Infrastructure Victoria chief executive, Dr Jonathan Spear, said “slower speeds make streets safer” and the recommendation was aimed at more people walking or riding in local neighbourhoods, such as to schools and playgrounds, without impacting travel times.

“A pedestrian hit by a car at 50km/h has an 85 per cent chance of dying. At 30km/h this falls to 10 per cent,” he said.

“ a pedestrian hit at 50kph has an 85% chance of dying……..”. So does this mean a push to lower the limit statewide. A couple of other ideas to consider- 1. Maybe market the idea that pedestrians don’t walk-in the way of cars at any speed let alone 50kph. 2. Registration plates and fees for bicycles and scooters so that they can also be accountable for speeding. 3. Change bail laws as I’m reasonably sure that the current spate of juvenile car thieves and unlicensed drivers are unlikely to adhere to new laws given they get a free pass for breaking the current ones.
