A trouble-plagued Victoria Police is refusing to warn battered women that their violent partners are getting out of jail, claiming the force does not have the resources to alert them ahead of time.

The force has told State Coroner John Cain it rejected his recommendation that victims be told of their perpetrators’ release at least 48 hours beforehand because they “changed their numbers” and “screened their calls”.

In a letter to the Coroner’s Court, Victoria Police blamed its dismissal of the potentially lifesaving alerts on long-running “resourcing and capacity” issues.
