remind me a lot of Freo the last couple of years and we know where that went while Melbourne/St Kilda to my eye don't have the top end young talent to be guaranteed anything yet. Richmond are obviously massively off it and probably need a full rebuild.

Just think we put too much value on youth nowdays and ignore the fact that to win a premiership these young sides have to contend with Sydney, Adelaide, GWS, Geelong, WC, Hawthorn who all, to varying degrees, look like they can challenge well into the future.

Doggies for me.

We all saw how much a premiership lifted Geelong in 2007 after so many ears and bad times in the community.

Can you imagine how Melbourne's western suburbs would be if the Doggies got one?
Mark Antony cut a swathe through the town prior to 2007. Not sure he meant it literally

Its pretty sobering seeing how long the drought has been, who really knows if we can sustain the momentum and snag one in the next few years.

I'd just like to see one in my lifetime.

I'd actually just be happy to see them actually make a gf. Of course once you're there you want to win it, but just make one for ****s sake.

Longest premiership droughts of VFL/AFL clubs:

Western Bulldogs: 62 years (last in 1954)

Melbourne: 52 years (last in 1964)

St Kilda: 50 years (last in 1966)

Richmond: 36 years (last in 1980)

Basically, which of these teams has the best chance of winning the premiership in the next few years?

I think Bulldogs would have to be clear first. They're playing exciting, attacking footy, and seem to have more consistency. Their window is now, they have to really seize the opportunity in the next few years. But now is also one of the closest, most competitive, tightest periods we've seen in awhile. This year there are at least 6 legit flag contenders, IMO: Hawthorn, Sydney, Geelong, Adelaide, West Coast, GWS, aside from them, and who knows what the scene will be like in the next few years.

I think there are good signs for the other three. I think Richmond have definitely been playing below capacity, though. Whatever the reason, it's somewhat debatable. The Dees and Saints look like they're on the up, though I don't really see any winning a premiership before the Dogs IF the Dogs take the chance.

I really hope the Bulldogs finally win a second, it'd be great for the club, and I have a soft spot for them, partly because I live in Footscray now and they're one of the smaller, humbler clubs (I guess they would be lol) with a very local supporter base. Also St. Kilda. Not that I have any great affinity with the club, but their run of bad luck has been awful. A measly 1 point ensured they did not go an unbelievably 119 years without a premiership. I'd like to see Melbourne and Richmond win because it would be good for the clubs and the comp. Which team would you most like to see their break their drought?

This is what Footscray looked like in 1954:

When are Carlton considered part of the drought club?

I remember it was always the Bulldogs, St. Kilda, Melbourne and Geelong grouped together. Once Geelong won in 2007, Richmond seamlessly took their spot.

Does it need to be 30+ years between drinks before we consider it a significant drought, or is there a team limit?

I think Fremantle should probably be added to the list as this year makes 21 years (obviously not winning this year) but we're getting up on those other clubs in terms of drought.

That's why the AFL is a joke of a business .. GWS have been handed a premiership on a platter as Freo is the only one who hasn't won one in there first decade of existence whilst there isn't a single Melbourne Stkilda or Bulldogs fan under the age of 60 who would remember a premiership

Just as a reference, not a dig at you as such. But here is a list of how many years it took each team to win their first premiership: (Note Fremantle aren't the only one to not win one in their first decade)

(VFL/AFL premiership)

Adelaide - 6 Years
Brisbane Lions - 4 Years (From merger)
Carlton - 9 Years
Collingwood - 5 Years
Essendon - 1 Year (Initial VFL winner in 1897)
Fremantle - 21 Years* (Haven't won one yet)
Geelong - 27 Years
Gold Coast - 5 Years* (Haven't won one yet)
Greater Western Sydney - 4 Years* (Haven't won one yet)
Hawthorn - 36 Years
Melbourne - 3 Years
North Melbourne - 50 Years
Port Adelaide - 8 Years
Richmond - 12 Years
St.Kilda - 69 Years (Longest of current teams with a premiership)
South Melbourne - 12 Years
Sydney Swans - 23 Years
West Coast - 5 Years
Western Bulldogs/Footscray - 29 Years

Brisbane Bears - 9 Years
Fitzroy - 5 Tears
Melbourne University - 6 Years

Doggies most likely and up there with St Kilda as the two sides I'd most like to see win a flag in the near future.

It's been a while for Melbourne and Richmond but at least they have been successful in the past (even in the distant past). Footscray and Saints only have one flag each in all that time and it would be incredible for their fans to taste the ultimate victory again.

I've been burnt as a Collingwood supporter with words like dynasty and primed. There's just no guessing what'll happen or if your president creates a transition plan.

I plead to you Doggies supporters, you might be young and playing exciting footy, that doesn't translate to flags in the future.

In all seriousness, there's really no guessing what'll happen.

In 2012, Hawthorn weren't primed for a dynasty, but they had a very good list with premiership players from a few years earlier, it was all about Freo and Sydney at this stage, Sydney won that year and didn't win another one, Freo contended and dropped off.

Lions prior and during their 3peat just weren't a H&A team that went through winning non-stop, they turned it on in finals. A team like Port would've probably won more minor premierships during that period.

Right now, IMO, Sydney has the strongest list, and a large amount of their best players aren't actually that old, so they can win a couple.

Adelaide and WCE just need to get over their fears of the MCG and they can snag a couple.

Who knows man, you guys might all not wake up before Buckley sorts his s**t out and awakens the beast of Victoria Park. That'd be a sight to behold. Buckley on the dais and BF gone into meltdown.
All valid points, but I think out of all supporter groups you don't need to point out to Dogs supporters that a good young team doesn't necessarily translate to future flags - or even a grand final.

I hate threads like these because they just highlight how disappointing it can be as a supporter of these teams, whilst other clubs seemingly just swoop in and take their second/third/fourth flag in the past 10/20 years (I know it isn't that easy)

Just who is this PerthBoy character you speak of?
Serial thread poster. On a forum site of all things. He should be ashamed of himself
